Inspired by a post from Sovietman in one of the main threads and the fact that Leoreth seems in a mood of putting decolonized civs into the game, I thought I'd take my chance and present you guys my ideas for a South African civilization, or better a Boer/Afrikaner civ.
I don't think it should represent the whole of South Africa nor should it be a very succesful civ or expand to much when not played by human player.

Spawn some time between 1830 and 1850 in either Pretoria or Bloemfontein (I am not sure the Dutch have this in their settler map though).

UP: The Power of the Voortrekkers: Free tile improvements when a city is built or borders expand.

This is to simulate the importance of the Trekboers, since they were experienced farmers and went to buy land from the natives (sometimes under dubious circumstances) and started to cultivate it for later arrivals.

UB: Plaas: Replaces Castle, + 1:food:, doesn't require walls, doesn't obsolete with economics.

Plaas is the Afrikaans word for farm and during the phase of settling the country they acted in a similar way to castles, protecting families and sometimes whole villages.
I added the economics part so you can actually use it, despite the late spawn date.

UU: (Haven't found a good name yet, still looking): Replaces Grenadeer

About this one I'm not sure yet, I was thinking about something to represent the Anglo-Boer wars and the fact that the Boers were quite succesful in using guerilla techniques. Unfortunately I also don't yet know what atributes are best suited for the UU.

UHVs: 1.Kill X European units by 1902 (End of the second Anglo-Boer war)
2. Maintain 100 % Boer culture in your cities in year X (since they start relatively late with one city this might be challenging or not)
3. Acquire 10 (or maybe more) mineral resources by year X
These are all the mining resources, to represent South Africa's rich soil.

I have two other UHVs in mind in case these are not good:
Own X slaves in X (to represent the harsh treatment of the native people/Apartheid)
or just the plain "No european colonies in Southern Africa".

I think this civilization could be a very interesting one to play simply because it is different from the other newly added ones. The boers did not fight wars for gaining independence but for keeping it, making it the only european civilization to resist colonization (for some time). On the other hand they behaved a lot like the colonizing civs.

Your thoughts?

Although i love the idea of includeing more decolonization civs, i´m not sure if this should be first priority ( Gran Coloumbia, Canada, and Australia are more important to me). Your suggestions sound OK (except the second UHV, which should be replaced with another UHV)

I like it, except maybe the 2nd one should be replaced with the "no European colonies in South Africa" one.

Those 3 seem like a stretch as far as calling something a 'civilization', than again so are many of the decolonized nations. I could see a reason for Australia, just to maybe see that part of the world more settled. A late south african civ though, ehhh..I'd rather just have the Zulu.

I've thought about this yesterday too, and thought this will be interesting.

However It will be hard to make in game expression of African tribal society and conflicts.

Maybe there could be the Zulu in the 1700s and early-to-mid 1800s, and then a resurrected South Africa (same civ) in the early 1900s. The player would have to survive through the whole time.

All problems with the Iroquois also present themselves with the Zulus. Look at the size of their kingdom, it's barely a tile on the map!

I guess the Zulus could represent all SA local peoples.
Not that they are necessary in either case.

And these suggestions are coming dangerously close to including Luxembourg and Naples.

Maybe I should mention that the slot list is closed until release at least?

Leaders:
Andries Pretorius at beginning
Paul Kruger in 1880
Nelson Mandela with Universal Suffrage and Egalitarianism

1) Kill 20 native units by 1900
2) Acquire 7 diamonds by 1930
3) Acquire a nuclear weapon by 1970

what they require

1) Military
2) Expansion (Five in Sub-Saharan Africa and 2 in West Africa or get Luxury Industry and buy them)
3) Technology

UB:
UU: Laager 12:strength:, 2:movement:, Guerilla 1 & II, Drill 1 (or 1 first strike) no bonus ves

1) Kill 20 native units by 1900
I am not really sure there are that many native units spawning in that area that late, which is why i went for european units instead. Maybe it could be a combined goal of natives, english (and dutch)?

Maybe I should mention that the slot list is closed until release at least?
That means no further new civs until undefined time? Well, that's good to know. I'll keep my idea in mind till then. Maybe I'll get lucky later ;)

Yes. The focus of the current version are the Americas and I'm done with new civs as far as they're concerned.

I hope Africa will be the focus of the next version because:
1) Axum could have a better UU and UP that's more relevant to their situation now..
2) Islam needs to spread faster in West Africa
3) Moors should declare war on Mandinka instead of befriend them because mutually Islam
4) Impis and the Barbarians should be reduced, delete all the ahistorical invasion and perhaps limit them to few territories only. Ghanaian Impi and Numidian Horse Archer should never attacks Ethiopia, for example :)

You can't really control where the barbarians go.

I'm afraid how more aggressive Moors would impact the player, Mandinka are a pain in the ass UHV as is.

A Laager would more appropriately be represented by a cavalry unit, since they were wagons. Although I think this would be a pretty interesting unit (provided there are models for wagons) I believe with the UU for Argentina and Mexico there are enough cavalries.

A grenadier could be named Kommando or Boer Kommando. Or Vryheidsvegter (though I am not sure if this might not be a name with a negative connotation=.

There are wagon models in a Warlords or BtS scenario.
How about replace machine gun?

It's good to see that at least one person likes the idea.
And Leoreth didn't give a final No, so I'm still hoping he thinks it's unique enough as well :)
