Greetings, Immortals and would-be Immortals (and indeed any other players of any level), and welcome to the Immortal University.

Here is our Leader:

Here's the opening scene:

The following settings were used to create this map:

And the Demographics for people to spot any info they can:

Before we start, here's the copy & paste bit where I get to pretend that I'm TMIT:

To play, just extract the WB save file into your worldbuilder saves directory, then play it. Use custom scenario if you want some extra settings to tickle your fancy. This series was designed for people learning immortal, so most people here will be at that level or trying to attain it, although deity players are welcome also. Hell, if you want to play this on NOBLE. The intention of this and any other game thread I post is to get better. Play whatever level you need in order to improve.

If you are aspiring IMM+, try to remember to add archery back to the barbs in WB. Every time you don't, a deity AI will kill a kitten, although there are a lot of kittens so it's not the end of the world if you prefer easy mode barbs.

I do request people to list their difficulty and speed. In terms of updates, well nobody follows that anyway. Post in the manner you feel comfortable. Typical comparison dates are 1 AD, liberalism, and victory/defeat, as well as any major events. If in doubt, go with that.

We also have an initial Immortal/Normal autosave which is much more convenient since you can avoid all the worldbuilder shenanigans. It comes with my personal seal of approval (not least as my worldbuilder edits may contain hideous game-destroying errors that could cause your computer to explode).

Map type is Fractal. No additional edits made.

Immortal University uses the same method in creating games as Nobles' Club, so here are the Nobles' Club guidelines on how to add techs to the barbs:
Spoiler :

Spoiler for how to add techs to the barbarians:
  1. Zoom in all the way so you can't see the rest of the map.
  2. Use the CTRL-W key (or the menu) to enter the worldbuilder. Avoid looking at the mini-map in the lower right corner.
  3. By default you're in "player" mode (look in the box in the upper right; the icon that looks like a person should be selected). You'll get a drop down menu labeled with your leader's name. Barbarians are at the bottom, so cover the rest of the list with your hand if you don't want to see who else is on the map. Select "Barbarians".
  4. Select the "Technologies" tab in the box on the left.
  5. Find Archery (the arrow head icon; 8th row, 3rd column from the right) and click it.
  6. Exit the worldbuilder.
  7. Zoom out again after the map fades, and start playing.

When posting, please keep any map & AI revealing details in spoilers.

Good luck and have fun!

Looks very interesting. At first glance I'd be inclined to settle on the PH wine 2E, for +1:hammers: +1:commerce:.

Well i don't think i would settle on T0 here. 2E has some potential, i think that will give a 2-2-2 city tile. If not 2E than maybe a little further to the N or E if we can retain the corn, but gain more river tiles.

I would probably move the warrior 1NW to make sure moving east won't lose anything fantastic then move the settler 1NE before deciding where to go from there.

Could be an interesting game. I learned long ago to never trust map makers on these series.

UU Random Facts (not really spoiler):

Spoiler :

Do you know that a whole stack of MarinesNavy Seals can heal after moving or attacking at the same turn when accompanied by a super medic (30%-45% healing also applies). Awesome!

Yup this is a typical American map for me. Play the map not the game you want to play.

Good point. pandamancer, can you say anything about how strongly this map is modified? Also, can you tell us which underlying map script was used?

Yes, I do think it is fractal and that is what pops out in the random generation. To be exact it is:

  • Fractal
  • Standard
  • Temperate
  • Medium Sea Level

I do think it is just coincidence to be like that :)

I am still playing. Give the map a go.

Looking good! Definitely not SiP situation, PH wine looks like the way to go. Remember to enable tile yields for starting screen, everything else spot on! :goodjob:

Yeah I made a few too many mistakes on this map. Wasn't focused enough. See how others do. Choosing the right techs is important this game.

oh..this is just a

Spoiler :
semi-iso lovefest isn't it

trying this on immortal for the 2nd time ever, about early game

Spoiler :
I settled on the PH and rushed pottery, having trouble placing my 2nd city. The best spot is the FP to the north, but since Ragnar came from the south, the corn or pigs to the east are viable too. There's also 1S of the PH wine to the west that gets the pigs and lots of hills and shares the FPs with the capital.

Well here is my story.

Spoiler :

I think I picked a poor location for my capital as I never quite got a cottage capital going and this really messed up my economy.

Yeah the neighbour is not too friendly but is quite manageble. I had a few barb issues early on but I thought I managed this well. Perhaps I could of used some axe/swords sooner.

Tech wise. Yeah I kind of dithered here. When you lack a strong commerce base you can't afford to tech every tech. You need to know which techs are key for isolated starts/ this map. Expect no help from the other AI.

My economy crashed early on due to little or no commerce, having to fight off my neighbour, barbs and not getting my early techs right.

I am sure I could of easily got liberalism first just I felt my economy was in terrible shape to make it worth playing on. I did manage to bulb through 8-9 GS. Plus I made a few other mistakes. I was lacking focus.

I may try a more focused attempt tomorrow. I had been staring at screen far too long today.

Imm/normal Looking for help with my game

Spoiler :
Ragnar declared on me early, I managed to fend him and barbs off with mass archer/spearmen. I then teched HBR seeing as he probably wouldn't trade with me, we're both behind on techs and there aren't many good resources for backfilling the land. I killed Ragnar off with HAs in 325AD, found Izzy next to me on another continent. About to trade off my currency and HBR for techs but not sure if I should keep currency a bit longer. Plan now should be to expand and tech compass for harbors? Ragnar's capital had GLH. Is my game winnable at this point? Should I not have kept every Viking city I conquered?

update

Spoiler :

currently at 725AD, I know I'm not gonna win lib, so should I ignore trade for machinery instead and beeline astronomy? Then maybe start an intercontinental war with navy seals?

Turn 34

Spoiler :
I have only met Ragnar. I moved my guy NW and decided to SIP when I saw the Pigs. Went Animal Husbandry 1st, then Bronze Working. I think I have to kill Ragnar, and I'll do it with Horse Archers.

Imm/normal Looking for help with my game

Spoiler :

Looking at your game generally. Your expansion is too slow. Corn/pigs above your second city is a great place to settle. Wheat/pigs too above your capital.

You have the great light house but you have not spammed coastal cities?

You are philosophical. A golden age and caste should answer all your problems. By 880ad I had Phil/CS/paper/edu and was pretty much ready for lib too. I was a turn off MC and lacked compass. I had 8 great people by that point. I lacked NE. I bulbed paper and edu using 3 GS.

Taking out Rags is a tough decision this game. His land is hardly great. Plus you need the units to do it. You only kept one city. It's a lot of unit hammer for one city.
