May I ask what it is? I am assuming that it is not a Korean Turtle ship, as those were rowed, while this one had plenty of sails.

It's a unit graphic called Baode Luan made by Aaglo a unit maker on this forum.

By any chance do you work for MicroSoft?

I know that Aaglo is a unit maker on this forum, but that does not explain what sort of ship the "Baode Luah" is or what civilization would be using it. That it is multi-masted sailing ship is obvious, and based on who is using it, I would assume an Asian origin.

Well from the link it is seems to be a replacement for the Galleon made for China. It's the kind of ship Zhung He used to sail to Africa with I think. I told you the name since I thought that would be a help.

You're not alone in your skepticism:

Archaeological Research Into Zheng He's Ships (By a retired Chinese admiral: very thorough.)

... Then again: Chinese Video on "Treasure Ship" Reconstruction.

BTW, pretty much every other account I looked at fully shared your doubts.

Enjoy!

The longest wooden-built ships that I have accurate data on are the Lord Clyde and Lord Warden wooden ironclads built in the UK, which were 280 feet long, but had a lot of iron bracing in the structure along with a complete armor belt at the water line, which would also act to resist hogging and sagging. I also have several books on wooden shipbuilding, and once you get past 200 feet, even with iron or steel reinforcing straps and beams, you are asking for problems. Also, looking at the crew numbers in the reference you cite, that adds up to me of a sailing ship of roughly 150 to 180 feet or so, not over 400.

I think the original idea for this thread was to show that it is possible for a ship to take a city. Has anyone else tested this ? I thought it wasn't possible.

There is a bug that occasional will let a ship take a city. It happened in WW2 Global every now and then, but still extremely rare. Other than that, xiaoxiao probably modded the unit to be able to traverse over land and water, which I believe when done so, the unit can attack ground units, and can capture a city (been a while though since I messed around with that). But the AI cannot use such a unit.

It´s the privateeer bug:

How do you modify the game to allow a unit to traverse both water and land, as that would be ideal for a unit such as a Zeppelin or one of the aerial battleships from Burroughs' Barsoom or the aerial flyers in Space 1889?

Per example by making it a mobile airunit (immobile flag removed). The backside of this methode is, that each attack by a land or seaunit will kill that mobile airunit, as the unit has no defense. On the other side there is a bug for mobile HN airunits with defense zero, making those units invulnerable against attacks.

Of course I´m interested, too, how you, xiaoxiaoa, set up your units for that job. For such an explanation you don´t need screenshots. So please, xiaoxiaoa, explain us, how you set up your attacking and defending units (looking like ships). :)

Interesting, but don't believe the above was the reason. In Rocoteh's WW2 Global, battleships e.g. would occasionally attack a land unit like infantry (fortified in a city) from sea, and kill it and take cities once the land units were all defeated. It was crazy because there was no way the infantry units could ever hold up against the offense of the ships. I am certain that the ships in that mod were not privateers, and I don't believe there were any privateer-ships either. I believe it was just a game fluke that had a chance to happen. Many people have reported this in their games over the years in Rocotehs' thread.
