Maybe asking this right now is a bit odd, since BNW is not even out yet. But I'm going to ask anyway: what do you think about the future of Civ5 after the expansion?

In my opinion, as much as I'd love to have a third expansion (maybe based on the future or something), I don't think it's going to happen. But you know, since we're only 7 civs away to reach 50, maybe there will be extra DLC's...

Asking way too early. Hoping for a 3rd expansion, but they've said nothing is in the making for now, but they won't rule anything out.

Civ 6 in 2015. No time for new expansions, but definitely some time for dlc's.

I'm thinking in terms of DLCs; I don't think that they would change anything else to do with the gameplay, so I believe an expansion is unlikely. It'd be great to see them do that Ancient Wonders scenario update that was hinted by a couple of screenshots, perhaps this time doing the Hittites and Sumerians as fully-fledged civs. We all have our favourites for what would be included in DLCs ;). For me it's the above, an "enemies of Rome" DLC with Teuta of the Illyrians and Vercingetorix of the Gauls (I know we already have the Celts) and a Colonization scenario incorporating a couple of new Native American civs.

The official statement (freely quoted) is, that they "feel, that BNW will be the final expansion, but they'll listen to the fans, whether or not there is any desire for more content."

I don't think it is possible to make up one's mind regarding the need of further enhancements, before we have even played BNW. I don't think it is really possible, to evaluate the flow of the game just by looking on the paper.

On the other hand, I hope, there will be further content! Even if it seems to be the (unfortunate, in my eyes) conclusion, that smaller DLC (= new civs) is not, what the fans want - I definitely can imagine some additional civs. (e.g. Inuits, if they are not the mysterious "hypercube civ).
Regarding game mechanisms I still miss:
- Health.
- Maybe corporations (in a new interpretation).
- Random events (in a new overhault and better included as well).

(I DON'T miss vassals and revolutions, by the way. The first will make the game way too easy, the later is already included by BNW's city-flipping.)

I think DLC's will be added. Occasional double packs like Spain and Inca I would assume, but it would be nice if they added a dlc just for a combat mechanic/patch although this would probably belong in an update rather than a DLC.

Still, keep the hopes up.

They said that they will treat it like it's the final expansion, but they have more ideas if they want to make another.

also,

They have said that the DLC thing was not popular with fans, so they went back to the expansion model. Therefore, I think it would take a major outpouring of support for DLC from fans in order to get them to make more DLC.

The outcry was because peopel believed that DLC would replace expansion model. People actually are not opposed to DLC atm from what I hear.

If anything, I lean towards another expansion rather than DLC. I see a lot more commercial appeal in an expansion that would allow multiple leaders per civ rather than DLC that exists of some rather obscure civs.

Well G&K did so well that now we have BNW, I imagine that if BNW does particulary well they will consider it.

I think there's still plenty of areas for improvements for a third expansion, not to mention Civs.

TheKingOfBigOz's stance is my understanding as well. I think people thought that it would be only DLC civs/scenarios when they felt other additions were necessary - which has now been catered for by the two expansion packs. I actually enjoyed getting the DLCs and trying out a new civ every 2-3 months!

I think there is room for one more expansion, 7 civs to get it up to 50, with corporations being a major focus along with ethnically diverse graphics and changes to the space race with an expanded future era and fleshed out space travel. In my dreams, assuming Venice and Sioux are the last two BNW, we get:

Kongo led by Nzinga Mbemba
Pueblo led by Pope
Colombia led by Simon Bolivar
Hittites with Mursili
Sumeria with Gilgamesh
Khazars with Sabriel
Mughals with Akbar

And one new scenario, Alpha Centauri. You can either can continue your main game once you get to Alpha Scenario or start a new game on Alpha Scenario.

I think after this, they're going to move focus to Civ6, keeping to the trend of a base game and two expansions.

I'm sorry, but the people who thought dlcs would replace expansion packs were worried over nothing. If anything, new features would all be patched in.

I don't think we'll see health back, but I do really miss some sort of mechanism that focuses on bonus resources. Coorporations might cut it, I think one could make some really interesting things with coorporations with all the themed luxuries and bonus resources we have in the game - making them more customizable a bit like they did with religion would be cool.

In fact I think the whole resource system could use an overhaul, I would also like Marble not to be a luxury resource, but instead a bonus resource, and have other bonus resources tied up with building or Wonders as well (Stone, Copper and some sort of (Hard)wood could all fall in this category, maybe even Silver and Gold) instead of having this just tied with Marble - access to Marble in your capital is a bit too much of a wild card for wonder spam as it is. I would like the field of Luxury resources to be evened out, so that there aren't some of them that are far superior to others (I'm looking at you, Salt).

I would also like Science victory to get an overhaul. There must be something more intriguing one could do with that. Science Victory is the only passive victory condition left (apart from Time victory). Now that we have Great Artists, Great Musicians and Great Writers tied up with cultural victory, one could tie Great Scientists, Great Engineers and Great Economis ... eh, Merchants up with science victory. Give them ability to research special unique theories or something, to boost your science and production or gold. Both Great Engineers (overpowered) and Great Merchants (underpowered) needs a fix anyway, so some tuning along the way wouldn't harm.

Espionage ... oh, were do I even start. Espionage needs a major, MAJOR overhaul! Tech stealing must be doable in a better way than "wait 45 turns and get perhaps magically a free tech that the civ didn't even know when your spy started, or perhaps he gets killed, or perhaps you research all the techs they have when there is 2 turns left and you just wasted 43 turns". And what about some more spy missions? Establish contact to other civ. Find location of cities, steal map, resources, city states, natural wonders. Diplomatic options, like have your diplomat influence how another civ feels about a third party (for better or worse). Get information about what techs and units they have. The whole Spy/City State interaction is a disaster, coups need to go, or at least get a major overhaul. More levels for spies, and promotions to chose from to give them better abilities in different areas. More interesting Espionage buildings. It's not like it's hard to come up with points to address in this area.

And then of course there's the whole question about the AI ...

We need another expansion. The game is still horribly imbalanced towards science, range units ruling warfare to the point where melee is useless, larger empires always be the better choice, wonder-whore cities, and a messed up tech tree.

However the DLC packs shouldn't continue. It's near impossible trying to manage them in multiplayer, most players seem to forget they even exist.

The longer I play the Civ series, the more I realize how much I appreciate myriad civs to choose from. I didn't like the idea of the DLC model at first, but having a new civs every few months was exciting for me. If DLC means I can have more civs, I'll glad fork over $5 every few months.

I also love expansions. How could I not? G&K is brilliant, and BNW looks to continue the trend (not to mention how good BtS was for 4).

More of everything please!
