Civilization 5 - Game of the Month Training Series Game 81
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\//////////////////////////////////////////

Welcome to the Eighty-first game in the GOTM V Training Series! There are plenty of features in Civilization 5 Brave New World to explore and the Training Series games will allow new and old GOTM fans to try out these features in a friendly environment. You are all encouraged to post your questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads described below. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread. Before going into the details of this game, we would like to ask you to abide to our most sacred rule: don’t replay any turns. If you make a mistake, accept it and try to recover. It's better to do the bad moves in the Training Series instead of in the actual GOTM competition, once it starts.

Please note: If you wish to make a video of your game, please do not post any links to it until after the game submission date has passed. This is because of the potential spoilers that are created by posting before the end date. Thank you for your cooperation.

In this game, the designated VC is Domination. All VCs are enabled but results will be published by fastest Domination victory turn.

In this game you will play as Songhai and lead the Songhai Empire to victory. It's a standard-sized mystery map played at Emperor difficulty and at standard pace. Domination is the designated VC for this game, all victory conditions are enabled. You will have until April 1st to complete the game and submit.

You can also build the Mud Pyramid Mosque, a unique building that replaces the Temple. In addition to faith it produces 2 culture and requires no gold maintenance.

This is where you will start:

Information about threads associated with TSG
TSG Announcement thread (this one). This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don’t be afraid to ask questions). It’s also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Please don’t post any information from a game you have started. Instead use the next thread.

Opening Actions thread. This thread is used to discuss the game once it's on the way. There are no reading or posting restrictions as such (apart from normal decency), although we encourage players to use the spoiler tags for screenshots. Here you can post questions related to the game and share your achievements/anger/frustration/victories while you play. During the time the game is active, please do not post any information concerning the game outside of the spoiler threads including screen shots, videos, or recorded/live-cast Let's Plays on other websites.

After Actions thread. In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state (preferably in the post title) your victory date and score, as recorded in the Hall of Fame, and the most important: your path to glory! We will create a separate thread with the results at the end of the one month submission period (sorted by date and score). Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after one month, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.

File Upload System
We now have a game file upload system you can find here. Please use it to upload your completed first attempt by saving the game on the turn after your victory or defeat. (by using the "lemme play one more turn" feature) Please note, you must submit your game on the turn following Victory. If you continue to play, the game overwrites the data and your submission could be rejected by the submission system.

This game runs for a month and ends Tuesday, 1 April 2014.

The Save can be found here.

would like to settle on a hill to get some units out early doors.
not too bothered about mountain as probably wont get as far as astronomy.
considering on the sheep after having a peek to the left with warrior.

general strategy, i'm wondering about chariot archers with the view of upgrading to UU at chiv. will lose the promotions, but will mean I don't have to go construction. not sure how good an idea that is.

As with every TSG, all Victory Conditions are enabled unless stated that they are not. We set a preferred victory, you are always free to choose whatever VC you wish to play for.

Thanks for the game! I see lots of resources visible at the start.

I would be interested to hear what people are planning for tech and religion.

From the announcement:
In this game, the designated VC is Domination. All VCs are enabled but results will be published by fastest Domination victory turn.
If you play for another VC besides Domination, then you cannot "win" this competition.

However, players play for many reasons and the results are also posted by score. So it depends upon your objective for playing.

Our goal is to provide people an experience to learn as well as to compare games. This is why there is a designated VC, so most people are playing the same game. When any VC is enabled, the games are a lot less comparable.

The option does exist for those who wish to play more for fun.

Thanks for the clarification!

i highly doubt that the optimal path to win contains building something else as units, maybe not even a monument.

Thanks for the clear strategic tip! But doesn't this approach mean that there will be a risk of having too many units, and getting production penalties because of that? Or should newly conquered puppet cities make up for that?

Newly conquered puppetted capitals will overcome the production deficit of a low pop capital. Regardless, a 10-20% production penalty on a 5 turn archer won't really be a big deal.

It is something to seriously consider. Thank you for sharing the thought. Chariots and Mandekalus are better at hit-and-run attacks and moving quickly across the map, so there is an advantage there too. The poor Great Generals won't be able to keep up...

Of course horses are needed. City states usually give plenty later on but it would be nice to have some close to the capital. So research Animal Husbandry first?

I will never be able to play Civ this way, this way is not...beautiful

I think it will be hard for me too, but I am willing to give it a try. New experiences are something worthwile by themselves, aren't they? But I think I will need a very different mindset first. Not building buildings seems like self mutilation now. I need to get used to the idea of adopting the world view of a swarm of locusts.

Does anyone knows if the Shongai cavalry keeps its unic trait on upgrade? I would assume so but I need a confirmation.

Btw this starting location looks sour to me. I really want to settle near a montain for obs, but I don't want to gobble a stone. And no idea what is lurking top.

Also this location screems to rush sailling, which is not the best warmongering path usually...

Indeed some challenge here, will try to give my strategy a bit more thoughts this time :)

I think it will be hard for me too, but I am willing to give it a try.
It could work well here, because they have several possibilities to generate money, this is normally my bigger problem than production.
My archers are afraid of the Goddess of Protection and nations following Tradition,
I often think keen then and try to found this pantheon myself, but this could mean to have one or two units less...
It will depend on how the first city assault runs, defenders, hills, how fast and where the opponents build a second city, other terrain issues...

I will never be able to play Civ this way, this way is not...beautiful

Exactly... victories are not fulfilling if they were won by sinking the world into a miserable dark age

I wish we had more deity cultural victory challenges where your empire becomes the crown jewel of the world... not this...
