So, been waiting for a while until someone posted a DC with Brave New World, and since it's been a week and nobody did it I'll go ahead and post one. In this game, you'll be playing with Pedro II, my namesake!

In my opinion, Brazil is a very hard to play civ at Deity level, simply because it has no early to midgame bonuses of any kind, and Jungle bias makes it hard to build all the Wonders you need for a Cultural Victory, which is what you're built for. So, I decided taking off starting bias and rolled some maps until I got this one.

It looks like an easy map, until...

Spoiler :
...you see your neighbors. It's quite the murderer's row!

Settings are Pangaea, everything Standard with starting bias turned off.
Here's the starting screen (took it after I already moved my Warrior):

If it wasn't jungle start, it is not challenge at all.

Edit:  I withdraw what I said. It is extremely hard

Spoiler :
with Shaka so close to you and you have to face him from the beginning. I tried to bring the dirty water to Iroquis by agreeing to fight the same war with Shaka, everything is fine until they made peace and next turn Shaka turned against me. Even though NC is finished in the 70ish turns, have a handful of spears and archors to upgrade. Fighting two wars will be very ugly. Hence I surrender.

Looks like immortal is the best level for me, at least one can afford some abnormal strategies and various builds. It is impossible in deity and no fun at all. feelings like abusing myself :(

Spoiler :
Yeah, holy hell. If I hadn't prioritized Walls I would have been a smear under an Impi's foot. I sent my Caravan there hoping he wouldn't bust a profitable relationship but no. As it was I am so far behind that I don't foresee catching up. Zulu is brutal. I may finish this to see if I can grow out of constant war.

Iroquois, Zulu and Sweden are all running away in my game and even with a DoF I can't get Iroquois and Zulu to fight.

Gotta love these commentaries

I'm not an exception! I tried this and around the turn 55 before i can say WAHT TEH F...i was already dead. I think he attacked me with 5-6 swordmen, archers, spearmen, etc...He got my 3rd and cap cities in like 3 turns  My 3 archers and warrior werent enough i guess...:crazyeye:

Don't know how you can resist him if you don't beeline construction and ready up to upgrade. The good side is that i was be able to DoF 2 civs before it happened. Had 3 cities and 4 workers(2 rush bought). Maybe keep money for CBs instead heh...

It was my 1st deity run...what a blast!

Spoiler :
Zulu does lemming into Walls like nobody's business. Walls + Spearman + city damage + rivers everywhere handled the first attack. I made sure my Spearman's attack didn't finish anyone because if he was caught outside the Walls he was doomed. Zulu crashed 6 Warriors into my Walls and parked his Archers well within range. My hillside/river moat city (up near the Jungle Gold/Salt) with an Archer garrison also withstood a 2 Impi/1 Horseman assault. I allied with Antwerp (protect/Pyramids/project) and he chewed up half a dozen Zulu units.

It's actually potentially beneficial over the long run. I have DoF with Iroquois and Arabia so I can sell my Salt for bulk gold, Zulu swoops in and pillages it, I repair it and then do it all over again. But it's like having rabid Barbarians on your doorstep, constantly having to evac your Workers. I can't make a troop yet that will survive even one attack from Zulu's Impis or Horsemen, even when they are attacking across river. I don't think Zulu will get back up to strength to be a threat to taking a city but he is a huge pain in the neck. Until I deal with him trade routes aren't even an option and without that I don't think you can catch up and compete.

This is a ridiculous tough game. I settled on the hill across the river. Zulus spammed cities like crazy and DoWed me before T50. I managed to hold them off and settled a second city on the other side of the mountains near the CS (2 salt, gems, gold - very nice city). Zulus came back with a vengeance with Impis and knights around T90. I couldn't hold off the endless stream of units with just spears and cbs so gg. Just too much early focus on war to get my cities going at all - no trade routes and religion was falling behind even with DF. Will be interested to see if anyone can beat this. Shaka is too tough early when he has so much room. I also couldn't get Iroquois to war with him (thanks for nothing Hiawatha!).

Edit: BTW, Impis - what the heck are those things! My capital with Oligarchy only took them to about half, then it took 3 comp bow hits to finish them off. When he spams about 8 at you it's - yikes!

Spoiler :
It is a hard map. Great early preassure. Impis are cool with their uppgrade. Makes it hard for ones archers on flat terrain. And the run away civ Sweden is too far away to even think of disturbing any time before late game.

Finally a tough deity challenge, I thank the poster with my heart :)

Brazilwood improvments are much better than I thought. Very short build time, and after acustics the university cities with jungles yield insane amounts. :)

Science research in late game seems very slow now in BNW. Takes forever to get modern weapons for me

I haven't seen Zulus yet but from my previous games, I am significantly more scared at Ashurbanipal than Shaka. I bribed him to war gustavus in my last game around T50 and he took Gustavus' 3 cities and removed him from the game in 20 turns.

I was then forced to bribe him to war 2 more opponents to save myself (we had shared borders and I expanded towards him even more) he 3 more flatland cities in like 15 turns. I wanted to cry.

The 5% tech cost increase per city is probably a good chunk of your issue. The other is that you can no longer hoard GS as their beaker value is set upon spawn. In my 3 city culture VC on T271, I capped at around 1150 BPT so give or take the equivalent of 1000 BPT GNK.

Wide still has much more tech potential than tall but it has to be very selective wide, not just happiness capped wide.

Spoiler :

Went scout-scout-shrine (for DF!) -monument liberty build. I usually prefer liberty settler first build, but this time I got a culture ruin and there were two salts so I went citizenship first.

Around t15 I found that

1. lots of good expo places
2. I am basically Zulu's only neighbor

so I though I should beeline CB, and also to Xbows if needed. I checked every turn whether I could bribe zulu to DoW iroquis, and I finally succeed, although I had to play lots of gpt and marble.

After getting free settler I made 3 more settlers. Before that, I think I mainly build archers and 1 warrior so that I can upgrade it to swordman.

When Zulu made peace with iroquis (it was not a real war, anyway, as their borders were apart), I knew that it is coming - I could not even try pyramid and had to pump up units. I got lucky with CS quests so could save some gold so that I could upgrade 7-8 CBs and 3 swordman.

Using the river and "CS shield", I could easily defend his 1st wave. But things went bad after that - impi was so op! Sometimes it could one shot my CB. movement 3 and 3 buffalo upgrades.... and I needed 5-6 CBs to kill one impi, even with my general.

I knew that I could not take his city anyway and I might lose some units, so took white peace and started building-up. 1st screenshot shows that there was no lib except cap at t102... I could not even use liberty GE to rush NC, so I just used it for Machu Pichu.

Trade routes really helped me to catch up science. 2nd screenshot shows that out of 73 spt, 29 spt was coming from the trade routes....

I beelined to Xbows, as I knew that Zulu will come soon. I placed an citadel to defend - without it, 10+ impis would have killed all of my Xbows.

Meanwhile, China expanded like crazy but nobody DoWed her... and she took lots of wonders and leading in all numbers.

Zulu came again as expected, but he had much more than I expected. for my previous deity BNW games, I thought that AIs had too small army - maybe I have to take it back, or at least admit that it depends on civs. My original plan was def and kill his 1st and 2nd wave and push back, but it seems that defending before dynamite is a more realistic goal now.

This challenge is extra fun because of Zulu as neighbour. Impis have extra defense vs ranged and it maybe forces players to not only build archers like always. :)

Turn 237. My science is very slow . I probably do it all wrong, it is my first BNW game, and I probably should have deleted much more cities?

I run my favourit unit combo, artillery/cav. I save all my money to buy tons of anti aircraft units soon (I have 2 saved GS, so in 2 turns or so). :)

Truely especially if you found or find a religion with a jungle +1 culture pantheon. I find myself annoyed I can't just put a brazel camp instead on resources I already have that are over jungle.
