After learning so much from the last thread, I'm back with another start that made me go "oh no!"

This is now Immortal Challenge 13. Poland.

Starting Position:

Notes on the Start
Spoiler :

Turns out it's an isolated jungle start, and you start in the middle of huge swathes of jungle and marsh.

Turn 0 save attached.

Settings
Map: PerfectWorld3 map script.
DLC: All Civs and Wonders of the Ancient World.
Mods: You'll need the InfoAddict mod. This just provides extra statistics and doesn't change gameplay.
Speed: Quick
Size: Standard, 8 Civs

Spoiler :

So this one is much harder than the previous one - good thing is that we play Poland, a civ that can adjust to almost all situation thanks to its UA.

As I knew that we got isolated start, I started with the same opening as the previous one. monument - granary - worker - stonehenge - library - NC - settler - 2 caravans - oracle - etc.

I did not have enough cash to buy granary this time so I did hard build it. I pre-chopped (chop one turn and stop - later you can chop it with one turn) forest near 2nd city and chopped them asap.

Later, tech will be slower than the previous game as you do not have observatory at your cap. I opened rati with Poland UA when I got astro and had to use one GW to get secularism too (could not time my culture well so I had to choose a policy 2 turns before that)

SP: full tradition - pat right 1 - aesthetics - rati left 1 and going for right 2 (as you are going to make lots of trading posts on jungle tiles).

you can go for exploration or commerce instead of aesthetics. When I play quick speed, I tend to go for peaceful victories, but it's up to your choice.

In fact, getting 4-5 frigates from your 2nd city and get other capitals with lots of wonders seems to be the best option.

And if you want feedback from lots of people, I would suggest you to post this as a part of immortal challenge series. In my opinion, this map is much more like a 'challenge' compared to previous immortal challenges.

I would recommend getting rid of riverside jungle tiles in order to grant you more farms. Leave the rest (except luxury jungle tiles of course) and trading post them when you have the time.
Prioritize the Sacred Path pantheon (yay culture) and the Religious Community belief (every bit of production helps). Not even going to mention Education since that's what everyone should aim for any time.
I'm not an Immortal player but that's my general advice for a jungle start.

Cool idea. How do I post this as part of the immortal challenge series? Is there someone running the series, or should I just append it to their thread?

Maybe just open a new thread with "Immortal Challenge X, Poland..." and repost it or let the Mods rename this thread.

Yeah just ask mods to rename it.

Just a question- I can't seem to load it even with the InfoAddict mod loaded. It says that I don't have the DLC. Do I need the wonders of the ancient world DLC? Cause I think that's the only one that I don't have

EDIT: Sorry, I just realized there was a DLC button on the save game. It is indeed what I need :(

Beat this, but it wasn't easy...

Spoiler :

Opted for liberty, trying to leverage the isolated start into spamming cities like no tomorrow. Barbarians were a major pain in the rear though, and I had some serious gold issues early on (-10 and zero science for several turns).

Ended up founding 7 cities, for 8 in total.

Prioritized early exploration to get to know friendly CS and take advantage of Patronage/Consulates for free friendly with everyone.

SP: Liberty, Patronage, 2 in Aesthetics (unnecessarily, I thought I might do culture, then I met a runaway Morocco with (by the end of the game) 50k culture in the bank.

Then full Rationalism before Ideologies (finished Patronage -- had one policy left -- before I had to pick an Ideology). Almost everyone had picked Order, so I picked Order too because I didn't want to risk Ideology unhappiness. Started gunning for Science victory -- thought Diplomacy might be possible, but because of Austria marrying off City-States, would fall a little short (or require absurd amounts of gold to defeat the 200+ influence buffer AIs had in some City-States).

Squeaked out a victory on turn

Some screenshots:

At t164, dealing with unhappiness.

At t263, victory, stats.

Abused food caravans and sent 3 into Warsaw from my three outlying cities, then used the rest of my trade routes for $$ trade (oddly, all with Babylon which was 30 gpt, far and away better than anyone else).

I definitely need to figure out a standard priority queue for a liberty opening... I felt like I shot myself in the foot by sinking into -gold and orange unhappiness. I tried settling on every lux, even if I had that lux, figuring I could trade the duplicate to the AI for something unique -- but the AI was stingy/traded with themselves and thus I couldn't make use of my extra dye apart from 6 gpt until much later when I met everyone else and someone finally had spares I could trade.

Glad I managed to survive and win, but felt rocky and far behind all the way there. Was always behind in Science, probably from those rocky early turns of -gpt and severe unhappiness.

Gave it a try. Started with 2 cities NC then expanded with 2 more. I put my 2nd city coastal and the 2 others as well and built the Colossus to maximize cargo trades. I stole a worker from the cs and hard built 6 more(so much jungle/marsh tiles!). Bought a granary in 2nd city when i could. Sent the 2nd caravan to get more food in capital.

Picked Tradition, then 2 from Patronnage, then going for Exploration. Many coastal civs and watered map. Perfect to test this tree. Not trying to get super fast finishes, i'm just playing a game where the Exploration tree can be useful. I will probably end with a diplo or dom. victory because i'm not touching culture until they patch it.

I have sent a trireme west of the island and didn't encountered a single cs or civ. Swarm of barbs finally killed him a bit later. So i didn't discover anything else than Vancouver for a long time. But when i did i had some units around and could burn barb camps pretty rapidly and allied some cs.

Exchanged 2 luxs from other civs(late too) because my cities were eating happiness at lighting speed. I went into unhappiness for a dozen of turns before it went back ok.

note : Can't upload from imgur and photobucket not working for 9 days. So i'm using the standard upload system from CFC for now.

Edit : @glory7 : Why your gpt sucks so bad? Maybe that's why i don't like to stay with few cities for too long

can hardly imagine that the strategy from my guide with added pyramids and a potential colosus (wonder where in bo it mgiht fit in - maybe instead oracle) isnt best with this land the faster workers with pyras and even faster workers later will help a lot for sure ..

He trade his GPT for gold.

The AI doesnt seem to have a lot of gold in my game....and his AIs are neutral...so i doubt that he did trade for gold.

I'm being unable to install the mods... subscribed to them and restarted the game but nothing. I know this isn't a tech support thread but somebody knows what can I do to fix it? :P

Well, I considered your strategy but I chose tradition 2 cities instead - it would be nice if you show how to adopt that strategy at this map. I didn't use it because

1. This is isolated map, so going scouts first is not optimal (minor point)
2. You do not meet CSs and civs for a while so you cannot trade - it won't be easy to manage gpt at the beginning.
3. There are not that many unique lux - so many dyes but except that you only have whale at the bottom (obvious expo spot) and whale at the left (I considered 3rd city spot but just gave up). I thought it would be difficult to handle happiness. (major issue)

I only had one internationl trade route and did not have gold buildings at 2nd city - it is my habbit to focus on hammer and sci till I get secularism. So I build univ, observatory, workshop before market and cargo ship... Maybe I should change it as in BNW, gpt is not something that you can ignore.

When you subscribe they are automatically installed. What you need to do is to activate mods from the menu before launching the game.

I was lucky enough to get a Writing ruin at t13, so went for GL early and got it at t25. I went tradition and decided to do a simple non-aggressive tech game to see if I could get some Polish into space ;)

Early BO: Monument --> Scout --> Granery --> GL --> Shrine --> Worker

SP: Full tradition --> archeology (beeline for the early GA to find other civs & city states ASAP) --> Patronage: Only Aesthetics --> Full Rationalism --> Freedom.

Ended up founding 4 cities and taking Vancouver CS mid-game. Got astro around t90, and beelined on towards plastics. Was 1-2 eras ahead of everyone after t140, and had RAs with 4 civs for the remainder of the game.
