Civilization V: Brave New World Fall Patch Public Beta
Greeting all!
Here at Firaxis weve been working hard on the Brave New World fall balance patch. Weve scouted the forums, had some great interactions tracking down difficult bugs and reviewing your feedback, and now its time to release an update that we hope will make the experience even better!
In preparation for releasing the patch to our entire community of fans, we wanted to try something different this time.
For the first time, we would like to release a public beta (to run from October 1 through October 7) so anyone thats interested has a chance to take a look through our work, take it for a spin, and if you spot anything that is not doing what its supposed to be doing, you can help us address the problem.
Thank you so much for your help, and we look forward to working with all of you! Youll find the change-list after the instructions below.
To make this as efficient as possible, wed like to follow some basic guidelines:
Downloading the main game beta:
Downloading the SDK beta:
Removing the beta:

- We are using this as an opportunity to correct bugs with the game. Because we are close to release, new features or additions cannot be considered.
- We are focusing primarily on functionality related to the patch change-list, with a secondary priority on older bugs that we might have missed.
- To keep things moving at a brisk rate, if you spot a bug, please post a new thread to the 2K Civilization support forum (http://tinyurl.com/n93yx2z) with the subject starting with [BETA], so something like this: [BETA] The new Great Work The Kiss image isnt displaying. This helps the engineers to quickly pinpoint beta specific bugs while browsing the forum. We will also be monitoring the Civ5 Bug Reports forum at CivFanatics.
- Within the thread, please post a save of the turn before the problem reveals itself, along with a description of what you did, and any other supporting info you think would help, like a screenshot. This will allow our engineers to grab the save, and see whats causing the problem quickly.
- If you experience a crash while playing, go to the root folder of the game (mine is located here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization V\), and check for a [filename].mdmp file that corresponds to the date and time of the crash. If you have one, please zip it up and post it to the support forum in the format above.
Downloading the main game beta:
- Right-click on the game name within Steam, and select Properties.
- Select the BETAS tab.
- Enter the password publicbetaplease into the text field, and click Check Code.
- After the code is verified, select publicbeta from the pull-down menu.
- Click Close.
- Within a few minutes, the update will start to download.
- Once the update completes, you will know if the update was a success if you start the game, and the version number under the main menu reads 1.0.3.124.
Downloading the SDK beta:
- Right-click on the SDK name within the Tools section of Steam, and select Properties.
- Select the BETAS tab.
- Enter the password publicsdkbetaplease into the text field, and click Check Code.
- After the code is verified, select publicsdkbeta from the pull-down menu.
- Click Close.
- Within a few minutes, the update will start to download.
- Once the update completes, you will know if the update was a success if you start the SDK, and see an option for Dedicated Server on the selection menu.
Removing the beta:
- Right-click on the game name in Steam, or the SDK within the Tools section of Steam, and select Properties.
- Select the BETAS tab.
- Select None from the pull-down menu.
- Click Close.
- Within a few minutes, the build will revert to the public retail version.
Known Issues:
- We are still performing localization, so if youre playing in a different language, you may still experience a text key or two thats not translated. Simply post it to the support forum noted above, and we can verify that its in process.
- The pitboss server currently needs to be on a computer that will not go to sleep, and will not lock, otherwise you risk the server crashing. Please disable sleep on any system that you designate as your dedicated server. Having the display go to sleep is fine; just dont let the PC itself go into sleep mode.
Other Tidbits:
- Saves created during the beta will not be usable if you try to use them with the existing public build of the game. If you want to continue a game created during the beta, you will be able to use it when the patch officially goes live.
- Saves created BEFORE the beta can be loaded into the beta, but we would recommend starting a new game for the purposes of the test.
