Hey guys. It's been awhile and there's seem to be somewhat of a drought of Stories since BNW came out, and I still feel bad about my failed Mongol Story...so I decided I'd give you all one of my best stories from a civ game I had awhile back. Note this will be only one post, and I never took any pictures so, sorry :(.
The Austrian Throne
The Austrian Duchy had been in shambles for a long, long time. They had but 4 cities. One of which, Tyre, was a city-state that had been integrated into the Grand Duchy after the princess had married His Excellency's son, who then claimed their throne. The terrain was...tolerable with plains to the east along a river, and grasslands to the west near Tyre, and hills here and there, but a good amount near Duchy's capital. They were trapped on a smallish continent with 2 other civilizations, the Danish Empire, there only friend, and the Polynesian Maritime Empire, who sprawled across the world and was regarded as the one true Military Superpower. Anyhow, the Austrian science team was a laughingstock amongst the world. They were a backwards nation hardly in the Industrial Era when most were in or nearing the Modern Era. The Austrian culture was almost unidentifiable. The only strong ties it had was to its Traditions and to Commerce and prosperity. They did not even have guilds where its Writers, or Artists, or Musicians could debate, discuss, or confer among each other. The only thing they had going for them was their economy, which had a great GDP, and an already large treasury. But His Excellency had a plan for rapid industrialization.
The Austrian Era of Industry
The very minute His Excellency was given blueprints from a renowned Engineer of a "factory"(fun fact that Engineer later went on to create a large manufactory plant of one of the four hills of Vienna, which would later come to be one of the greatest sources of Production in the country) he ordered all cities within the realm to immediately begin production of these.
Also within his plans was the collectivization of agriculture. His Excellency realized that inter-city commerce created much wealth, and that by sending caravans filled with food within the realm could allow for larger population, and with more people to trade within the Empire it would allow far more gold then trading with Danes. Since more food would be sent to all cities, the farms around most cities were either destroyed(but the owners were compensated), or de-sized in favor of trading posts and mines.
He also ordered that all income was to be stored and any luxury or strategic resources were to be sold.
The Ideological Demand
The factory workers within the realm started acting...strange. They were demanding a form of rules and many outbursts were surfacing.
Some demanded "Freedom" within the factory, and Duchy in general, where people could express their interests and express themselves independently, and take control of their own destiny.
Others wanted for "Order" where workers(though some opted to call each others comrades) would all be equally compensated, and there would be strict rules and punishments for breaking them.
But by far the most wanted "Autocracy", with a Dictator in charge whose words were laws.
His Excellency heard their cries, and abolished the silly Duchy system, and adopted Autocracy. The peoples of his realm was so excited that they celebrated in the streets and they demanded their culture be heard! Industrial Espionage became a recognizable trait of the Austrians(note this was free, but the Polynesians already had Autocracy so I only got one free policy).
The Austrian Regime Come to Relevancy
The phenomena of Industrial Espionage led to the discovery of many, many technologies, and the His Excellency knew that his earlier policies would soon be coming into full effect.
The day finally arrived. His peoples learned of radar. Immediately, he ordered the creation of an Air Force. Made of three branches: The Bombers, The Fighters, and The Paratroopers. These were split into: Land Bombers and City Bombers. The Dogfighters, The Interceptors, and The Sweepers. The Pillagers, The Combatants, and Siege Troops.
The Air Force was primarily funded directly by the treasury, though a few troops and planes were produced by factories. Upon hearing the tales of the Austrian Air Force(AAF), the world was coming to a slow realization that Austria was becoming a relevant nation in the modern world.
The First Treachery
Austria looked at their longtime ally Denmark. Their military was relatively small, and they were an enemy of Polynesia, who lately had been on good terms with Austria since they were the only to nations to establish Autocracy. With this in mind, the benevolent Dictator of Austria, without a second thought declared war on the Danes, who had long been their only friend. The only Casus Beli he claimed was the Acquisition of Territory.
The Austrian Invasion of Denmark was a quick, efficient war. The initial attack has been come to be known as "The Danish Eclipse".

An Exert From a Danish Soldier's Account of the Danish Eclipse

"I was stationed deep in our territory near Copenhagen. We all thought we were safe. Early in the morning, all that changed. We heard the distant roaring of engines, quiet at first but steadily grew louder by the second. Suddenly we heard the alarm blare, the signal to get to our stations. Now, being green at the time my job was just to get armed and be on the backup line. I ran to my trench, and by now I could see what the roaring was emanating from. Thousands of plane. And when I say thousands, I mean thousands. And no quicker did I see them, then did I see the bombs, and the men. The bombs hurtled in but behind them all I could see was shade. Shade from the thousands upon thousands of parachutes. So much shade was it that I could not even see the sun, the only brightness that came was bombs killing my friends."

The war was over before it even began after a mere 2 months the entire country was annexed, marking one of the fastest acquisition of territory in all of history.
The Polynesian Front
Though this display of military might was...impressive to say the least, the Polynesians, and the world for that matter, did not take it so. They hated His Excellency for it. Oh but His Excellency loved it, reveled in their hatred, for he knew behind that hatred, lay fear.
Before the Polynesians could react, the Air Flew in once more, though this war would not be so simple, His Excellency knew. But he had a secret weapon. His best researchers were on the case of 2 big projects. The "Atom Theory" and the "XCOM Project". Both of which he kept extremely secret. But thankfully the world would not have to know of these in the Polynesian war. For through hard fought blood and tears, the war was won for Honolulu and its surrounding cities on what was now the Austrian continent was now was taken, and peace was made, though the Polynesian had to pay gold, and tribute for the next couple of years.
World War
For years no one dared to do anything about the Austrian threat, and besides they were busy with their primitive and silly skirmishes. But come 2000, the Austrians would fix that. Both projects had been completed in full. Their outdated Paratroopers, Bombers, and Fighters, had all been upgraded and fitted into XCOM Squads, Stealth Bombers, and Jet Fighters. Their ultimate weapon had also been perfected: The Nuclear Missile.
In 2000 the Austrian Empire launched "Operation Silent Night" for the world had beaten down the Austrians long enough, it was time for revenge.
Off the coast of every country, simultaneously nuclear subs launched nuclear missiles, even as they were bombed by planes they could not see, and as troops with unimaginable weaponry flew after them with jet packs and plasma launchers.
Austria against the World. They world stood no chance, and in 2010 The Earth was scorched, and Austria ruled all, but His people did not resent His Excellency. No, no His people revered His Excellency as a Saint, and Savior of the Austrian People.

You conquered the entire rest of the world in ten years?

Anyway, great story. I'm hoping to do another one after I finish my next BNW game.

Edit: Btw, what exactly does Industrial Espionage do(I haven't seen the tenets for Autocracy)?

^^
Thank you, and I will definitely be following your new story, yours are always good. And Industrial Espionage makes tech stealing twice as fast, the main reason why Autocracy is amazing

Nice story!
This is actually a very similar idea to one I had for a story. I played one game with that strategy (Commerce, Big Ben, Autocracy, buy massive amounts of Xcoms and nukes and kill all the capitals at the same time. It was REALLY fun.)

Thank you :D and yeah Big Ben + Commerce + Elite Soldiers(or whatever the discount is) = Victory :p
Also is there anyway to improve my writing? Always looking for new ways. :)

Heh, nice job! :) Flying units are so strong, especially considering the computers don't really use them well at all.

As for the writing, I'd just make sure to read over what you wrote, possibly out loud, and make sure all of your sentences flow smoothly. It's mostly pretty good, but I found a few pretty easily correctable errors in there that made the flow a little bumpy at times. Secondly, I'd suggest adding a line of white space in between each of your headers. Just would make it a bit easier to read, since right now it kind of merges all together. Also, try to avoid starting sentences with "But" or "Also". Basically any transition word should not begin a sentence.

Sometimes I think you could divide up one sentence in to two sentences to make things flow better. This is a common problem I have with my writing too, but be on the lookout for that.

This was still a fun post to read though. The best part was the Danish soldier's account from the day of the Danish Eclipse. :D You did a nice job of being creative and coming up with engaging storylines the entire way through.

I'm looking forward to reading your part on my game! :)

^^
Thank you for the compliments and the tips :) Yeah the Danish Eclipse part was the inspiration for the story. I love to write but I'm not too great at formatting and grammar, so thanks a lot
