You may have seen the first episode here. I've made a few changes based on member suggestions.

I'd ask for spoilers to be used so that nothing is given away too easily. You're free to talk about anything else though.

Be advised that you may find answers if you look at spoilers...

Micro Challenge II

You are Napoleon. [Civ Illustrated]

This is your regular start.
Spoiler :

You are not granted any bonus tech but Napoleon starts with Agriculture and The Wheel. Mining is provided for Settler difficulty as well.

The challenge: complete the following tasks by turn 37/500.
Normal :): 2 workboats, 1 granary, 1 worker, 1 lighthouse and a capital of size 4

Note: the workboats can be used to create fishing nets.

Settings
To avoid problems, events and barbarians will be disabled.

Difficulty
The everlasting questions of coastal starts: worker first or workboat first...

No hints for this one at the moment. Well, there is iron under the desert tile. Not sure it's useful though

Solution
All credits to nona_mouse for a solution.
My solution.

Lol! This one looks more interesting than the first, maybe even the anti-micro me will give this a peek :). There are indeed some hard choices here (tech path, worker micro). Unfortunately you gave us what to build and didn't allow enough time for a cutoff with improving the off-island tiles to be considered :D.

The save-file posted has Mining?

Oh right, I forget Settler difficulty gets Mining
Editing...

Is that necessarily so? I've only posted what you must absolutely have. Anything extra is bonus...

Spoiler :
It's kinda hard to give specific tasks on this one without giving away too much info. However, I don't really see anyone willing to skip any of those builds or able to produce all that AND a galley before T37

I'll be taking a crack at this later, a non-fishing coastal start...fuuuuuuu-should be an interesting learning experience though, probably the slowest start possible to play out.

I didn't realize this was on settler (will affect tech timing compared to what I'm used to seeing for certain), but the bigger constraint, as you point out, is what we need to attain. I'd expect that we'd be pretty close to the margins just managing the goals, so it would be difficult to do anything else without sacrificing the goals defined by the exercise, which are reasonable given the start.

The blow of not having Fishing is softened by the fact that you can probably tech it in like 3 turns on Settler.

Yeah. You could technically win this challenge only researching three techs (fishing, sailing and pottery), although it's hard to imagine hitting goals w/o BW also.

However, with the rate at which you tech them on settler, one MIGHT be able to get away with fudging the order...maybe .

To me the main question is the timing of pottery and the granary. I suspect it will be better to get it before sailing, but where does BW fit in compared to pottery and sailing? My GUESS without doing any #'s and just looking at the opening would be fishing --> BW --> Pottery --> sailing, as it would be difficult to come up with the :hammers: needed for fast workboats (and therefore faster high yields) without chops + maybe a whip. Granary beats lighthouse for food almost always and we need both, so pottery next makes the most sense...unless it somehow wins going before BW.

Well i came up 2 turns short. I guess i need to figure out a slightly more optimal build order.

A lot of fun!

Fishing -> Bronze Working -> Sailing -> Pottery

Now to revisit autosaves to figure out exactly what I did. ._.

T20 - Both seafood tiles are improved this turn. Size 2.
T24 - Lighthouse fished this turn, 20+ overflow into worker. Size 2.
T28 - Worker finished this turn, so whip previous turn? Size 2.
T32 - Granary was whipped this turn? Size 2 after whip.

Spoiler :

I had the corn farmed, both hills mined, and some roads built, but finished on T39. I'm guessing i screwed up somewhere with build order and/or overflow management.

Spoiler :
Normal done, Hard a little bit slow, Nightmare..I'm stumped, I can't finish it faster than t40. Solid step up in difficulty from the previous lil puzzle, kudos kossin.

Wow, struggling... TMIT, youtube it? ;)

I only got normal on 1st try.

More importantly, right now when I try to screencap civ IV it turns glitchy, as in the first thing (BTS menu) is all you see, and occasionally you will see about a 1/64 square of the screen in the video as I mouse over something, but not consistently.

I doubt very many people would have a clue what I was talking about like that.

oh darn, you can't overflow for more than the unit costs, can you? so if you try to whip a warrior with 14 hammers in it, only 15 hammers will overflow instead of 29. :(
