What do you think about dubai as a city state in the new BNW expansion? It would be a merchantile CS and it makes sense if it was a city state.

Dubai's importance is recent. Bahrain would be a better choice as it describes an ancient region as well as the modern city.

But yes, it would be cool to have a CS from this area.

I was also thinking bahrain but dubai just feels better because it fits in with BNW's modernity focus. Bahrain could be added at some point in the future.

Given that City States are always capitals, Dubai isn't going to happen because Abu Dhabi would take that spot.

City-states aren't always capitals. There is Milan, Venice, Florence, and Genoa from Italy and none of them are capitals. Neither Zurich nor Geneva are the capital of Switzerland (Bern is). Rio De Janiero is not the current capital of Brazil. Marrakech is not the capital of Morocco. etc, etc, etc.

I agree, and dubai is actually larger than abu dhabi in population, now back to topic, dubai could be other than a merchantile, it might be a cultural city state

I also wouldn't mind if Burj Khalifa were to be a wonder, even if it would have little effect for being so late in the game.

Actually it would be a good idea, and it's yields would be enormous because it is late game.

idk what the exact yields could be but it should have :c5happy::c5culture::c5gold: a little bit of :c5food: and 3 great engineer :c5greatperson:

Dubai is as good a choice as any. At least it's closer to being an actual city state than a lot of the ones in the game, which has tended to skew heavily in favor of defining a city state as "capital of a minor country we haven't put in (yet)".

Correct me if I am wrong but it isn't Astana the capital city of Kazakhstan? Cause Almaty is in and is a kazakh town and Astana not.

Astana is a very new purpose-built capital, as the old capital was prone to landslides and not in a particularly central location. Hence, Almaty makes a better CS due to its history.

As for Dubai, it certainly deserves its place. After all, the UAE is essentially a federation of city-states.

There are TONS of city states that would be great choices. Dubai is a great choice sure, but there are countless others that are great choices too and some areas of the world that are quite neglected when it comes to city states

Well it's a major economic international city now and I don't see the UAE being represented in a Civ game anytime soon so I say sure.

The big question of course being whether Dubai should be in the Arab city list. All city states so far have been clearly out of a region of an existing civ. Dubai would clearly belong to the Arabs, even if it might be a bit down the city list. That it is so far down, could point to a 'why not'? But then I'd bet they first would do Khartoum or Djibouti for that region due to the fact that those will not be in the Arab city list...

"Skyscrapers" (steel-framed buildings) explicit absence in Civ 5 feels wrong somehow. I think they're shown in the Industrial Age intro graphic, but I've often felt that this modern technology/practice should be more present in the game.
