The Nobles' Club series started out as a way for Noble-level (and below) players to improve their game. Most of the original participants now play at much higher levels, so this has become a way for advanced players to help others learn to play better. You can play your own game at any level and with any mod, but it would be nice to comment on the games of other players and give them advice.

Our next leader is Roosevelt of America, whom we last played in NC LXXXII; we last played the Americans under Washington in NC CXIII. The Americans start with Fishing and Agriculture.
  • Traits: Roosevelt is Industrious and Organized. IND gives +50%:hammer: on wonders (both World and National) and doubles production speed for forges (for early-game production). ORG reduces city maintenance costs (allowing bigger empires sooner) and doubles production speed of courthouses (also nice for bigger empires sooner), lighthouses (for faster growth of coastal cities) and factories (for late-game production). Roosevelt is known as the best TGLH-Strategy leader.
  • The UB: The Mall, a Supermarket that gives :gold: and :). It comes quite late in the game, so some players consider it very weak compared to other UBs. The extra cash might be useful in keeping research at a higher rate in the late game, where it could make a difference in a space victory race.

  • The UU: The Navy Seal, a Marine with March promotion (can heal while moving) and 1-2 first strikes (one of few late-game units to have them), making it a very strong late-game military unit. Like the UB, some players consider it weak because they're in too strong a position at that point to need it (or have won the game already).

And the start:

Spoiler map details :
Normal Fractal map.
Spoiler edits :
Added uranium island !
Finally, a cut and paste of our standard doctrine:The WB-saves are attached (zipped; they are bigger than standard saves). To play, simply download and unzip it into your BTS/Saves/WorldBuilder folder. Start the game, and load your favorite MOD (if you use one, if not, check out the BUG MOD), select "Play Scenario", and look for "NC CXXIX Roosevelt Noble" (or Monarch, etc., for higher levels). You can play with your favorite MOD at the Level and Speed of your choice. From Quick-Warlord to Marathon-Deity, all are welcome! We stuck with the name "Nobles Club" because it has a cool ring to it.
Spoiler what's up with specific difficulties :
In each scenario file you can select your level of difficulty, but that doesn't give the AI the right bonus techs by itself. Use the Noble save for all levels at and below Prince. The Monarch save gives all the AI Archery. Emperor adds Hunting; Immortal adds Agriculture; Deity adds The Wheel.

For players on Monarch or above, you should add archery as a tech for the barbarians (if you don't, the AI will capture their cities very early). This cannot be done in the WB save file and must be done in Worldbuilder as follows:
Spoiler how to add techs to the barbarians :

  1. Zoom in all the way so you can't see the rest of the map.
  2. Use the CTRL-W key (or the menu) to enter the worldbuilder. Avoid looking at the mini-map in the lower right corner.
  3. By default you're in "player" mode (look in the box in the upper right; the icon that looks like a person should be selected). You'll get a drop down menu labeled with your leader's name. Barbarians are at the bottom, so cover the rest of the list with your hand if you don't want to see who else is on the map. Select "Barbarians".
  4. Select the "Technologies" tab in the box on the left.
  5. Find Archery (the arrow head icon; 8th row, 3rd column from the right) and click it.
  6. Exit the worldbuilder.
  7. Zoom out again after the map fades, and start playing.
Spoiler huts and events :
Note: The standard saves have no huts and have events turned off. If you want tribal villages and random events, choose the saves with "Huts" in their names. If you want huts but no events, select the Huts saves and use Custom Scenario to turn on the option that suppresses events.

Special Thanks to Doshin who helped me to make edits to this map and lymond who told me how to transform Vanilla save to BtS form, even though this map wasn't created by Vanilla! Thanks! :worship:!

I am going to play this. Small turnsets and so on. Monarch NHNE.

So, where should I settle, SiP or 1E?

Some random ideas...

Played a few turns in (Immortal), and I'd be very tempted to go the following route..

Spoiler :

AH -> Mining -> Mysticism -> Meditation -> Priesthood

Build Oracle and take Horseback Riding, and while building Barracks+Stables ->
The Wheel -> Hunting -> Archery -> Bronze working immediately after

(to see where there is copper to insta pillage the mine 1 turn into the war, and of course to chop/whip Horse archers)

To fuel research (which is usually the limiting factor) and because being industrious (which is OP) I may want to build Stonehenge in the 2nd city for fail gold.

The Great Priest from the Oracle can shrine Buddism or whatever (since Brennus pretty much always goes for that) if I can snag the Capital at that point.

Will probably research Pottery -> Writing with the capture gold and try to trade HBR for Alphabet with some other civ.

At a first glance the map looks fun and in conjunction with the leader encourages several different strategies. I'll try to finish this later but I'm a bit short on time ATM.

I want lymond's help! Otherwise I don't settle :nope:! Nah, just kidding, I just wanna discussion of where to settle, I want to kick Monarch's butt this time! Stupid Freddy the Peacevassaler messed my Cow game totally up.

Yeah not sure why you would waste a grasslands hill by settling on it. You're just off the coast but on a river so SIP looks like the best option.

Warrior 1 SE to see if more food (plainhill sheep is a #$% ). If not, settle 1N for more rivertiles and hope for some decent farm resource.

@robert: why 1E? I don't see any advantages of that over SIP. What did you have in mind?

Edit: Please update the orange bit near the end of the 1st post that tells people what file to load.

Thanks for the reply, to dalamb and NZ both. Well, I'm gonna post the game to learn much more concepts of the game. So, I thought that settling on the hill would save one rivertile cottage place. Is that still worse compared to SiP. Tell me how did you guys want to SiP, why is it better? I'm not being critic, just wanna know reasons because I'm a noob who wants to learn. Edit: Fixed the orange thing.

Hey dalamb! I made a big job on fixing all the orange parts in all NC games I've hosted! Can I have a banana smiley as a reward from you?

Emperor, Epic, 30 turns in or so

Spoiler :
SiP, thought about gambling and moving the settler 2S1E to the hill in hope of some fish, but upon seeing the corn to the east, decided against it, would take away from any decent city trying to work it.

Tech is AH-MIN-BW-TW-MYS-POT

I improved Cow, Pig, then Horse, I assume this is the best order?

I think I should have teched TW before BW so my worker could do something more useful than build a mine which wouldn't be used for another handful of turns, but I was worried BW might reveal something which could affect my planned city placement, but I don't think it's as inefficient as I originally thought; would have lost turns bringing the worker back to build the mine later.

Settled the Corn and Cows first, then the river site up north.

I want to get a worker off Brennus (don't think we're going to be friends) but can't find any so far...

Kinda have to go for the Oracle with this setup, I think I'm going to take MC instead of CoL though, want the cheap forges asap.

Other than that, guess it'l' be Cat+Ele for Brennus, if he's slow to hook up any metal he might have, maybe I'll harass with HA.

Still unsure about my city placements, not an awful lot of choice but think this setup's ok?

I'd move the warrior 1SW as it will reveal tiles to the SE and N/NW

I'd likely just settle in place, unless some food presents itself. This city obviously is not great for food, but should be a fine production city and allow you to expand at a good pace.

@Jelloholic

Spoiler :

New york is good. The position is complicated, though. The problem is that the cows are the only food resource for the land to the west, which means you have the corn to share between New York and your current location for the silver. There are a lot of flat green tiles near by, so maybe it works out that you micro the food around and NY works a zillion cottages.

There's a more flexible location for the silver city.

Boston... I think the position of Boston is a bit weak. It fits with your map (though maybe that northern city should be south of the spices?), but I'm not convinced that city on the north east coast deserves the cows. My guess is that Boston should be on the desert hill, with the cows eventually feeding a city on the plains hill between Boston and NY, and another city sharing the flood plains on one of the ivory -- presumably the northern one.

The remaining land in the NE corner gets claimed by a fishing village parked on the plains hill at the corner of the river.

Noooo :aargh: :aargh: :aargh:!!! It..happened once again. The..the map is almost unedited!! My work has been not worth it!! I forgot that the files are unedited when Doshin gave me unbroken files! Sniff.. Anyways, thanks for banana rate dalamb, it helps.

My early tech order was: AH - Mining - BW - Sailing - TW - Masonry - Mysticism - Hunting - Writing - HBR - Alphabet - Currency. Just like Jelloholic, I also think that I should have researched The Wheel before BW. Or Sailing. Getting early cities connected via trade routes is very important. Spending time researching BW can delay the trade routes quite a lot.

I settled New York to the east, on the hill next to the dry coastal Corn, and prepared it for The Great Lighthouse which was completed in 975 BC. In order to take advantage of the extra 2 trade routes provided by the GLH, my next 2 cities had to be coastal. Boston got settled on the desert hill to the north, next to the Cow resource. Philadelphia secured the Silver resource to the SW. It didn't have food in its 1st ring, but again - getting the extra TRs was the most important priority. After a border pop with a Monument, it got the Corn resource.

My first GS was extremely late - 100 BC! Washington had extremely poor commerce, so I didn't waste him on an Academy. An HA rush against Brennus was in preparation, but I didn't have Currency yet. So I just fired a Golden Age in order to secure Currency.

Attacked Brennus with an initial force of 18 HAs or so in 150 AD. Brennus had spread out so the war lasted until 650 AD. Luckily I met no Longbows, though I was prepared for that. With an exception of border skirmishes with Mansa and Wang, a long period of economy-oriented game followed. Beelined Banking for Merc, Constitution for Rep and Democracy for SoL. The relations with Toku became so good that he opened borders with me and even became my vassal.

Finally, I declared on Mansa/Hatty when I had built some Infantry and Artillery. A couple of turns later, Wang DoWed on me. Being not interested in fighting on multiple fronts, I pulled back my invasion force from Gao and concentrated on pacifying Wang. After wiping out his main stack and capturing 3 cities I accepted his capitulation.

Although I was preparing for the second invasion to Mansa's and Hatty's continent, I tested the Diplomatic victory. Test successful :)

Robert, thanks for the map :)

Congratulations, Rfcfanatic! Another EMP-victory! Anyways, I'm gonna probably SiP since you guys said its fine, and I'm gonna tech AH first because of two AH resources. What shall I do after that? Warrior is gonna scout the 2nd city spot. Build order: worker-warrior.
