Civilization 5 - Game of the Month Training Series Game 78
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\//////////////////////////////////////////

Welcome to the Seventy-eighth game in the GOTM V Training Series! There are plenty of features in Civilization 5 Brave New World to explore and the Training Series games will allow new and old GOTM fans to try out these features in a friendly environment. You are all encouraged to post your questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads described below. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread. Before going into the details of this game, we would like to ask you to abide to our most sacred rule: don’t replay any turns. If you make a mistake, accept it and try to recover. It's better to do the bad moves in the Training Series instead of in the actual GOTM competition, once it starts.

In this game, the designated VC is Domination. All VCs are enabled but results will be published by fastest Domination victory turn.

In this game you will play as Japan and lead the Japanese Empire to victory. (They received new changes in BNW so please read their civilization details below to update yourself on them.) It's a standard-sized mystery map played at Prince difficulty and at standard pace. Domination is the designated VC for this game, all victory conditions are enabled. You will have until February 15th to complete the game and submit.

Civ V BNW - TSG78 Game Settings:
Playable Civ: - Oda Nobunaga - Japan
Number of AI Opponents: 7
Number of City-States: 16
Map type: Mystery

Spoiler :
Map type: Small Continents

Map Size: Standard
Difficulty Level: Prince
Game pace: Standard
Game options: Quick Combat is enabled. (You may turn it off using the game options menu at any time during gameplay.)
Game Version: This game was created in Civ5 Brave New World version 1.0.3.144. NO DLC are required for this game but the Gods and Kings expansion is required.

In this game, you will be playing as Japan, you possess Bushido. Units fight as though they were at full strength even when damaged. +1 culture Culture from each Fishing Boat and +2 culture Culture from each Atoll.

You can train the Samurai. This Medieval era unit fights more effectively and helps produce Great Generals more quickly than the Longswordsman, which it replaces. Embarked Samurai can build Fishing Boats in one turn without being consumed (which makes them useful even in times of peace).

You can also build the Zero, an air unit that replaces the Fighter designed to wrest control of the skies and intercept incoming enemy aircraft. Only the Japanese may build it. This Unit has a bonus against other Fighters and does not require Oil.

This is where you will start:

Information about threads associated with TSG
TSG Announcement thread (this one). This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don’t be afraid to ask questions). It’s also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Please don’t post any information from a game you have started. Instead use the next thread.

Opening Actions thread. This thread is used to discuss the game once it's on the way. There are no reading or posting restrictions as such (apart from normal decency), although we encourage players to use the spoiler tags for screenshots. Here you can post questions related to the game and share your achievements/anger/frustration/victories while you play. During the time the game is active, please do not post any information concerning the game outside of the spoiler threads including screen shots and videos.

After Action Report thread. In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state (preferably in the post title) your victory date and score, as recorded in the Hall of Fame, and the most important: your path to glory! We will create a separate thread with the results at the end of the two week period (sorted by date and score). Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after two weeks, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.

File Upload System
We now have a game file upload system you can find here. Please use it to upload your completed first attempt by saving the game on the turn after your victory or defeat. (by using the "lemme play one more turn" feature) Please note, you must submit your game on the turn following Victory. If you continue to play, the game overwrites the data and your submission could be rejected by the submission system.

This game runs for a month and ends Saturday, 15 February 2014.

The Save can be found here.

Hi all, this will be my first GOTM (might even be my first post) so I'm looking forward to the challenge and how I do compared to the Deities who routinely play here.

I will now embarrass myself by stealing first post and poluting it with my inane "strategic" babble...

First impressions are that this isn't quite what i initially expected from the map, i.e. fish and fish. Instead it looks like a strong production start (salt, hills) and with Marble giving a bonus to early wonders. Which, at this difficulty, is quite tantalising as it will be very possible to build some early wonders.

Domination and early wonders would normaly be mutualy exclusive, especially on a different map type (pangaea) or difficulty, but small continents could well enforce a delay in the warmongering, if only through extended logistics and requiring embarcation. Which might in turn better reward a delayed start to the inevitable hostilites and hence an earlier focus on building a tall core for the future empire.

Depending on how big the starting continent turns out to be (and number of civs on it), the above combines to make me more inclined to go for a Tradition start - if it's just Japan and one other civ. If this turns out to be a big-ish continent (with more than one other civ), then I'd be more inclined to go with liberty for the early expansion. I'd eventually still want the later bonii to connected cities from liberty too.

One thing is for sure: I won't be able to neglect the naval/shipping techs for long, especially if the continent really is small and embarcation is needed for early settlement.

Militarily, the map type may allow for more selective invasions: amphibious surgical strikes on civ capitals. Then again, it may not be possible to avoid taking other cities if they block access/connection.

So, in summary: If the starting continent turns out large enough to hold 2 or more other civs, I'll go liberty and initially (until neighbouring civs are down) stick to a conventional pangaea type land-only steamrolling strategy. If on the other hand the starting continent is small and shared only with 1 other civ, I'll look to go tradition and tall until the NC is built (circa t100), then bulldoze my neighbour and look to find the other overseas prey, with XBs and Samurai. Going the tradition route will require a concentrated burst of warmongering later on, while liberty would entail more constant war - tortoise and the hare!

salt start (eyes start to glaze)
prince nonetheless...

(I have zero experience with domination though  I think I might go OCC)

Welcome to CFC and the TSG series! Have fun and let us know how it goes.

How do you control if people aren't cheating with the scholar of residents exploit?

We are currently working on detecting the overflow trick but this is a Domination goal on a Prince difficulty map. The game will have been won well before Printing Press or Scholars for at least the top 10 results.

In honor of this Japan game, i'll post this link that a friend of mine just sent me. Truly, theirs is a culture that is just ... mystifying.

edit: fair warning, the subject manner might be taboo to some but also might be a little unsafe for kids viewing. it isnt gross but it is artistically funny, imo.

This looks interesting, especially as I haven't finished a game as Japan... Ever, or played them since Civ IV. Domination is always fun, too! So let's do this!
