Some of you might remember the "Next War!" Scenario from vanilla BTS. I always hoped and begged somebody would make one. Nobody wanted... So, that's why I want to do that on my own. Before I start with the TH Era map, I think an industrial era map would be more helpfull - for balancing the game beyond the renaissance. When the industrial era map is finished, an TH era map would be much, much more easy to do since all the cities with their religions are already placed. You'd only need to change the Civs, Civics, Techs, Pops and Culture-Values and buildings - which isn't THAT hard with the editor.
Long story short: I'll start with the Industrial map. Since I'm lazy and a one-city-nation like Spain, Germany, most European states, some central america states would have no chance against a big nation like Russia or the USA, I decided to make only 7 civs on the map: One for each base culture (African, Northern America, etc). (If you prefer more nations, this can be easily make with the WB and editor in around 1 hour).
Ingame, I'll make up a story like:
"It's the year 2097. The world grew more and more together, boarders vanished. In the year 2061, a giant burst of cosmic energy hit the earth, destroying every electronic device - which was basically everything. People were looting and killing for food, many dies. Recently, some people managed to calm down the masses and esablish a goverment. Without the modern communication, a world wide empire could not be restored. Some ethnic goups remembered their origins and therefore, 7 empires appeared:
- Northern America, including Kanada, the USA, Greenland and Mexico
- Southern America, including Central America and Cuba
- Africa
- Europe
- the middle east
- Asia, including large parts of Russia
- Ociania, including Australia, New Zealand and most of the Islands in the Pacific.
These empires are resolute to recover their lost technology and wealth to grand their people a better life. But the resources are rare these days and it's questionable if the peace among these empires reminds...."
(Note: I know my English isn't really good, so if a native speaker wants to write this text, I'd really appreciate that)
-> I'm also thinking to reduce the resources, especially Coal, Oil, Natural Gas, Iron, Gold, Platinum etc. Maybe also some Animal- or Plant-Resources that went nearly extinct while the humans tried to survive after the burst. This will make room for more conflict.
While doing the Map, I thought of 6 steps:
1. Place all the cites on the Map and name them correctly.
-> Currently did this for America (North and South), Africa and the Middle East. I try to place them as correct as possible, but also place them on a good spot gameplay-wise (so EX I skiped NY, because it was to close to Washington DC). Also, the Map isn't a perfect earth map, too. It's hard to convert a round planet into a 2D Map. Some areas are streched out while others are compressed. Keep that in mind.
Once I placed them all I will upload the map so you can have a look and tell me which cities definetly need to be moved.
2. Making a list of Techs every civ should have (somewhere early industrial) and adjust the civics.
3. Adjust the cities culture-value, Pop and Religions; also empires gold.
4. Place Improvements...
5. Making a list of the building EVERY City should have. Then I add those to each city, and then I place the Wonders and some extra buildings (like some Drug related buildings in Columbia etc)
6. Placing Units and try to balance it as good as possible.
After every step I will upload the map so you can have a look. Balancing wouldn't be easy, but you can give weak nations more techs, give big nations more crime buildings, giving strong nations less improvements, fewer units...
Ok, that's the general plan. Note that this is the first map for me so maybe my 6-step-strategy isn't optimal. I'd like to hear comments on this from expirienced mappers.
Edit: Here is the Map with the cities on it. Some places in Siberia or the Pacific are quite empty. Also, I think the Asian Empire is way too big. I haven't count their cities but the have almost twice the score of every other civ.
1. I could leave it so and make Sibera very bad defended, so if you'd start an early war with the Middle East or Europe, you could hurt them quite bad. Also, Siberia would have quite small cities which hurt the economy of Asia more than it would help it. So maybe it is balanced, we will see.
2. I could split Asia into two parts.
3. The eastern part of russia could be "Middle East" as well.
Please have a look on that map and tell me if you demand any cities to be moved.
Edit: Works now.
