Civilization 5 - Game of the Month Training Series Game 74
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\//////////////////////////////////////////

Welcome to the Seventy-fourth game in the GOTM V Training Series! There are plenty of features in Civilization 5, Gods & Kings and Brave New World to explore and the Training Series games will allow new and old GOTM fans to try out these features in a friendly environment. You are all encouraged to post your questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads described below. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread. Before going into the details of this game, we would like to ask you to abide to our most sacred rule: don’t replay any turns. If you make a mistake, accept it and try to recover. It's better to do the bad moves in the Training Series instead of in the actual GOTM competition, once it starts.

Please note: If you wish to make a video of your game, please do not post any links to it until after the game submission date has passed. This is because of the potential spoilers that are created by posting before the end date. Thank you for your cooperation.

In this game, the designated VC is Diplomatic. All VCs are enabled but results will be published by fastest Diplomatic victory turn.

In this game you will play as The Shoshone and lead the Shoshone Empire to victory. It's a standard-sized mystery map played at Emperor difficulty and at standard pace. Diplomatic is the designated VC for this game, all victory conditions are enabled. You will have until January 1st to complete the game and submit.

For those that do not wish to know the map type, please do not check the spoiler below. However, the broken software will reveal the map type if you mouse over the map icon in the load save screen.

You must have the Brave New World expansion to play this game.

Civ V BNW - TSG74 Game Settings:
Playable Civ: Pocatello - Shoshone
Number of AI Opponents: 7
Number of City-States: 16
Map type: Mystery
Spoiler :
Mousing over the map icon in the load save screen, you will see Pangaea

Map Size: Standard
Difficulty Level: Emperor
Game pace: Standard
Game options: No Game Options were selected for this game. Huts are enabled. Quick Combat and Quick Movement are disabled. (You may turn them on using the game options menu at any time during gameplay.)
Game Version: This game was created in Civ5 Brave New World version 1.0.3.144. Mongols, Brave New World and Gods and Kings are required for this game.

In this game, you will be playing as Pocatello, you possess Great Expanse. Founded cities start with additional territory. Units receive a combat bonus when fighting within their own territory.

You can train the Pathfinder, which replaced the Scout. This unit explores as well as a Scout and fights almost as well as a Warrior. It allows the player to choose the benefit when uncovering an ancient ruin. It costs more to build than a Scout. The Pathfinder is available from the start of the game and you do not need a resource to build them.

You can also train Comanche Riders, which replaces Cavalry. The Comanche Rider is less expensive to build and faster than the Cavalry it replaces. It is designed for quick attacks. You need to discover the technology of Military Science and you must have the Horse resource to build it.

This is where you will start:

Information about threads associated with TSG
TSG Announcement thread (this one). This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don’t be afraid to ask questions). It’s also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Please don’t post any information from a game you have started. Instead use the next thread.

Opening Actions thread. This thread is used to discuss the game once it's on the way. There are no reading or posting restrictions as such (apart from normal decency), although we encourage players to use the spoiler tags for screenshots. Here you can post questions related to the game and share your achievements/anger/frustration/victories while you play. During the time the game is active, please do not post any information concerning the game outside of the spoiler threads including screen shots and videos.

After Action Report thread. In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state (preferably in the post title) your victory date and score, as recorded in the Hall of Fame, and the most important: your path to glory! , We will create a separate thread with the results at the end of the two week period (sorted by date and score). Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after two weeks, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.

File Upload System
We now have a game file upload system you can find here. Please use it to upload your completed first attempt by saving the game on the turn after your victory or defeat. (by using the "lemme play one more turn" feature) Please note, you must submit your game on the turn following Victory. If you continue to play, the game overwrites the data and your submission could be rejected by the submission system.

This game runs for a month and ends Wednesday, 1 January 2014.

The Save can be found here.

Definately start by the mountains (one of them) THe banana seems to be the best, but that would basically loose the banana. (after the ganary it comes back with 1 food)

Not so sure about that. It's a mountain range, and therefore a lot of tiles we can't use.

True, but not settling next to a mountain means no Observatory later? Am tempted to settle on bananas myself, or maybe the jungle hill. I think I will scout to the SW and go from there.

I'll move the pathfinder to the hill across the river then decide if I want to settle on that hill to have both banana in the capital or on the mountainside hill to have the observatory. The 3 tiles in the fog next to the northern mountain look like they are probably mountains as well making it 6 unworkable tiles if I settle in place or next to the mountains. However, that shouldn't be a problem until the capital is at 34+ population.

I am not sure if this banana tile is a hill. I prefer to settle on hill, in particular with the Shoshones as Pathfinder costs more hammers than regular Scout. A hill west to settler is perfect for defence, however we can loose a lot of usable tiles. Probably I move Scout to the south east hill and deicide if it is not worth to settle on that hill.

I wonder if one of closest neighbour would be Shaka, as it was in many resent games (Portugal, Venice, Indonesia). I have the feeling I find Zulus to be my neighbours more often than other civs (well it could be only feeling or just a luck).

Oh great Sun God, give me one more banana and I will pray to you!

PS: If you pick mystery, what happens to the map settings (world age, temperature, rainfall, sea level, Resources)?
I can't imagine that resources are randomized too.

Picking a mystery map, the software picks a map type and then applies all the standard (default) settings to it. Does not seem to do anything out of the ordinary.

We do test play the maps... :mischief:

Thinking about settling on the banana. You'd still get benefit of granary, right? And banana god belief if you took it?
If so, cap would have 4 base food.
You'd lose the opportunity of plantation and you'd lose 2 science with uni.

I NEVER KNEW ABOUT THIS THREAD!!!
DV huh? emperor? this will be like taking candy from a baby... I'm in!

Hmm, Diplomatic Victory eh? Does anyone know if you get the Liberation votes if you sell someone's capital and then retake it?

You cannot liberate something that you've taken by force. (same with CS) I'm not sure but I tried this in GnK.
It's ok if you got it in a peace deal the first time however.

Lovely strat.

I think it works. Not sure, but remember a game when I sell a city after conquest and need to take it again. It seems I had the choice to liberate the city.

Just getting around to playing this one now, but since it looks like no one officially answered the question, here is how I believe it works:

You cannot liberate a city you just sold to someone else. However, you can puppet it again and immediately sell it again, assuming the old buyer still wants it. You can liberate a CS multiple times though and I believe it keeps giving you the negative warmonger bonus each time you do it.

This is based on my experience in a recent game where Shaka had control of an entire medium sized island where some of the cities he had captured from a dead civ and others were former city states. I had a big navy but no ground units, so I kept liberating a city state only to have him immediately overrun it with units and take it back in a turn or two. Then I'd capture it again, rinse, and repeat. It probably flipped back and forth 5 times within 20 turns (I needed the coal the CS had access to).

I also tried taking one of his original cities and immediately selling it to another one of his enemies, but the same thing was happening. He would just take it back because I couldn't keep up with his unit spam, even though he couldn't really hurt me since I was in the water. I believe on recapture there was no liberate option. I had to puppet and sell it again. I wasn't getting much out of the sale since the city stank, but I didn't want the city anyway and I thought maybe it would let the other AI get a foothold on his island (was trying to get these 2 knuckleheads to fight each other and leave me alone). Alas the AI didn't do anything useful with it and I couldn't keep pace with Shaka's unit spam. Eventually I got tired of the routine and accepted peace when he was finally willing to give me some goodies.
