Above me is a map. On this map, there is a variety of colors, marking down a variety of states.

The year is unknown. The name of these states is unknown. Their history, culture, diplomacy, economy, is unknown. It is your duty to fill in these missing details, along with other interested persons.

You can name states, give them governments - simple things like that, that you do in most IOTs.

However, you can also give me their entire history; give me the history of an entire region, or the entire planet. First come first serve in terms of this, as long as it is not stupid; anyone after that will have to make their history fit the original.

Culture and religion are unknown. You may use real cultures, you may mix real cultures together into unique blends, or you may make entirely new ones; the choice is yours. There is no religion present currently, but you can change that; the only rule is that there must be at least 3 major faiths. You may name them, tell me about them, do whatever you want with them; they could be anything from existing Christianity to worshipping stones on the sea shore. Light grey provinces are provinces with either no central state or are uninhabited.

Eventually, when the worldbuilding is done, a game might be made out of this. You cannot reserve a nation in advance.

I reserve the right to veto anything I deem ridiculous or detrimental to the experience as a whole.

You have (almost) completely free artistic freedom. You may write as little or as much as you want.

Go.

The Most Free Republic of Spain

C9Gz1wp.png

Government: Presidential Dictatorship
President: Jesus Lanzol
Official Religion: None, Hussite (Most widely practiced)
History: Jesus Lanzol is the benevolent dictator of Spain. He rigs the votes, but is still supported anyway. At least, unless you don't count the civil war three years ago. Several regions of Spain votes to secede from the republic of the grounds that Jesus Lanzol has turned it into a dictatorship. Being the benevolent Dictator he is, he let them go, content to rule over his loyal subjects. The new country north of Spain was overthrown by a fascist radical shortly there after, so the Republic of Spain keeps its spot as the most free country on the Iberian peninsula.

Just a note that, if someone hasn't already written about it in a post about that nation, you can write about it. No nations are 'claimed,' even if someone is already writing about it. Just make sure everything fits together somewhat coherently.

A brief history of the Occitaine Kingdom

The Occitaine Kingdom, also known as the Kingdom Of Toulouse, was founded in the year 890 by Charles of the Carolingian branch, henceforth King Charles I.
It was after a short while that several heretic sects began to shoot up around the kingdom. In an act revolutionary for this time, King Lothar I passed the Laws of Tolerance in 1100. As such, the region was condemned by the Papacy, but by 1200 had fully stabilized again after a 50-year rule of an antipope based in Avignon.
The Kingdom is officially Waldensian since the great Waldensian Reformations of 1400, but the Laws of Tolerance are still in place, only expanding to accomodate more and more religions and relgious groups. At this point in time it is ruled by king Charles V. The king must answer to a legislative body known as the Occitaine Thing, inspired by the Viking's earlier democratic forms of government. The Thing passes the laws and reviews actions of the Monarch.
The last king to lead his troops into battle was king Lothar III in 1800 in a war against Burgundy.

I will play as a corporate empire that be the light green that has Portugal, South Africa, Sri Lanka etch.

HQ is in Capetown.

I will work out name and other details later on.

Judging by all the entrances so far, I am judging that the date is between 1700-1900. This can change if there's a large enough consensus, but somewhere in that range seems fine for now. Someone should probably come up with a date, though.

Oh, one last thing. I don't mind if you compile everything in one post (and I would in fact appreciate it if you did), please post the stuff you're updating it with + a link to the post when you update it so that people know that things are changing.

Empire of Manchuria

The Empire of Manchuria is an absolute monarchy, ruled by the Qing Dynasty, that controls Manchuria, Siberia, Mongolia, parts of Tibet and Korea. The Qing Dynasty came to power in 1644 and by 1718, it had conquered all of Korea and the majority of Eastern Siberia, Northern Tibet and Mongolia. The Empire has a huge population, allowing it to field a huge army, but the majority of it's soldiers stll use medieval tactics. The elite force of the Empire is the "Division of the Heaven Archers", a force of horse archers.

In foreign policy, the Emperor is considered the Son of Heaven and everyone outside the Empire is considered to be a Barbarian. However, the might of the European powers has forced the Empire to make Korea a "Special Territory", where Europeans are allowed to live and trade. If a European commits a crime in Korea, he is judged by European Judges, not Manchurians. The Europeans have also forced the Empire to accept Opium Trade

In religion, Manchuria has a Buddhist majority, but the state religion is Confucianism. Shamanism is also practised in parts of Siberia. Many of the Shamanist religious groups are anti-European and promote violence against the foreigners, and the Qing Government has been forced by the Europeans to hunt down those who are members of Shamanist Groups. The Manchurians have also developed several martial arts. The majority of them come from China and the Shaolin Temple. Those martial arts are called Kung Fu.

The pink in Spain/North Africa is...

People's Carthage (once I dig up the Phoenician spelling of Carthage I will rename it to that).

Government: Communist Dictatorship

History: After the defeat in the first Punic War, Hannibal successfully marched his elephants across the Alps and crushed Roman army after Roman army. However, one night, he had a dream about using elephant-driven siege equipment, and took Rome in several weeks. After Rome was taken, the Roman Empire fell apart, and Carthage became the sole power in the Mediterranean. At its peak it had the entire Mediterranean under its control, having subjugated Greece, Anatolia, and Phoenicia, and having made Egypt into a protectorate of the empire. Persia was a valuable ally and trading partner, and the Celts in France were also good trading partners as well as buffers against the barbarians. Due to a gradual decline and economic problems, in 330 AD, the emperor decided to split the empire in two. The west consisted of Carthage/Libya westward in Africa, the areas of Spain and Southern France that had been colonized (the rest was still Gallic), and the colonized areas of Italy (southern Italy, Corsica, Sardinia, and Sicily mostly, as Rome had been lost to Vandal invaders). The east had its capital in Tyre, and held the rest of North Africa, the Levant, Anatolia, and Greece. However, when the Arabs invaded, the Eastern empire crumbled, but the Western half survived due to using the Celts as a buffer against Barbarians and a crucial victory at Carthage against the Arabs, at the price of losing Libya. After that, Carthage was the oldest, most urbanized, and most cultured power in Europe during the Medieval Era, and it grew rich from trade through the Strait of Gibraltar. However, after the discovery of America by the Portuguese-financed Christopher Colombus in 1492, Carthages's economy crashed, and its power declined. It remained in a state of stagnation for the next 400 years, until a Communist revolution overthrew the weak emperor and the true rulers of the country, the corporations. Now, Carthage stands ready to reclaim its glory of old.

Culture and Religion: Carthaginian cities are highly urbanized, but now they are turning from centers of patronized art and science to gritty industrial cities. Before the revolution, the rich capitalists were the patrons of many great artists and scientists, but that part of Carthaginian culture collapsed after the revolution. The Phoenician Pantheon is still practiced (though baby dolls are now sacrificed to the gods in times of trouble instead of real babies). Islam is a small minority, but it is tolerated.

Economy: The Carthaginian economy, once based on trade and the seas, is now heavily industrialized and is a planned economy.

Military: The Carthaginian military is reasonably strong, though not particularly weak, powerful, or unique.

So, for its early history, Carthage is basically Rome in Tunisia rather than Rome in Rome? Interesting.

Anything else in that 400 years of stagnation? If a nation doesn't do anything for 400 years it tends to get annexed by its neighbors.
