Civilization 5 - Game of the Month Training Series Game 85
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\//////////////////////////////////////////

Welcome to the Eighty-fifth game in the GOTM V Training Series! There are plenty of features in Civilization 5 Brave New World to explore and the Training Series games will allow new and old GOTM fans to try out these features in a friendly environment. You are all encouraged to post your questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads described below. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread. Before going into the details of this game, we would like to ask you to abide to our most sacred rule: don’t replay any turns. If you make a mistake, accept it and try to recover. It's better to do the bad moves in the Training Series instead of in the actual GOTM competition, once it starts.

Please note: If you wish to make a video of your game, please do not post any links to it until after the game submission date has passed. This is because of the potential spoilers that are created by posting before the end date. Thank you for your cooperation.

Intentional use of the Science Overflow Bug is banned. Its use will result in your game being disqualified for results.

In this game, the designated VC is Culture. All VCs are enabled but results will be published by fastest Culture victory turn.

In this game you will play as The Iroquois and lead the Iroquois Empire to victory. It's a standard-sized arborea map played at Deity difficulty and at standard pace. Culture is the designated VC for this game, all victory conditions are enabled. You will have until June 1st to complete the game and submit.

Civ V BNW - TSG85 Game Settings:
Playable Civ: Hiawatha - Iroquois
Number of AI Opponents: 7
Number of City-States: 16
Map type: Arborea
Map Size: Standard
Difficulty Level: Deity
Game pace: Standard
Game options: Quick Combat is disabled. (You may turn it on using the game options menu at any time during gameplay.)
Game Version: This game was created in Civ5 Brave New World version 1.0.3.144. NO DLC are required for this game but the Gods and Kings and Brave New World expansions are required.

In this game, you will be playing as The Iroquois, you possess The Great Warpath. Units move through Forest and Jungle in friendly territory as if they were roads. These tiles can be used to establish City Connections upon researching The Wheel. Caravans move along Forest and jungle tiles as if they were roads.

You can train Mohawk Warrior, it replaces Swordsman. The Mohawk Warrior is as powerful as the Swordsman in clear and hilly terrain but receives a significant bonus in forest and jungle. Also, unlike the Swordsman, it does not need Iron to build.

You can also build the Longhouse, a Unique Building that replaces the Workshop. The Longhouse increases the city's production output for each forest within the city's radius.

This is where you will start:

Information about threads associated with TSG
TSG Announcement thread (this one). This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don’t be afraid to ask questions). It’s also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Please don’t post any information from a game you have started. Instead use the next thread.

Opening Actions thread. This thread is used to discuss the game once it's on the way. There are no reading or posting restrictions as such (apart from normal decency), although we encourage players to use the spoiler tags for screenshots. Here you can post questions related to the game and share your achievements/anger/frustration/victories while you play. During the time the game is active, please do not post any information concerning the game outside of the spoiler threads including screen shots, videos, or recorded/live-cast Let's Plays on other websites.

After Actions thread. In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state (preferably in the post title) your victory date and score, as recorded in the Hall of Fame, and the most important: your path to glory! We will create a separate thread with the results at the end of the one month submission period (sorted by date and score). Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after one month, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.

File Upload System
We now have a game file upload system you can find here. Please use it to upload your completed first attempt by saving the game on the turn after your victory or defeat. (by using the "lemme play one more turn" feature) Please note, you must submit your game on the turn following Victory. If you continue to play, the game overwrites the data and your submission could be rejected by the submission system.

This game runs for a month and ends Sunday, 1 June 2014.

The save will be available for download on 1 May 2014, midnight Central Daylight time (UTC -6:00) in the US.
The Save can be found here.

Not sure how arborea looks like in general but if there is only rare mountain sites everywhere then maybe we have a great chance to get Machu Picchu. Is it worth stepping on the deer to be closer? Not sure about that.

Colossus and hopefully two sea side cities to start. Probably settle in place, although I almost never do. Split Tradition and Liberty, really stack those hammers.

Deity Culture victory with civ without cultural traits - finally, some challenge I am really happy with this :)

Culture, Deity... Yes that is one achievement on Deity I need. Even though I've seen many people do this with a 3 city core and play nice, I still need work on my warmongering so Id like to try to mix the two together. Im gonna have to read up on what wonders to grab and this should be a challenge since I never focus on this side of the game. Looking forward to it! I know KB27787 is going to be happy with this one!

If you get the chance watch an episode of survivor man where he is in the Canadian arboreal forest. Pretty thick stuff. Very easy to get lost. I was once in a smaller forest fishing and got turned around and lost fast. Took me an hour to get out to the highway.

Yeah, I am really thinking about beating everyone senseless and then winning with a few great works. I would scout first, get writing then IW, then maybe the UB for mass Mowhawks. Then work D&P to theo and beyond.

So arborea has more forests, but can be an archipelago, pangea, continents, large islands...it's random. Those camp forests look ripe for chopping into an early wonder too.

With any other civ I'd agree on chopping those camps' forests, but in this case, you'd lose a the extra production the longhouse adds.

This will be my first GOTM. Never won culture on deity nor played an arborea-map.

My thoughts - Trad-lib-mix. If I get my hands on early slaves I will chop forest for early engineer-wonders.

But we'll see what the map looks like. :)

I just won my first deity game yesterday.
Map was small.
I was France.
Yet I won a diplo win, cultural was impossible...

It will really be a challenge for me indeed, just to finish the game lol

Any more experienced deity player thinks techink to mohwak is faisible at this difficulty?

So far in my practice games production has been fine, but food is a big problem on this map type.

If its coastal, all will be well for food. By Renaissance or late Medieval, production for key wonders should be competitive, I think. We have a slight bonus to trade, and if we have hammers and gold, we should be OK. And this civ is #1 for forests, obviously.

The problem with being forced to use your trade routes for food is the loss of gold and science. The loss of the science at this level really hurts, since it's typically about 4 BPT per trade route until you catch up. I was also seeing between 10 and 20 GPT per trade route.

I'm sure this game will force us to make some very tough decisions. Build a shrine or a granary first? Which techs to prioritize (we probably need marine techs, but also philosophy and also we want longhouses ASAP)? When to build a second settler? With regard to the trade routes, I think food shipping is the better option. With longhouses, any new citizen can immediately be put to good use on unimproved tiles. Getting markets and universities up fast is a way getting the gold and science that you otherwise would get from trade caravans.

I think caravans to AI civs help them too much, unless you are looking for a short term tech advantage over someone. Example in this case could be a foreign route t40 to 70 to speed up the UB.

Better to be internal or a CS mostly though.
