Goodbye Paris, good morning London
Greetings, Immortals and would-be Immortals (and indeed any other players of any level), and welcome to the Immortal University.

Here is our Leader:

Here's the opening scene:

And the Demographics for people to spot any info they can:

Before we start, here's the copy & paste bit of the IU motto:

To play, just extract the WB save file into your worldbuilder saves directory, then play it. Use custom scenario if you want some extra settings to tickle your fancy. This series was designed for people learning immortal, so most people here will be at that level or trying to attain it, although deity players are welcome also. Hell, if you want to play this on NOBLE. The intention of this and any other IU game thread is to get better. Play whatever level you need in order to improve.

If you are aspiring IMM+, try to remember to add archery back to the barbs in WB. Every time you don't, a deity AI will kill a kitten, although there are a lot of kittens so it's not the end of the world if you prefer easymode barbs. If you don't know how, here are the guidelines copyrighted from the Noble's Club:
Spoiler how to add techs to the barbarians :

  1. Zoom in all the way so you can't see the rest of the map.
  2. Use the CTRL-W key (or the menu) to enter the worldbuilder. Avoid looking at the mini-map in the lower right corner.
  3. By default you're in "player" mode (look in the box in the upper right; the icon that looks like a person should be selected). You'll get a drop down menu labeled with your leader's name. Barbarians are at the bottom, so cover the rest of the list with your hand if you don't want to see who else is on the map. Select "Barbarians".
  4. Select the "Technologies" tab in the box on the left.
  5. Find Archery (the arrow head icon; 8th row, 3rd column from the right) and click it.
  6. Exit the worldbuilder.
  7. Zoom out again after the map fades, and start playing.
I do request people to list their difficulty and speed. In terms of updates, well nobody follows that anyway. Post in the manner you feel comfortable. Typical comparison dates are 1 AD, liberalism, and victory/defeat, as well as any major events. If in doubt, go with that.

We also have an initial Immortal/Normal autosave which is much more convenient since you can avoid all the worldbuilder shenanigans. It comes with my personal seal of approval (not least as my worldbuilder edits may contain hideous game-destroying errors that could cause your computer to explode).

Why would you do this to us.:eek::eek:

Will load/try save tomorrow. Still deciding over wine or a hammer hill. Do I spot flood plains to west?? Where to move warrior. hmmmm.

SIP and AH for me unless there's a big surprise moving the warrior (on the hill). Then perhaps POT-Writing. I like that by SIP we don't need Mining and still get decent production.
Two 6-yield tiles should make for a pretty fast settler, even without early mining/BW. Then settle somewhere with good commerce and perhaps move the capital later, I suppose.

Thinking same thing. If you settle in place commerce looks dim. Normally I'm extremely excited about PH starts but I'm probably gonna settle on the wine and tech AH > Min > Mas (I've played a few turns) > and decide from there.

To 1 AD:

Spoiler :

SIP, AH-POT-Mining-BW. Settled city 2 SW of northern pigs to block Monty. His 2nd went elsewhere, so for quite a while we only shared a 3 tile border - not enough for becoming a land target.
Pacal founded Buddhism and spread it like crazy. Saladin is Hindu, Hannibal got confused, everybody else including myself are Buddhist.

Didn't get hit by Monty; early on he wasn't that strong, and later he hated Saladin more for being Hindu. The two have been at war for a while, with little progress on either side.

Due to taking the northern pigs first and then settling in between for trade connection and more FPs, a barb city spawned in the west. I had a spawnbuster, but he got eaten by an archer. I finally took it with chariots in 600 BC or so, using whip overflow to get NE there now.

Paris built GLib and Parthenon with very little chopping. Capital was moved to Orleans (northern pigs) recently, which has tons of commerce and an academy. Should become a nice bureau monster. Won Music too. Unfortunately Paris popped a GA at 8% odds for second GP, so I have two of them now.
Tech situation is good, I'm more or less on par with Hannibal and Pacal although we all have different techs. Still a monopoly on Music, and some don't even have Aesth. Leading in GNP by some margin (215 to next at 173), 154 :science: at 100%.

FDR7rId.jpg

Building/whipping wellies and cats now to hit Monty in the back. He's fairly weak, backwards, and tied up fighting Saladin. He's got iron too, so the plan is to take that and a few cities, tech up to cuirs, and take out someone else with cuirs and fast muskets.

To 800AD (T 150):

Spoiler :

Decided to hit Pacal instead with Elepult. Took 3 cities, among them Mutal with Stonehenge (nice with CHA) and a 33gpt Buddhist shrine, then capitulated him. He's down to 2 cities but somehow still teching decently.

Just finished Gunpowder (via Edu), still have a monopoly on Paper so Lib is safe. 6th university is coming in next round, then Oxford. Orleans SW of pigs (moved capital) is quite nice, 176 :science: before Oxford.
Paris now has HE and is focused on production only. The western city has NE and a ton of farms.

Strong tech lead, almost twice the GNP of whoever is second best (Hannibal?), 377 :science: per turn at 100%, losing 79 gold.

Next up will be Monty with muskets and the 20 or so leftover wellies and cats. Then upgrade to cuirs and vassalize the rest.

Immortal/Standard til 1AD
Spoiler :
Settled on wine and teched towards Masonry and onto Priesthood. Stole a worker from Pacal while building first TGW, followed by SH, and then pumping out 2 settlers, and then finished Oracle in 1560 (Alpha).

Next I grabbed The Mids (switched to Slavery/PS) while picking up HBR and finishing math in 900s. Had 4 workers already prechopped everything and used 3 cities to whip/chop 18 HAs very quick. I went on a two prong attack declaring war on Monty, immediately followed by Pacal. I split my HAs up 9/9.

Next I headed up to Currency > CoL while I traded my way to Aesthetics (and grabbed HG during the process) and then grabbed Lit (TGL), followed by Music and MC will finish soon. Anyways, a basic HA stomp. I read Thars post above........and he mentioned Monty was weak early on. That was definitely the case in my game too. his 2 closest cities had 2 and 3 units while his Capital had 3. By the time I got to his last 2 cities he had 4 units, and then 2. I only lost 2 or 3 HAs during that whole war.

Napoleon is an awesome leader, but because it's Immortal University, I will not dear to try Emperor. Monarch/Normal/NHNE will be the way to go.

SiP looks to be the best option here because there're 2 food resources in the 1st ring and by doing so there would be an extra :hammers:. In order to work the food, AH is needed. But what worries me is the amount of forest which would render my Worker idle until BW which is pretty far away tech.

Map details:

Spoiler :
Fractal, 2 AIs were specially selected by hand

1 edit made (careful, info spoiler):
Spoiler :
Changed Iron to the South to Marble, to strip the player of all metal

Spoiler :

Got the Copper to the Northwest. Monty seems to expand slowly. Archery/Horseback Riding can be researched easily with all the commerce here in case Monty decided to attack so I don't think the metal is really needed anyway.

up to 450ad.

Spoiler :

Settled on wine and I was wow!! We have stone!! Built GW/SH/Oracle and took COL. Use GP for theology. Eventually got a second GP for golden age. GS bulb edu. Teched towards gunpowder.

Just taken down three of Maya's cities including his cap with Glib and parth. He has music and philosophy. He is well advanced.

Oh built mids in capital because i could.

Streams of mussket are now flowing into Mayan land. He has LB but they seem pretty useless vs muskets. Aztecs are at war with Zula after I bribed Shaka to attack him. Been a pretty easy defensive game really.

Carthage is the big threat with 12 cities. Will take out 2-3 more Mayan cities then maybe take on Aztecs who appear to be dying thanks to Shaka.

cseanny, that's incredible! I also felt it was a fairly easy game for Immortal, but you're making it look like Prince at best!

Immortal/Normal to 1 AD
Spoiler :

Settled in place and went for Mining>AH>Pottery>Myst>BW I believe... Saw all sorts of rivers/flood plains for early commerce.

Civ4ScreenShot0122-3.jpg

Got some quick cities to claim land. AI seems to be expanding slowly. Building cottages everywhere while getting Pyramids.

Civ4ScreenShot0123-1.jpg

900 BC Pyramids built
425 BC Parthenon
225 BC Great Library

Got Artist at very low odds (Parthenon) so teched Drama to bulb Music to get another Artist. Used this one for early golden age while building Elepult army.

1 AD: Will get Civil Service just in time to swap civics during GA.

@ Thrar

Thanks but its not me! Its HA imbalance ^^. Here's a few combat screenies of HAs vs AI cities and as you can see I only lose 1 unit vs 7 AI units. And Pacal's Capital had 60% culture defense too. Took a look at my save and I made 19 HA and only lost 8 in a two pronged war. That's pretty good.

Where were Pacal's Holkans?? What a nut!

I know right!! LoL. Here's a funny screen shot of how many Holkens I actually killed. I know for a fact he had 2 more roaming around with a settler right before I killed him off but that didn't help him much.

The availability of Stone and Marble was an invitation for a wonder-spam. Built almost every wonder I could in the early part of the game. To illustrate this:
Spoiler Paris :
Civ4ScreenShot0516_zps9a83119c.jpg
...and then there was also Stonehenge, Great Wall, The Oracle, The Great Library, the Parthenon and so on. My military power went into neglect because of the wonder-building spree of course and so, I got attacked by Shaka and Monty. With the help of War Elephants and Catapults I managed to defend.

There was a huge problem - no Iron. I couldn't build Cuirs without that. So I had to wait until Rifling before making any move. I got Iron after wiping out Monty with my Cavalry and then switched from Cavalry-only tactics to Rifle/Cannon.

Although the plan was to wipe out Hannibal, I had to vassalize him. Because he had left the continent and I had no way to pursue him without Optics/Astronomy. After dealing with Hannibal, I quickly vassalized Pacal, Saladin and Shaka and the game was over.
