BNW deity culture game is the new toy, so here is another hard one.

Yesterday I lost a France game by 3 turns at turn 323 to Iroquios science win, so I decided to fire another one, but this time the random number generator is even worse. The save file deserves to be shared for your challenge;).

I doubt I can win this one for the first try but I trust the CiV community will teach me how to play a culture game despite all insane ai civs.

How about a little contest:
First place goes to any culture win by avoiding all war during game.
Second place goes to any culture win but only dominates one civ.
Third place goes to any culture oriented win (backed by diplomatic win)

here is the map

Below is the true spoiler: do not click for the first try
Spoiler :
Culture opponents: Brazil; Wonder whore: Egypt; God-like: India (India got two religious buildings and +2 faith founder and the +2 tourism each building in my game:eek:), Arab; CS competitor: Sweden; add to your insult to injury: Zulu and Aztec at your door step...

I didn't pick the civs:p

However there may be some saving factors:
Stonehedge available even by turn 39.
Two powerful natural wonders closeby.
Tons of CS close by.
And Shaka can be your attack dog (theoretically) :mischief:

Spoiler :
I could not make the dog attack anyone else. He came at me.

Spoiler :
You must be aggressively settling towards him, in my game so far he is friendly after I send a caravan to him and Monty settles near him.

So where do I put the save files? Ima give this a crack

In My documents, Civilization 5, saves, single folder

Spoiler :
This map is hard, you don't really have good room to settle going Tradition (there's the obvious Lake Victoria spot, and nothing else except Shaka's land). The best spots around you are taken by CS, and you don't *really* want to grab those.

First attempt, the dog came at me. I wasn't ready, got stomped. Will try again. :(

Seriously, I can't stand these Shaka games anymore. He's basically impossible to defend, so you either bribe him off or die horribly. It is not fun, they need to balance it out a bit.

Not that I can't win the games (I did win some DCs with him nearby), but it's just not balanced. He needs a nerf.

I love Shaka. He bribed me in the real world. I'm now his minion...always saying this word to me...

I have to learn how to do an effective cultural victory before moving in.

Deity is normally too hard for me, but I like the French and culture win;)
Spoiler :
I found the zulus, and almost quit automatically. Their Impis are too OP. But my start was excellent, Paris could build CB every 3-4 turns, so I thought what the heck I'll try one more time. I allied Monty and DoWed Shaka quite early. His warriors and archers were crushed in front of my gates, and I sent eight veteran CBs and two swordmen to conquer his undefended cities:king:

Spoiler :
ANY other civ would be dead in ten turns, but by now (turn 90) he had got his first Impis. Three CBs and improved city attack deal maybe 60 HP in dmg in total agains one, and the Impi heal 40 back. My huge army was utterly smashed and I ragequit. I knew it. This is 100% certain my last deity game agains Zulus.

Added some screenshots for good measure, don't know how to give them spoiler tags:blush:

Or you can fight him.

I can't stand re-rolling for a perfect turtling location. (since a while ago) It is much easier to accept that t.250 CV is inaccessible here and fight with a happy heart. :D You can win t.295 CV later, still.

If he attacks you on Medieval, it is absolutely impossible to win. It's easy to kill him after Industrial, when the Iklwa's upgrades fade away and you usually get ahead of him in tech. And if you have an earlier military bonus, you can crush him before he gets to Impis (I did it with Mayans on a map posted in a thread this week, and I'm pretty sure a bunch of other civs can fight him properly BEFORE Impis appear).

Of course, bribing him is very easy, blah blah. That's not the point. The point is that EVERY SINGLE GAME where Shaka is close is the same, and it's boring. And the forum currently has a fixation with him, lol.

P.S.: I'm playing the map anyway, and currently am on turn 170. Will post the win screenshots later when I finish it :P

urgh... this is tough... I can't access Uluru because of CS and the plains start is just horrible...

Spoiler :

Your Orleans was my plan to settle but when Shaka settled first there I changed my plan to settle closer to Paris on that hill, which also grabs the gem and sugar in the third ring.

And third Victoria Lake city I made it coastal for late game trade routes across the sea.

I learnt in the Brazil game that Shaka should be avoided early on at all cost, which means avoid forward settling.

Spoiler :
In my game Monty settled right next to him and next turn Shaka becomes friendly.

I moved Paris up to settle near lake Victoria, 15+ good tiles away from Ulundi and STILL Shaka came for me  despite not having settled anywhere near me.

It's not just a matter of settling far. He has to be kept busy or he will hit on one of his immediate neighbors.

In this very game, We are his only immediate neighbor and the only AI we might even remotely come close to bribe him against will probably have the highest military strength until jaguars become obsolete/shaka techs CS.

So I think, like Moriarte, that the best way is to just go out on Shaka early. For all I care, early wars don't earn you any additional GWs or anything truly special towards CV. It's really picking on, say, Ghandi on T150-T200 that would be absurdly game breaking. It's not like Shaka would be a runaway culture AI anyway...

Plus, a Napoleon lends itself extremely well to WIDE CV. He's the only one that can achieve it very reliably by just spamming Chateaus. Moais and Brazilwoods' tile requirements kinda prevent that.

Spoiler :
Did you see his the terrain surrounding Shaka's cap in this game?! I'd REALLY love to see a successful CB rush there before he gets to Impis, lol.

The jerk even gets to found a Religion this time (not sure how, but he did on my two attempts)
