Civilization 5 - Game of the Month Training Series Game 66
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\//////////////////////////////////////////

Welcome to the Sixty-sixth game in the GOTM V Training Series! There are plenty of features in Civilization 5, Gods & Kings and Brave New World to explore and the Training Series games will allow new and old GOTM fans to try out these features in a friendly environment. You are all encouraged to post your questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads described below. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread. Before going into the details of this game, we would like to ask you to abide to our most sacred rule: don’t replay any turns. If you make a mistake, accept it and try to recover. It's better to do the bad moves in the Training Series instead of in the actual GOTM competition, once it starts.

In this game, the designated VC is Culture. All VCs are enabled but results will be published by fastest Culture victory turn.

In this game you will play as Polynesia and lead the Polynesian Empire to victory. It's a standard-sized mystery map played at Emperor difficulty and at standard pace. Culture is the designated VC for this game, all victory conditions are enabled. You will have until Sept 1st to complete the game and submit.

You must have the Brave New World expansion to play this game. Should you encounter difficulties with submitting your save, please attach it to your post in the After Action thread where Alan can pick it up to upgrade the submission system as needed. Thank you for your patience.

Civ V BNW - TSG66 Game Settings:
Playable Civ: Kamehameha - Polynesia
Number of AI Opponents: 7
Number of City-States: 16
Map type: Mystery
Map Size: Standard
Difficulty Level: Emperor
Game pace: Standard
Game options: No advanced game options were selected. Quick Combat and Quick Movement are disabled. (You may turn them on using the game options menu at any time during gameplay.)
Game Version: This game was created in Civ5 Brave New World version 1.0.3.18. Polynesia, Mongols, Brave New World and Gods and Kings are required for this game.

In this game, you will be playing as Kamehameha, you possess Wayfinding. You can embark and move over Oceans immediately. Units gain +1 Sight when embarked and +10% Combat Strength bonus if within 2 tiles of a Moai.

You can train the Maori Warrior, which replaced the standard Warrior. They possess the Haka War Dance promotion which strikes fear into nearby enemies making them less effective in combat. It replaces the warrior and only Polynesia may build it. Their promotion remains with them when upgrading. You may build immediately and do not need a resource to do so.

You can improve tiles with the Maoi when you unlock Construction. It provides a culture bonus and only Polynesia may create them. You do not need a resource to build them.

This is where you will start:

Information about threads associated with TSG
TSG Announcement thread (this one). This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don’t be afraid to ask questions). It’s also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Please don’t post any information from a game you have started. Instead use the next thread.

Opening Actions thread. This thread is used to discuss the game once it's on the way. There are no reading or posting restrictions as such (apart from normal decency), although we encourage players to use the spoiler tags for screenshots. Here you can post questions related to the game and share your achievements/anger/frustration/victories while you play. During the time the game is active, please do not post any information concerning the game outside of the spoiler threads including screen shots and videos.

After Action Report thread. In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state (preferably in the post title) your victory date and score, as recorded in the Hall of Fame, and the most important: your path to glory! , We will create a separate thread with the results at the end of the two week period (sorted by date and score). Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after two weeks, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.

File Upload System
We now have a game file upload system you can find here. Please use it to upload your completed first attempt by saving the game on the turn after your victory or defeat. (by using the "lemme play one more turn" feature)

This game runs for a month and ends Sunday, 1 September 2013.

The Save can be found here.

If I don't do a Rock-n-Roll show for over 9,000 I will consider it a loss.

interesting start. albeit i knew what setup was to be expected in this new GotM and was looking forward to it i haven't thought much about it recently or even tried to play cultural with Polynesia so far (in BNW, that is). now i'm just looking at the screenshot and so many questions pop into my mind that i wish i had prepared more. should one settle on the coast for sea trade routes or inland for more and longer Moai chains? which tech path should i chose? which SPs? i have a feeling i will mess it up terribly turn-wise :D
good luck everyone!

Exactly what Hyperion529 said applies to myself as well. No clue about BNW yet at all. Expecting to do really bad or even lose.

The starting position looks pretty good. However there will hardly be any Maois in that capital if settled in place and neither many landmarks/holy sites due to so much water/resources.

I really hope those two mountains off the coast have a 3rd or 4th land tile behind them, so both the reachable mountains would get extra culture from unworkable Maois next to them.

Since this is going to be my first Emperor game (and since I am pretty much noob in Civ) I expect to do badly or even worse, but for the learning experience I'll join the fray.

Starting spot looks rather nice, what with 2 unique luxes and 3 food tiles in vicinity. The lake seems like a little of a loss, but other than that I'd be even tempted to settle in place.

I thought about going for religious tourism route with the Sacred Sites reformation belief, but seeing the spot it does not seem very likely to garner one a FPT pantheon, so it may not be very viable unless there's a faith producing wonder somewhere nearby to settle 2nd/3rd ciry at it.

Been looking forward to this since I got BNW, I've been winning most games on Emperor so hopefully should do OK with this nice starting spot, although I haven't tried Polynesia yet so that could be interesting ;)

To win a cultural game you need to get more tourism than the other guys have culture. Early on there are two ways to get tourism points, religious buildings with a certain reformation belief and great works. Good luck!

Will have a try at this. Only won one culture game at Emperor and that was a fumbled attempt whilst attempting to learn the mechanics. My finish time was pretty pathetic.

I am moving to my new house (yay!) so I cannot play it yet, but this is promising.

For maois and more starting money, it is a good idea to settle on the silver.

Then you can fill the island with maoi at least.

First one of these I've tried.
I usually go for a VC that is biased in my civ's favour. Don't see how to make the UA, UU or UI work in my favour here, but I'll give it a go!

Good lack all.

Congratulations. Hope you have an easy move and a short settling in.

Just purchased BNW yesterday and was messing around with a culture game on King diff.

I like how they changed the deals to gpt unless you have a DoF. Wish they had changed it to gpt with a limit of 50g up front for each trade.

Should be interesting.

I'll definitely move the warrior to the eastern plains hill and will likely move the settler to the grassland hill next to the lake, provided that side is also coastal, so the capital will qualify for the stoneworks for the extra production and happiness and the garden. Depending on what I see with both and what the warrior discovers on the 2nd turn I'll either settler on the grassland hill for more early production or on the flat grassland next to the lake to keep the cows in the 3rd ring.

However, settling in place does let us get 2 Moai statues on the landmass across the water that the capital can work. It looks like a 3rd can be constructed on that "island" to power up the 2 the capital can work. In place prevents the stoneworks, but does allow the garden and definitely allows sea trade routes. With an internal sea trade route for production we can more than make up for losing the stoneworks.

I've already played about 15 BNW Culture VC games so far, including 3 Polynesia ones. Of course, that didn't stop me from forgetting about the Embarkation until about turn 60 or soo... sigh.

As a reminder for those that have not played Polynesia before, Maois can ONLY be built along the coast. I mention this since the in-game Civilopedia does not.

Youch--Emperor and a totally new VC! I'll probably try it after my Babylon King game I'm currently in, though. Thanks for jumping on the BNW GotMs so fast!

Going to give it a try.
This is a nice setup, only thing scary for me is Standard pace, cause I always play Epic pace.

I always move my warrior before settling, just in case, but I likely will settle in place. Try to get either stone circles or religious idols for pantheon, depending on distribution of resources outside the initial fog.
I does look like more coast near the cows, though it could just be the beginning of the desert, in which case I might consider founding city 2 up there for a holy land.
Definitely plan to get a trireme around the world early to maximize trading partners and minimize tech costs.
