The Nobles' Club series started out as a way for Noble-level (and below) players to improve their game. Most of the original participants now play at much higher levels, so this has become a way for advanced players to help others learn to play better. You can play your own game at any level and with any mod, but it would be nice to comment on the games of other players and give them advice.

Our next leader is Qin Shi Huang of China, whom we last played in NC CVII, which was also the last time we played the Chinese. The Chinese start with Agriculture and Mining. Qin is INDustrious and PROtective.

IND means 50% wonder production -- wonderspam time! PRO means archers and gunpowder units start with CG I and Drill I, so you can protect yourself while wonderspamming.

His UB: the Pavilion, a Theatre that gives an extra 25%:culture:, excellent synergy with a Wonder Spamming Cultural Victory tactic.

His UU: the Cho-Ko-Nu, a souped-up crossbow with a second first strike that does collateral damage like seige engines. At Noble and similar levels drill-promoted Cho-Ko-Nus are excellent attack units and even at higher levels if you have iron and get to Machinery fast enough, they are decent on the offensive. As Qin is protective they start with CG1 so you can leave a couple behind in a city to guard it and they will be effective defenders.

And the start:

Spoiler map details :
Rainforest. This map type consists mainly of jungle, but also some fairly large spots of desert and clusters of mountain peaks. Lakes will also be present. You will also see some unusual combos - like the banana on a hill at the start.
Spoiler edits :
Changed one opponent to avoid a colour clash. Swapped the position of two resources near us and ensured each AI had metal.
Finally, a cut and paste of our standard doctrine:The WB-saves are attached (zipped; they are bigger than standard saves). To play, simply download and unzip it into your BTS/Saves/WorldBuilder folder. Start the game, and load your favorite MOD (if you use one, if not, check out the BUG MOD), select "Play Scenario", and look for "NC number Leader Noble" (or Monarch, etc., for higher levels). You can play with your favorite MOD at the Level and Speed of your choice. From Quick-Warlord to Marathon-Deity, all are welcome! We stuck with the name "Nobles Club" because it has a cool ring to it.
Spoiler what's up with specific difficulties :
In each scenario file you can select your level of difficulty, but that doesn't give the AI the right bonus techs by itself. Use the Noble save for all levels at and below Prince. The Monarch save gives all the AI Archery. Emperor adds Hunting; Immortal adds Agriculture; Deity adds The Wheel.

For players on Monarch or above, you should add archery as a tech for the barbarians (if you don't, the AI will capture their cities very early). This cannot be done in the WB save file and must be done in Worldbuilder as follows:
Spoiler how to add techs to the barbarians :

  1. Zoom in all the way so you can't see the rest of the map.
  2. Use the CTRL-W key (or the menu) to enter the worldbuilder. Avoid looking at the mini-map in the lower right corner.
  3. By default you're in "player" mode (look in the box in the upper right; the icon that looks like a person should be selected). You'll get a drop down menu labeled with your leader's name. Barbarians are at the bottom, so cover the rest of the list with your hand if you don't want to see who else is on the map. Select "Barbarians".
  4. Select the "Technologies" tab in the box on the left.
  5. Find Archery (the arrow head icon; 8th row, 3rd column from the right) and click it.
  6. Exit the worldbuilder.
  7. Zoom out again after the map fades, and start playing.
Spoiler huts and events :
Note: The standard saves have no huts and have events turned off. If you want tribal villages and random events, choose the saves with "Huts" in their names. If you want huts but no events, select the Huts saves and use Custom Scenario to turn on the option that suppresses events.

Warrior 1SE and if nothing found settle 1N for the Banana...right?

Otherwise, the start looks extremely fun, and I noticed IND-Stone synergy now. Doesn't it mean Mids n' TGW time?

Industrious and stone means quick wonders. Too bad we don´t have forest´s to chop.

I think i will try this on prince/marathon/no huts or events and aim for cultular victory.

I will give this a shot, on Monarch I guess, and hope to Cho-Ko-Nu rush some dudes.

Someone help me - I can never remember the bulb paths - we skip fishing, Oracle MC, and then need to get what prerequisites to allow scientists to bulb Machinery?

It's Qin. This will be interesting

Sounds nice, I'll give it a try. I just finished a 3 weeks game, I have yet to play Mayans' game before this one,
I think that I've never played on that kind of map.

I'll be honest, I'm a bit scared of the map script.

Spoiler :
I've never had good luck with the solid land mass maps. There's usually tons and tons of land so expect to see AI civs with 15-20 cities on higher difficulties, and i imagine the large expanse of jungle will make for plenty of barb action in the early game. The AI is pretty terrible on jungle starts though, so there is that.

Help requested this time for sure as I want to try something new- spying. I don't really use spies often or effectively [usually more as a preventative measure than an offensive one], so, even though it way too early [correct?] to decide this, I wanted to try to rely on spies this game, so

Stone and Industrious- like the idea of GW and Pyramids so I can get a Great Spy, beeline CoL and run spy specialists [hence the Pyramids for rep].

I realize it is not a game plan in itself [though the spy ---> culture victory seems interesting], but is this a decent use of the start?

Will probably play on Prince regardless as I have only played 3 Prince games [all wins thanks to the info from here] and have never played a

rainforest
map.

Well I just ran a quick test of this map script - holy crap its a lot of jungle. Like, just jungle, jungle everywhere. Jungle pigs, jungle elephants, go bananas.

I don't know... it feels like iron working is gonna be pretty important... I guess overlapping second city with cap means we can avoid it for a while, but perhaps I will go straight to alpha after priesthood, in the hope of trading for IW sooner rather than later.

Also, calendar. Not sure I can bear to wait for the Monarch AI to tech calendar for me, the quick test I ran was banana central.

Well now I regret moaning about repetitive starting locations on the NC. This start is definitely too, uh, unique, for me.

I will give this a shot, on Monarch I guess, and hope to Cho-Ko-Nu rush some dudes.

This way is risky: you may get a great prophet instead of the desired great scientist.
