Archipelago should make it interesting. Good for exploring/trade. Not too many early conquests, I suspect.

... Land Form: ARCHIPELAGOES; ....

Duuhhh... I would have explored in a slightly different pattern it I had bothered to carefully read all the starting conditions. I missed out on some expansion because I made calculated risks based on "normal" patterns, at times when the terrain seemed like a dead end. Oh well, at least it was so forested that it would not have been much use in BC/ealry AD anyway.

This game is a slow-starter because of the terrain... it will be interesting to see people's progression in 1AD and 1000AD, LOL!

Hey Thunderfall, you will never believe me but... although I'm a fanatic, I never played GOTM before. That's why I decided to celebrate my fanatism by playing the 6th GOTM. Sorry Matrix but you'll have extra work
Anyway not so much work since I'm sure I'll get crushed before 0AD. It's emperor level.

Please guys, wish me good luck for my first (and hopefully not last) trial. Thanks

Come on now, tell the truth... you won't last that long!

Please guys, wish me good luck for my first (and hopefully not last) trial. Thanks

If you are not used to Deity/Emperor level play, you will probably have a rude awakening. This particular game is a "slow-starter", and you'll need finesse, since ain't no one gunna get all the early wonders and trounce the AI early in this one. The AI just has terrain that is too good, evidently. Especially in the pre-1000AD years.

If you get in trouble, just go for Democracy, build the Statue of Liberty, and get into Communism/Fundammentalism and you'll be fine... that'll overcome happiness problems if you're not used to Emperor/Deity. LOL, I can't believe I'm actually in communism myself (without espionage, that is ).

Hi, Khan, welcome to the show. May peace come to you

Thanks for the tips. Bah I asked some wise(?) advises from the Master himself, i.e. Shadowdale. He he he. May the Force be with me.

Shadowdale has the best starts of anyone I've ever seen, judging from the GOTM 4 results (not that I've seen that many people's starts)...

But in GOTM 6, if Shadowdale can hit 3.7 million by 1 AD, or 20 million in 1,000 AD like he did in GOTM 4, I'll eat my hat, LOL!

Here I go...

This might be my last GOTM for a few months, so I'm just going to play my heart out and not look at the score until I'm finished. I think I've been crowded out of medal contention by you bean-counting perfectionists anyway.

From now on it's all about the music, man...

I think I've been crowded out of medal contention by you bean-counting perfectionists

Well, as more people join the GOTM, you have more competition now.

But if Matrix decides to listen to some very sound advice from several people, including myself, the Medal availability will increase when the punishment is removed for missing a GOTM, or playing a low-scoring strategy GOTM.

At the moment, as a new player, I cannot ever afford to play anything except a high-scoring game, or else my GR will be double raped. The first rape is ecause 70% of my score is already 0 (or close to it), and the second rape would be to have my remaining 30% be low. LOL, as a newbie, I'm not a GOTM "Good Old Boy" (all non-zero GOTMs).

But if the "Rape you for life" mentality of the GR and to a lesser extent, the HOF, were removed by (for instance) changing the GR computation to the average of the best 3 of the last 5 GOTMs, Players like me, and Shadowdale and Smash and even you, Bond, would not feel the stupid pressure to have to play an high-scoring strategy every month.

In fact, maybe it would be cool if some of us tried a having a go with, say, and OCC strategy (assuming Matrix will fix the GR!). Everyone who plays OCC will make it easier for the remaining players to have a shot at the top more often.

Be that as it may, the GR system should be fixed, and the HOF improved. This is a discussion thread, BTW:

Well Starlifter the problem is that everybody has begun with a score of ZERO, even when the first GotM was played - and that makes it impossible for anyone to ever get a GR of 100 - which I think is ok!

Besides the fact that I think the penalty for missing a game should be reduced, I think that the GR as it is is fair!

If a player get's a good game in his first try, say 70 and in the next 7 games he also scores 70 then his GR would be 66 using the current system - if we start using his first game as his "historical score" then in the same example his score would only be some 4 higher. The point is that most players will most likely get a score that isn't all that different from the previous games, and that means that their GR will more or less normalize after some 8-10 games!!

Just started to play, I didn't like the settler position so I took some steps and found a hut containing a horseman then built my first city imediatly.

Also had great luck and found an advanced tribe in the next hut.

I made contact with the vikings but didn't trade techs and didn't sign peace, attacked and destroyed them imediatly whit a horseman and a chariot from another hut.

Now I am 1 ad and have a little more than 10 cities I think, don't really know is that a good start?

Hopefully I can finish the game, I don't think I have the time since I'm going on vacation

In this game that sounds like a very good start.Normal time tables were out the door in this game. You've got 10 days........

Thanks for your welcomes

I wont be able to play anything tomorrow so I guess I'll come back in next GOTM. Well I don't know how to take screenshots on a macintosh so I can't post the powergraph until someone teach me,

And a little about myself.

I'm from sweden. I did never play civ 1 because when it was released I had no computer, However, when I was 9 years old my dad bought a comp. And when civ 2 was released he bought it just because it had got good ratings,

I tested the game once, didn't read the manual though. So I started walking around with the settler, all those tutorial messages I ignored since I couldn't understand the text, Well after a while I had a great army of 1 settler, a few horsemen and some other unit. I just walked them around and was wondering how the hell this game could be so famous. Well when I got to message:
"Dehli (India) builds united nation", I didn't play the game anymore until about a month later when I accidently pressed "b" and a city was build. The game was FUN!

Well it went on like this and I learned more and more. Still today I've not read the manual so still I don't manage trade perfectly. Because of the fact that I didn't play on any other difficultylevel than cheiftain until one year ago I'm still kinda newbie,

Well I had a really good start with these indian guys, also had the luck to destroy the vikings already in the beginning.

Almost always I finish my games by conquest, so I'm not so good at managing cities in republic or democracy. I'm also as I said erlier not very good at using freighs(ouch how to spell that?) and caravans. Could someone help me out a little on those points.

BTW I've got civ classic only.

Well, I'm going on vacation so cya l8ta!

Screenshots on a macintosh? No Problem! Hear now...the Word Of Hippo:

Hold down the 'Command/apple'key, the 'shift' key, and the number '4'. Then release them. YOur cursor will be a little x. Then, hold down the 'control' key as you click down with the x. Drag the x until you have whatever you want to post inside the square, then release the mouse (not the 'control'). You will hear a clicking noise, like a photo being taken. At this point, go to appleworks, or clarisworks, or a graphics program, go 'command+v' to paste it, shink it down, change the size of the document so you don't have too much white space around your image, then save the document as a JPEG or a GIF.

Click on the little paperclip in the posting screen and follow the instructions. Hope this is what you meant
