Spoiler Introduction :
I have been Civilization series fan since Civ III and playing occasional multiplayer games since Civ IV. I really like the game consept. It's endlessly fascinating to see competing civilizations to rise from two units to grandness. AI in the series has been mostly OK but if you ask me, the multiplayer games have always been the best ones I have played. AI can't beat a human opponent in cunning be that either warfare or diplomacy.

Couple of weeks ago after playing a regularly buggy Civ5 multiplayer session, I tried to find out if there is fix or patch to repair the bugs we faced during the game. Well, I found none. Instead I found this thread: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=522035 After a moment I decided to sign it. I did not support all the claims in it, but mostly the problems we faced during our game were mentioned.

We managed to end that game properly, although some of us came near to quit. This was simply beacause a lot of waiting and desynccing during gameplay occuring especially in late turns. I came quite close to this myself, since my Byzantine Empire got almost destroyed already in the begging of the game, so I pretty much played only for not to be destroyed.

This tuesday we started a new game with 9 players. I decided to write weekly after action report, to show some of the problems and bugs that still haunt Civ5 multiplayer. I wrote a message about this and some of the bugs to Take2:s official Civ5 multiplayer forums, thinking it would keep the petition-thread thread there alive and to contribute.

Late in the evening after completing the first game session I tried to send my first AAR-post to thread, including (to my surprise) only one bug we faced. Instead I got a message telling me to wait untill moderators check the message. After waiting 2 days I am quite sure my message is never goint to show up. Anyhow, it seems to me that official forum is mostly dead. Most of the messages in multiplayer section are either complaints about bugs or tries to find players for multiplayer games.

So, this is my first LP on this site. It is also my first LP of Civ 5 and in english. This first post is of most parts a copy of report I tried to send to other site, so it is not very detailed. Next week, I try to put some more effort in it. We play this game Tuesdays for 3-4 hours, so you can expect update in next week.

Feel free to ask questions, give tips or just comment on badly placed cities. I include some screenshots.

Humble starting place for Spain

Game settings
Version: BNW, 1.0.3.144
Map Type: Continents
Map Size: Huge
Speed: Standard
Difficulty: Emperor
Victory conditions: Time Victory
Civilizations: 8 Players with randomised civs, except Venice

Today our game advanced all the way to turn 125. Game worked surprisingly smoothly taking in to account that we had 9 players. Only quite short lagging in start of every turn. We play Huge Continents Map, standard pace and Emperor difficulty level, with Time Victory as only victory condition and with Random civilizations.

Only major bug we had was trading between players. Player civilization A gives another player civilization B an trading offer. Civilization B can after this give an counter proposal. However the civilization A does not get notification about this counter proposal. To make things worse Civilization B can now complete the trade by simply accepting this counter proposal he made by himself!

Now this is not so big problem if you are playing with people you know, so you can trust them not to exploit this glitch. However, accidents happen and the glitch makes your trading negotiations annoyngly long since you can't send direct counter proposal. I can remember we did not have this bug pre BNW games, so it should be possible to fix it.

I myself got Spain. It was just my normal luck and I did not found any natural wonders during the 125 turns! I managed however to get my 2 scouts killed by barbarians. They did fine before that by finding numerous ruins. Later Mayans told me later that they had found Gibralar, apparently only natural wonder close to Spain and which I barely missed when scoutting near their area of the map.

Otherwise Spain performed fairly well. I managed to build Great Library and Hanging Gardens, before the Venetians, who were fairly expressive about this in the chat box, or where ever these imagination cultures try to prove their existence. Who knows, what there is in that great terra incognita? In diplomatic front Spain had some early diplomacy with Mayans. They were nice enough, although Spanish and Mayan borders are still far apart and there is no apparent reason for hostilities. Romans, on the other hand, are clearly trying to make things hard for Spain by placing their cities near Madrid and by blocking the northern part of continent. Oh, and there was also this incident.

Oh, it is the Romans. Wonder what they want?

They came to visit

And they saw

And left to Conquer some other, weaker civilization

Spanish army was fairly disorganized at that start of the war, but I managed to pull it together and use ranged units and Barcelona to counter enemy advance. After watching their warriors and archers to catch some too many arrows, Romans demoralized, at which point they turned their remaining ballistas and fleed. Luckily for them the river blocked my archers and they managed to get away from bombardment range. I didn't really have the units needed to continue this war, so a white peace was declared.

It looks good as it is atm :)
I assume the Romans made the mistake of not bringing enough melee along when attacking Barcelona?

Looks good so far, only comment I have is to include a demographics shot at the end of each session, seeing the relative strength of your empire compared to the leaders/laggers/average is always a nice way to see how you're doing compared to the rest, especially in MP where these things can vary a lot

They did bring couple of warriors but those were too weak. I was expecting legionaries, but turns out they did not have them yet. Main reason for starting the war now was that they build Terracotta army and got some extra units. They were probably assuming Spain was weak and did not have large enough army, or production to build one. According to demographics they had the largest production at that point. That was off course, before Spain turned their emphasis to production next turn. :D

I forgot to mention, we use our own turn-based rule to avoid freezing the game for players in war. Games Hybrid-based system is better than real-time. Problem is it makes turns longer, since player who is waiting his turn can't really do anything. Not even things, that don't directly affect the ongoing war.

"A player who declares the war, is allowed to move his units first. During this time, the other player is not allowed to move, upgrade or any other way use his units. He may however, change building ordes in cities, take policies etc, as long these actions do not effect the situation in battlefield.

After the attacker has made all the moves he desires to, he will inform everybody about being ready with his moves. Then it is the defenders turn to move his units."

Thanks for comments! And good point. I'll include demographics in the next update. :)

Part 2, where Bacchus leaves Rome for good

Our second game was left a bit short, since our host had to leave early and part of the players felt that we should continue next week instead of changing host now. There was also another player away today, so it was probably best to keep the AI-period as short as possible for both. We managed however to play some 40 turns, of which most were interesting from Spanish point of view. But before that I would like to show you some plans I made after the last game. There is also a screenshot of demographics for end of the first game.

PABih9Pl.png

Demographics for turn 125

Spoiler The plans for second game. I really made too many obvious plans. :
For the second gameday I planned these goals.

1. Find those natural wonders! We do where Gibaraltar is. There is also rumors of this far away land called Japan, that should lay East, so that is to be main direction for land based exploration. Also, Spain should have couple of ships to explore the coast.

2. Do something for those Romans before they do something to us! Roman Cadia lays in strategic position North from Madrid. Easily defendable terrain with lots of forrest and hills. The city also blocks some of tiles Madrid and Barcelona could use in later years.

Another possible way to make things harder for Rome, could be taking Tallarn. Main reasons is blocking Roman expansion to West and that Gold-resource they will be needing to keep up population growth.

3. Make some City State friends! There is City State of Zanzibar, East of Spain in strategic isthmus connecting western and eastern part of the continent. Melbourne, Mombasa and Jerusalem are West and Genoa in far Northern coast of the Continent. Spain already destroyed couple of barbarian encampments for those westerners, but to get more out of these relations (and to block Rome getting any) there should be Alliance status.

Genoa is possibly a lost cause since Rome has better connections to use his army to attack barbarians. However, getting Zanzibar and Melbourne as allies would make things greatly easier (considering happiness) for Spain and harder for Rome.

4. Found a religion! Simple pantheon is not enough for spanish belief system. Religion also contributes a lot points for civilization (Tulevaisuusautotalli, Mayans and Magirot all have religion).

Jerusalem is one possibility for making spanish people true believers. Also, there should be shrine in every spanish city to get steady basis for religion points.

5. Build bigger army! There is clearly a possibility for long hostilities with Rome, so army is essential if Spanish Empire is to flourish. Also it is needed to attack either Cadia or Tallarn.

At the end of first gameday Spanish army consisted of 5 archers, one spearman and two horsemen. I had some catapults coming up and planning to have 4-5 of those. Mounted units can be used to raid Roman road connections and burn down mines and fields. They can be also later to be upgraded for Conquistadords. Spain should also make some Longswordmans, to later upgrade them for Tercios.

6. Make some money! Well, there is need for money if Spanish Empire is to grow and support that army. So far Spain has no trade routes, but there is 3 awailable. However Rome does have active trade-routes and they are all directed to Spain.

So to make some money Spain should build Markets in all of its cities. However the trading will not be directed to Rome. It will be directed to those City States of which Spain wish to make allies..

The first things first. Spain found this Rock. It was already taken. Damn. Such a good looking rock

So Spain had a lot of things to accomplish during this game. I can tell you at this point, that most of the goals I set for myself were not met. This was however mostly because we had so short game today. For the first 20 turns of the game today, Spain was in process to build up its army. Technologically I aimed to research Physics as soon as possible. It would give spain more advanced artillery (Trebuchet) and made it possible to start building Notre Dame (+10 happiness), that would be important to keep spanish citizens happy and content during the war and after it.

Preparations continued all the way to turn 140, untill I felt ready for war. Two of the 4 catapults that were build for siege were upgraded to Trebuchets before start of the war. Most of the Spanish army would advance from South to siege Cadia, the second build Roman city that laid North from Madrid in nicely defendable terrain. Some units would be also deployed to hills and forrest East of the city to slow down roman reinforcements and both mounted units West from the city to intercept roman troops. This way spain could defend its precious artillery units and make it impossible for Rome to send any troops safely for defence of Cadia.

Spanish army is almost ready now

tPegVIXl.png

A short note was made by Spanish Imperial Court, that trading with Rome had been actually nice thing for economy and research

9m54Blql.png

I guess that this was the war in world history, of which the leaders got their assumption that wars could be fought and end quickly

After all the planning and preparations, the war was sadly short. After the Spanish troops came over the Spanish-Roman border, it took only one turn by Romans to understant that Spanish army was too strong for them. This came as surprise for Spain, but nevertheless a peace agreenment were signed. The terms gave Cadia for Spain and some red wine for the suddenly very thirsty people in Rome.

To celebrate the victory building of Notre Dame begun. In the meanwhile, Spanish army would deliver rest of the Roman Empire for Queen Isabella. So before the ink on the peace agreenment had completely dried out, Spanish army was on its way to new border between Cadia and Roman Capital, to take positions and prepare for new attack in 10 turns.

k5Wbmwrl.png

Armies maneuvering. People fearing for their lives. Romans getting more drunk. Good times for Spain

This time Rome made its best to defend its Capital. Rome positioned many ballistas and bowmen around Golden Throne. Spanish army was still more numerous and could use this its advantage, more troops were placed around Roman borders than within.

The war continued in turn 151. Initial Spanish advance was covered with partial bombardment of enemy troops, before Spain got its Trebuchets set up. Romans made brave resistance, untill most of their army was annhilated. They also managed to burn down those Winefields that gave the short lived comfort after lose of Cadia. It took untill turn 156 to Romans lose their capital for Spanish army. At this point the player of Rome saw he was defeated, therefore Rome continued its hopeless resistance with AI. Eventually in turn 163 the message was send to Madrid declearing that Roman Empire has been Conquered.

During the brief interwar pediod people of the Spain became religious. A lot of this was thanks to this religous City State of Ife that had two of its workers kidnapped by barbarians. Spain returned both of them after raiding two barbarian camps, of which one was also a recuested by Ife. And so the glorious beliefsystem of Imperialism became last of the world religions that were found.

Conquered Rome as part of the rising Spanish Empire

Lnw1ep4l.png

Demographics in turn 166

The second game was more than successful for Spain. Rome was not only defeated but also conquered, thus removing the main rival of Spain from the game. Truth to be told, I did expect longer resistance from Rome. In the end it seems that Rome had a weaker start for the game and its player did't expect so strong rematch from Spain. For note, this means that Spain is now basically alone in its corner of the world. It is however not the ideal situation, because it may slow down your research. But then again, I didn't have the time really start the exploration. So next week, there is new places to visit and new people to conq.. meet.

Spoiler Things that were bugging Spain :
Bugs in lobby

After loading the game you dont see your actual civilization in lobby before right in the beginning of the game. You may go around this bug by pressing ready and then deselecting it again. There is a minog bug there in "Readying" yourself also, since you need to click the damn thing twice.

PS. I still think that those imgur thumbnails are too small. Therefore, most of picture texts are now links for the orginal picture.

Hi everybody. Im currently playing Venice in same game, if it is okay for Tzaari that I can hijack this thread to display my awsome supercity and point out your shamefur display, I will start to write here :king:

Go ahead! Perhaps in some point in the future, there is more interaction between Spain and its overseas terr.. I mean independent city Venice. ;)

It is Minas Anor now for lesser people of Middle-earth, the most beatiful city existing.

So many lurkers, so few posts. It would be nice if people ask more questions and would comments.

I'm now on the ship with mobile so I try to write something basic how to play with Venice especially in multiplayer. Playing Venice is only about expanding your capitals population. Make sure population is always growing there. It is your only city so make it big as possible. Annex city states when your capital starts to stagnate because lack of food. Use caravans or cargo ships to deliver food there.

Since Venice UP all commerce wonders are must try to rush them if you think you can do it. Hanging gardens is very important which I failed because it gives you so much free food. Generally in mp if you want some wonder rush it always. If you don't rush then give it up, somebody else is definitely faster. Gams where are fewer player rushing is not must but more players, always rush.

Because map is huge and there are 10 players my first social policy was honor. I calculated I net gain more culture this way. Then I opened and finished tradition. About social policies of 90% of games open first honor or tradition and then Finnish tradition. Opening piety is horrible option because it doesn't give you culture at all and very little piety. You need cities first to make piety useful. Liberty is beginners trap, don't open it. While it sounds nice traditions hanging garden, wonder building bonus and free gold and less unhappines per populatin in capital simply makes it superior in every way. 90% tradition, 10% liberty openings in civV.

Religion is completely optional but if you can make it don't hesitate. Unfortunately getting right religion is completely matter of luck so your religion may end as useless. Remember that you can at least save faith points till industrial era and buy GP you need.

First things to built in your city are two scouts to hunt ruins and discover map. After that I usually build shrine to gain faith for belif. If you can, DoW city state to get a free worker. This is how you save 10 turns on start.

Final words are about how to defend your capital. As Venice you have only one city so don't neglect your troops. You most likely have very high population and few wonders so warmongers and opportunistic players really desire your city. Put scouts around your only city to notice enemy good time before he is on your border. Build roads to make your troops manuver better and also build forts to slow your enemy and to stop him before he can reach your desired city. Remember to build national epic to gain extra str on your units build in capital. If you opened honor also open great general and disciple bonus on your troops. Your city is graveyard of empires, a true Afghanistan. On sea, build so many ships to simply block sea assault and use range units to support your navy from land. Defend your city well or die.

Part 3, The Age of Exploration

h8zMZAel.png

Great Wall of Rome. Much good it did for the Romans, but they were skilled builders. Just look at that gigantic wall looming over the river!

Today we We played for 67 turns and game ended in turn 233. Third game was somewhat steady advance for Spain. Newly conquered Roman cities were merged to Spanish Empire more closely by building courthouses and connecting the cities with roads, that all lead to Madrid. More importantly, Spanish Explorers started their journeys to find new lands and people.

5bK57J4l.png

Spanish Explorers in Madrid are waiting for Astronomy. They need to 'upgrade' their Triremes to Caravels. We need to use our resources efficiently to haul all that gold and silver away from the new world, they say.

The shape of the world started to unfold and Spain found itself on same continent with Zulus and Arabia. Also many new City States were found around the shores. Another expeditions found that Morocco and Venice are West from Spain, just over a narrow sea. Spaniards were amazed to learn that Venice is actually the most populous civilization of the world. While Venice clearly competes with Morocco, these two claim to be benefiting from trade with each other. No doubt, this is true.

Norther part of the western continent is populated by Japan and Assyria. Of these two Assyria seems to be a larger empire, while Japan is small but technologically more advanced. Japan even took the first place in technological development. Of course, Spanish expeditions have so far been limited to coast.

5RpacMMl.png

Spaniards in their Caravel are cheering for Japanese Army. But does anybody know how the route to India? Anyone?

Spain also found two new cities on its coast to greet this new age of exploration and adventures. Toledo was first Spanish city to be found on Western Coast while city of Santiago became first on eastern coast. Since Spain may still be lacking foreign trade routes for a while, these cities should grow in fast pace with some help of Spanish trade caravans. The Spanish faith of Imperialism did not spread so well during the game, since I made a decision to spread the religion to city states first. This was because Imperialism gives +20 for citystate opinion resting point.

Anno Domini 1615, demographics tell us that Spanish Empire is the greatest of the empires in the world. Spain is first in most of the meters. Venice has much larger population and a bit larger GNP. The GDP does not concern me much, since the difference of GNP can be turned easily by city management. The population however, is another case. Venice is researching new technologies in fast pace.

7dV25UPl.png

Demograpchics, turn 233. Those paranoid venetians are really trying to

The Empire Second in points, Morocco, seems to be stalking in the shadows just waiting a right time to strike. Morocco is nowhere to be seen in the democraphics, but I have no doubts that they are second or third in most of the meters. They have a profitable trade with Venice, but then again it is Venice who needs those agreements more. Morocco is also in perfect position to strike Venice down when ever it decides to do so. For now, the trade seems to be more profitable tough.

There is a thing to be said about diplomacy. I place this in spoilers so Calad and perhaps other participants of the game can avoid it. I trust they actually do not read the things inside spoilers..

Spoiler Foreign policy and some plans :
TArbpRHl.png

Spanish Social Policies. This is a bit old screenshot, but the situation has not changed that much. Liberty is almost ready but for one policy. I don't think however, that Spain actually needs to speed up the settler-production at this point of the game, or needs one free settler. Completion of the liberty-tree would give one optional Great Person, but this is also not so good to be spend nearly 1500 culture it now takes to open one policy

Spain made many good trade agreements with the newly found empires of the western continent. And so did they of course, but from Spanish point of the view, there won't be much happiness problems, if these agreements can be maintained. And why not? Only one of the Westerners Spain did no trades whatsoever was Venice. Spain has no desire to help that immense population growth of Venetian capital..

Since we are playing a game of Time Victory, westerners definately need to take out each other, or they will be losing points. So far it seems they have been waiting to get culture production going. It may be that Spain is in somewhat disadvantaged in later game with Social Policies and Ideology, since it has already so many cities that raise the cost of policies. That remains to be seen.

Spain did not attack Mayas (whose player was away for this game) because an agreement was made between Spain and Mayans, that Mayans would give Spain two of their luxuries for free for 30 turns. Of course, I did not have even plans to attack Mayas in first place, but if they are willing to give away free luxuries who am I to say no?

eJBJ775l.png

jOnXkRFl.png

Spain, Spanish Rome and new Coastal Cities of Toledo and Santiago. Minimap shows the reach of the Spanish Expeditions. It looks like the world is round and we are in the middle of it? This is how the Imperial God created it I guess, for the Spaniards to conquer?

The game ended today in Spanish lead. Morocco and Venice are not so far behind in points. Player of Mayans was away for this game, but will be back next week and is surely still competing with Spain. Others are a bit more behind but there is plenty of room to expand and like Japan they might be just waiting for their time.

Spoiler Things that were bugging Spain. :
We had a rehost since one of our players was mysteriously dropped out of the game and could not hotjoin back for no apparent reason. He also dropped from Steam.

During the game Steam kept on informing us that the players of the game are playing the game. It seems to be a steam problem, but since Civ5 uses Steam to connect players it makes it also Civ5 problem, although a small one these days.

Changing host for this game worked quite well I think. Lets see how it goes next week, when player of the Mayans is back to host the game.

Good read so far, and good job doing so good with Spain even though you didn't even find many wonders early. :goodjob:

Good read so far, and good job doing so good with Spain even though you didn't even find many wonders early. :goodjob:

Thanks. :)

It is a bit funny that Spain 'found' a boatload of natural wonders probably thousands of years after others had already found them. Many of those are on coastal areas, so perhaps some may still end up benefiting the empire.

The downfall of Numenor and founding of Kingdom in exile: Venice Gondor

"Et Eärello Endorenna utúlien. Sinome maruvan ar Hildinyar tenn' Ambar-metta"

"Out of the Great Sea to Middle-earth I have come. In this place I will abide, and my heirs, unto the ending of the world".

So happend, that legendary land of Numenor was forever destroyed and small group of faitfull arrived in the shores of Middle-earth. Thus Elendil the Tall founded Kingdom of Gondor and named its only city as Minas Tirith, 'Tower of the Guard'.

First 125 turns:

Simply to put this: first 125 turns there wasnt plenty of diplomacy, traiding and so on. On this continent our civs are far away from each other and there were plenty of barbarians annoying us all. So I descripte my own playing time now.

Original starting location was a bit south in small forest next to sea. However I decied to gamble a bit and traveled to north. This location simply is superior in every way: good defensive terrain, a river, built on plain (windmill) and there are plenty of hills and the most important: a mountain for wonders and observatory.

My initial plan was to rush on Great Library and then Hanging Gardens and finaly Colossus. However I failed to built every of them, specially Hanging Gardens was very important on start. My building strategy was scout -> scout -> shire -> monument. Since map is huge there are plenty of city states and ruins so it is important to discover it quickly as possible. I found many ruins which helped me greatly to establish religion as second nation. Also south from Minas Tirith was Vatican City so I definetly was extra lucky to be able to have religion so easily and fast.

My first belif is Tear of Gods. I had only one gem resource but it was enough with extra faith from Vatican and from ruins. From that I went to Tithe (gold) and Feed the world (food). After second Great Prophet I picked Defender of Faith (combat) and Swords into Plowshares (more food). I did not open piety though later I may do that because of extra belif and 25% gold. I promtly named my religion as Tokienism.

Policies I opened was honor -> tradition -> aristocracy -> legalism -> monarchy -> landed elite and finaly oligarchy.

I had some hardships because my first warrior died and barbarians flooded constantly on my improvements. This is main reason why I failed to built Hanging Garden. However I was extra luckly because I managed to built Petra! As you can see there is desert next to me so building Petra actually is much better than Colossus which I failed.

As you can see I decied to research optics relatively late because Vatican was more beneficial as an ally and other city states were even further. Later I pupeted Colombos in the west.

Generally playing Venice is about fighting how to stop stagnation of your civ. It comes on many forms: economy, culture, research and military. I focused from start to keep science up by building library and National College as soon as I could. Money was easy after I managed to clear barbarians out to trade. Also killing barbarins gave me plenty of culture!

Gosh, even with one city you were still about haflway up the score list.

Till turn 233

At this point of game there started to be some diplomacy. On Middle-earth there are three other civs with me: Marocco, Japan and Assyria. Because of Maroccon UP traiding was the big deal between us. A small conflict was about to come over Colombo because it was friendly to Marocco and I wanted to puppet it. I decied not to care about Marocco but luckly they accepted my puppeting one turn before my merchant claimed it. Thus our relations remained splendid. With Japan I made a deal that they will found a city on desired location and then sell it to me. So was City of Minas ithil founded, Towers of Moon, and Minas Tirith was renamed as Minas Anor, Towers of Sun. I paid to Japan 24 gold for 30 turn because I simply had so much gold. Game bugged and somehow amount of gold I paid to Japan increased over time over 30 gold but I am not sure if this is a feature or not. Anyway Minas Ithil is in super location: there are tons of wheat and cotton everywhere, flood plains and desert hills. City is also next to mountain so I can build an observatory there. Finaly I puppeted Vatican as well. Now I have three cities where I can export food to my capital and it actually grown to the biggest city in the game. Thats right I have to biggest population in the game currently.

Spoiler :
61D8D348CB69ADEA558FEF34673C2538F4F9547E

Puppeting Colombo. A small glicth that game shows I can actually built national wonders there and units! Nothing happend when I clicked them. I also disbanded all CS units expect one to sit in the city. Note there is a mountain next to city, another super city for science (observatory gives science output +50%).

Spoiler :
18D2D572700ACD834544C76A55C0114320951737

Minas Ithil founded and Minas Tirith renamed. That location simply is super in every way. I was afraid some other civ would build their city there or Japanese would simply dishonor our treaty so I was prepared for military conflict.

Spoiler :
E2575115EC7934211F077C0A19485454BDF1F11A

And finaly Vatican City. Too bad I cant rename puppets so thats why Colombo and this are black sheeps in my Gondor. A mountain again and all extra military units were disbanded.

I had a small race against Marocco of spreading our religions into Japan. However Marocco simply had greater faith output and passive spreading bonus on his religion so I came as second. Marocco got three cities, I only two. I was also able to convert some city states as well to gain extra gold.

So time passed and I was tech easily new techs and built many wonders. Few setback I had like Assyria and Japan annexed city states that provided culture to me. Eventually congress was founded and all nations gathered there.

Spoiler :
91F320E4C1D55C9A01D2BBDD752A56A387C245B2

Wonders of Minas Anor. My city simply has superior production and fast teching helped me a bit.

Spoiler :
A439F93CA449DB5EE4493D884A0B59F1F5CFDB9C

Welcome to Afganistan everyone. As you can see this wil not be an easy target. Marocco said during last session: "that person will win this game who controls Minas Anor". I simply have so many wonders and huge population. I shall defend and I shall survive till the end of this game. Whoever wants to conquer ths city needs planes or nuclear weapons.

Below here is my top-secret file about my opinions of other players and their civs.
Note: DONT READ THIS IF YOU ARE PLAYING IN THIS GAME! After game you can :)
Spoiler :
Marocco: a friendly nation. They are my main trade partner so it is rather unlikely they will attack on me any time soon. They are, or atlest should be, afraid of northern Assyria!
Assyria: they are aggressive in every way. They are clearly planning expansion and have annexed 3 city states. Marocco is their closest and Japan is second. If they will expand on this continent more it is no difficult to to choose which one they will go first!
Japan: they took one of my city states! They also helped me to found Minas Ithil. Althougt they are low on score they have most of techs and few key wonders. They definetly are not so weak as they seem to be! Very soon they will also found an ideology, I asked which on and he said order. I need to trade with them more in future so they do not desire to attack me.
Spain: an evil nation. They annexed Rome! According their public maps their only neighborhood is Maya and I belive they will feel a bit uneasy atlest. On last game I destroyed Spain hard so he seems to be a bit extra hostile towards me. I believe he will be number one villain on this game... dun dun duu...
Arabia/Zulu/Maya: too far away to say anything specific.

Below here is my top-secret strategy of winning this game.
Note: DONT READ THIS IF YOU ARE PLAYING IN THIS GAME! After game you can :)
Spoiler :
Note: we have only time victory so whoever has most of score on turn 500 wins this game!

- Adopt freedom. I have my first factory but I dont have 2 other coals. I will get them soon from city states and they I will buy needed factories into my cities.

- My plan is to built all following wonders: Brandeburg Gate, CN tower, Sydney opera house, Christo render, Great Firewall, Hubble, Kremlin, Neuschwanstein, Pentagon, Red fort and Statue of liberty. This list is important because I will ignore other wonders.

- Spain is very dangerous nation. I need to form a coalition against him.

- Congress! I will get the most of votes and manipulate world! Muahahahahaaa!

Currently I am having troubles with happiness because my puppets have grown too large. Having puppets still pays off even thought thet generate 33% extra unhappiness per citizens and city also generates more they dont increase so much science and culture cost. However they do generate 25% less science, gold and culture. But they are absolute neccessarry to grow my capital. Thats why Now I have the largest population now!

Today we will play fifth session so more updates on this week. First 200 turns often are warm-ups. Now all nations are on same table and truely the strongest shall survive!

Part 4, The Success and failure of Conquistadors

Today we played for 67 turns and ended in turn 300. So far Spanish Conquistadors had found out that there is a wealthy land in the Western continent, where roads are made of gold and trade ships are bulging with goods. So, what would a Spanish Conquistador do?

Exploring the new lands to be part of Spanish Empire

Well for the first part, there was some exploration. Spaniards made their way trough the hills and jungles of Eastern coast of the Western Continent. Some savages were encountered during the way but nevertheless progress was made. Finally, after a long trek in wilderness, the golden rooftops of Minas Anor were seen shining in the horizon! It was a beatiful and fertile land and the local Venetians were friendly and.. wait, what? They were not friendly? Oh, they are actually circling our troops with their army and making a suggestion for world congress to close up foreign harbors for Spanish trade galleons!

This will not stand!

For the Queen and Country men! And for the Imperial God above us! And for all that shiny gold in particular!

The war was short yet profitable one. The original conquistador expedition was quickly defeated by Venetian troops. This can only be blamed on for expedition leaders eagerness to blunder those Venetian trade caravans, before actually waiting out for next turn to have enough movement points to do this. Spanish Conquistadors were not a strong enough force to launch larger Pillage-and-Run-attach untill the end of the war. And so, the war on land was over. On the high seas however Spanish Caravels turned out nice profit by blundering four Venetian trade ships. Moroccans made a request for Spain to stop attacking venetian tradeships bound to their harbours and since only one such ship was seen left, Spanish Crown accepted for the sake of better relations. Soon after this peace agreenment was made.

Western Colonies

After the war first Spanish Colony on the new continent was found. Nuevo Madrid was found on lush river delta to strengthen Spanish claims on Western Continent. Another city, Salamanca was found by accident by yet another overly eager Conquistador, who decided to found a new city instead of building up a camp for healing his troops. Town was luckily enough in strategic position and had Mt. Kilimanjaro in her area! So for the first time in history, there was a natural wonder inside the Spanish Empire!

Minas Anor Observation Force Maneuvers. Venetians fear for their gold.

Exploration force of three Conquistadors was later send East from Venetian lands to see if there is anything to see there. And there was. A perfect spot to observe Minas Anor and plan the plund.. the merry treks that could be done on Venetian soil, if they ever were to gift the Spaniards with peaceproofing open borders treaty. Of course none of such treaties could be done with Venetians, since they were envious and most of their time was used to plan and plot new ways to make things harder for Spanish Empire.

Spanish Heartland, 1750 AD

Empire grew near its heartland as well. Public schools were build in Spanish cities to keep population educated. Factories were opened to keep people in work. New cities of Valencia, Murcia and Zaragoza were found to keep the Empire growing. It was also decided that orderly people are happy people, therefore Order was founded as defining ideology in Spanish Empire. This made people happy (not that they were unhappy before) and Venetians to gaze in awe of the happy and (second most) populous people of the world. Broadway was build in Barcelona and Eiffel Tower was build in Madrid.

Japan and Mayans followed the Spanish ideological lead and adopted Order as the basis of their societies as well. The relations had long grew better with Japan since Spain supported Japanese capital as the capital of World Congress. Venice had chosen freedom much earlier and Moroccans decided to go for Authority, therefore making their unholy alliance even more unholy.

Conquistadors, tired of seeing only Minas Anor for years and not seeing enough plundering of Minas Anor, ready to depart for a new exploration.

Eventually these two had made long enough preparations to challenge Spanish Empire in Western Continent. Had Spaniards read the signs properly, this war could have had a different course. However Spanish Empire had grown indifferent of the menace over her Western Colonies. Morocco had claimed it publicly that its building a road to its new Eastern cities. It was also noticed shortly, that there is single Moroccan cavalryman scouting Spanish Western Colonies, and that there is somewhat more units appearing near the border.

For a short time, it seemed that things would stay calm. Spain finally made a agreement of sharing embassies with Venice and also draw off its long-serving Conquistadors of Minas Anor Observation Force. From the Moroccan-Venetian point of view this must been seen as a sign of weakness. It was the Moroccans who strike the first blow.

Spoiler Stories of the war, for the people not participating in the war.. :
It means also you Calad! ;)

This is not good.

As a complete opposite of the Spanish-Venetian war the war between Morocco and Spain started, and has so far stayed on solid ground. Defenders of Salamanca had not so much as a word to say when the well positioned Moroccan army started their advance by shelling the Salamanca with their modern artillery. It took only two turns to bombard the defenses of the city and occupy the town. Spanish counter attack is yet to come. Luckily enough the terrain around Salamanca is very hard indeed for large scale troop transportation and Moroccans are struggling to get their army through the mountain pass.

While the heirs of Conquistadors were in full retreat on land, back in the high seas the deception of Venetians was ready to start. Earlier Venetians had intimidated Spaniards by claiming to be building a fleet of boats, that could not only sail without sails but also sail underwater. They were laughed by the Spanish Admiralty who in response claimed that if this were to happen, Venetians could use the rotten boards of Spanish frigates as a toothpicks. Humor was that doing so they might accidentally stab their gums and therefore have a blood poisoning.

VlOfn4pl.png

Damn. I hope they do get blood poisoning.

At the start of the hostilities Spanish navy was disorganized and placed in no less than three different fleets and number of lone ships to protect the trade routes. This crappy disposition of the fleet was made in the illusion of slowly improving relations with Venetians and also after discovery of three Japanese frigates sitting right in the middle of the sea dividing Spanish Colonies and mainland. Japanese were no threat however, since they had no interest in the war.

The opposing force of Venetian navy was concentrated and operated a fleet of new submarines. Needless to say, they will have a lot of rotten toothpicks for years to come! Spain had some newly build ironclads, it had hoped to be top of technological advancement, but this seems to be proven wrong and they were not operated as a single fleet.

While the Spanish navy made all very good attempt to slow down Venetians by sinking in its path, Spanish army had a hard time to transfer over the strait of continents. First wave of troops did get through, but newly updated artillery pieces were left behind because what could only be called the Venetian Deception with City States. Venice had used its gold to bribe Genoa and Mombasa on their side. While their army was small, it was enough to slow down Spanish troop transportation. It may even be just enough to prevent Spain transporting its precious (Shelling things to pieces since Roman times! 1st Spanish Catapult brigade.) artillery pieces over the sea, since the ships of the Spanish Empire can no more give protection against Venetians.

Situation in Spanish Colonies. Salamanca is lost, defense of Nuevo Madrid is underway.

The war rages on and it remains to be seen if Spanish force that did get over the sea is enough to stop and turn around the Moroccan army. Spanish plan is to destroy Moroccan artillery before being destroyed by Moroccan artillery. Make no mistake, Nuevo Madrid will not fall as easily as sparsely defended accident town of Salamanca.

The Mayans, who had a defense pact with Spain made peace with the Moroccans at first possible change. They claim that the luxury trade is too important for Mayan Empire to keep up its happiness, so no war could be waged. Spain had agreed to give up her position of alliance with Luxury producing Zanzibar for Mayans in return of the treaty, but now it seems that Mayans are not going to be of any use in return. I hope to keep up the good releations, but now I am not sure if it is worth it.

Spanish Heartland and Situation in Western Coast of Empire

But, what happened for the Conquistador of Minas Anor Observation Force? Well, they were already on their way to discover new lands and people inland if they could get a passage through Morocco or Assyria, but they had to turn around when the news came about Moroccan declaration of war. They made it all the way back to the coast only to be greeted with blazing venetian gatling guns. They were not happy about this and so the Last Stand City of Pamplona was found. They are still making resistance and trying to get the life out of at least one Venetian unit before meeting the God of Imperialsm in her High Hall of Merry Expeditions and Blunder (no typo there).
