Fractal, fractal always changes. Pangaea, Continents, Isolation, Wacky Landblocks, Balanced, Imbalanced, Warfare: Mounted, Naval, Siege.

Fractal got it all. And it is loved and shunned by many.

Me, I love it! Especially in its cruel or WTH forms. Thread title should give you an idea which kind of map could this be.

Since leader was randomed, I feel no need for some epic introduction. Who doesn't know this guy?

Hints:
Spoiler :
Much better than it looks.

Spoiler :
If you don't get clear info with your starting unit move, it is good to SIP.

I have but one small favor to ask:

Spoiler :
No cultural victories please.:mischief:

Save requires BUFFY mod.

GL/HF!!!

If you wanted that favor upheld, you should have disabled it ;).

Isn't it disabled for the AI then?

Besides, this was just a random map I found to be very fun.

Hope you'll give it atry.

Cheers!

Edit: How is it a favor if it is enforced? :)

Arf! Real map is for real men, all the kids are impressed!

Will play, thanks for sharing. :D Random thoughts @The Start:
- Cows, wheat, 3H forested plains hills. Hammer rich. Combined with Aztecs awkward techs, there may be a case for skipping Mining until...
- Early wonders may be appealing.
- 3x 2H tiles to settle on. Moving settler to one of those can only lose 2 non-forest, non-flood plains tiles (2W1S and 2S1W).
- Maybe 2N of the scout is coastal and the eastern land is minimal.
- Southern hemisphere.

Scout moves:
- 2W1S : reveals 1 tile, riverside, possibly a special (relevant).
- 2N1E : reveals the most tiles, including 2N of scout (relevant).

Played a few turns in.

Spoiler :
From the opening screen I was seriously thinking about settling the stone, but I moved the scout south of the settler and revealed riverside corn. SIP it is.

Early tech path agriculture->masonry->wheel->pottery, next is AH. Obviously I agree with BiC that mining is not an early priority here.

Did the obvious thing:

Our immediate area seems like you could fogbust it alright with just warriors, but at 7 turns to slow-build how could you not? Won't try to build the 'Mids except for fail gold because it's already obvious that this game will be all about working cottages around the capital and non-stop whipping after CoL (when isn't it all about that with Monty? :crazyeye: ).

Possible semi-isolation, which means stealing techs is oh so efficient.

Also Shaka...this land is like...really good. It's like I don't even know you anymore.

@Ben-jammin

Spoiler :
Barb situation in my game: Had to 1pop whip a warrior not to lose a city. It was second warrior but barb archer had around 60% odds against my first warrior so second was a must. I think I won the battle so it may seem like a waste, but it is even worse losing a second city. GW handles that nicely.

However, I went for Mids. Whip whip whip, kills research. With Mids you can switch to Rep and Police state. One gets you better units, other makes war easier on economy, and makes whips more efficient. Besides, we do have many food sources, but we don't have lot of riverside cottages spots. Using food for research and war seems win-win for me (+ we have BFC stone).

On Fractal, you will often have more than one runaway AI. If you kill your research, you may face rifles and infantry without units to crack them, or will need Astronomy to reach them. This isn't Pangaea (although fractal can often be Pangaeaish). But you can't know that for sure (especially with locked modified assets :)). My recipe when going to total war is: get to the considerable tech lead, if possible, then have some war and accumulate gold. Vassal everyone having advanced techs to trade to you, or capable of fast research. When conquered cities come out of revolt (enough of them) and basic infra whipped, GAge and burn money in new military techs or Space program if lazy. I have been able to keep both research and military progress lately, which would be ideal, but it has taken some experience to get the feel for measure and map has to let you do that.

Also Shaka...this land is like...really good. It's like I don't even know you anymore.

I agree.:) I simply don't want to play really hard maps until I finish all the projects. Hard maps make me obsess too much.:crazyeye: But you can easily find yourself in a desperate situation on this map too if you play it too lazy.

Time for another 3 city cultural victory!

:mad::lol:

Since I already know the map layout, excuse me for my silenzio.:)

Whipping galore!!!

It is funny seeing, after whipping every second or third turn for at least 30 turns only 25 whip unhappiness.

Treat from my game (can be considered a bit spoilerish, but it'll help understanding the ''Runaway bride thing''):

Question: Which one is me, and guess the year :)

Yeah, I think the mids will end up being more useful for you than the GW will be for me. Every once in a while you play a game and see "Montezuma adopts Police State" in 1000BC and you think I wanna be that guy!

Spoiler :
I was hoping that just cottaging up the capital and maybe the floodplain city to the north, along with the gold, would be enough commerce to get me to my first war in time. It's all the other cities that'll be whipped non-stop :) Had I really gone for the pyramids I'm certain I'd have lost the wheat/clams/iron spot, as it is I only beat Pericles to it by a turn and there's no other iron to be had.

The real question is who to infiltrate with the GSpy? I guess Pericles makes the most sense because he's closest? I almost never do the early GSpy thing so I'm not really sure what's best, but I already have my espionage on Pericles to see what he's researching.

The game always shuts down when i open this save. i have the latest version of buffy installed. It loads and just when it's about to open the map it goes bye bye. Has anyone any idea why that might happen?

€: happens with other buffy saves also...

Do you use the BULL mod?
If yes, you need to restore the original CvGameCoreDLL.dll in BTS/Assets.

If not, you probably have a modified file(s) somewhere.

No I'm not using the Bull mod, I'm not capable to install it :( ^^
Modified files might come from several hopeless tries to get HoF working... I guess i have to reinstall everything completely at some point.

Yes thanks those were things i already checked when trying to participate in HoF games, but it just didn't work out for me.

I'm just going to reinstall and try those steps again, maybe it will work, maybe not :)

@2040 BC:
Spoiler :
2 pics say it all.
What I think I'm doing:
Spoiler :

Judaism founded on 2240 BC. Game may be tough, indeed:
Spoiler :

Size 9? Stonehenge + ToA?
Still, it looks better than my Suleiman 1300 AD save...

Tech path: Agri, Masonry, AH, Fishing, The Wheeel, Pottery. A bit of everything...
Build orders: Worker, Warrior, Great Wall at size 4, Settler, Settler, Worker at size 4.

Summary:
Moved scout to reveal wet corn, took the Stone bait (who would have figured?).
Lost scout near jungle on T8. Stationed Warrior to the East.
Delayed Pottery, Bronze & Writing, not necessarily great compared to a no-Masonry opening. Still glad I can pop G Spies + resist barb onslaught.
Next:
Road done next turn, cottage, chop, chop, chop.
GLH is probably out of order (never will have the production).
Pyramids are possible.
Settling on forest 3W of capital would prepare a palace move. City 3 may also be settled on or by the plains hills to the north. I think that will be city 4, though.
I need Bronze next to chop/improve.
Barb city will culture flip. It has no food that I can see save for the Cows.
Try and get an Academy. Usually I struggle building one with early wonders. May be easier, here, since city 2 could help.
Not sure about further tech targets.

This sometimes happens to me when I open a save directly from the forums with Civ instead of downloading it and opening it from in the game, but I guess it's happening to you loading the save from the game?

erm.... any hope of getting an immortal version of this?
Don't think I can hack deity yet, but this looks very interesting.

Impossible as far as I know. Locked Modified Assets is unbreakable unless someone hacks it.

I am sorry for the trouble BUFFY is causing you.
I stick to BUFFY so nothing messes up for SGOTM.

Now, reason for BUFFY not opening was almost always that I forgot to replace bull.dll with original .dll in Assets folder iIrc. Try checking you still have the original. I can upload the original .dll when I find myself by PC.

Immortal isn't possible due to locked modified assets. You may try deity anyway. I almost skipped immortal in my pursuit for greatness. You learn more from defeats.
