In the year 2148, explorers on Mars discovered the remains of an ancient spacefaring civilization.

In the decades that followed, these mysterious artifacts revealed startling new technologies, enabling travel to the furthest stars.

The basis for this incredible technology was a force that controlled the very fabric of space and time.

They called it the greatest discovery in human history.

The civilizations of the galaxy call it...

Game Features:

• Players will control different characters from the Mass Effect universe.

• The game will follow the story of the first Mass Effect game. This includes traveling to different worlds (and, in some cases, choosing in which order you visit these planets) and making decisions concurrently with lynches which will often (but not always) affect the game / players directly.

• Some players will have a sizable number of rechargeable abilities to choose from, which mirror abilities from the Mass Effect games.

• There are no scanners / investigators - the host will not help you find scum!

• Players have shields and health, and cannot die unless they lose all health. This roughly approximates the hit point system from Team Fortress 2 Mafia.

• As always, twists and turns.

• Most players will be vanilla townies (i.e. have no night abilities).

• Designed for ~30 players, although this number is flexible.

• Upon a player's death, their alignment and role will be (truthfully) revealed.

Rules of Play, Part I

1. Before the game begins, everyone will be sent a basic townie PM. If you do not receive another PM after this one, then you are a basic N7 Marine. These will outline the standard townie's win conditions, as well as other information about a standard townie. Keep in mind that I am sending this PM to everyone, so it is neither an indicator of guilt nor of innocence.

2. You are not allowed to quote any part of your Role PM or or any other PM I send you, in public or in private. You are allowed to say what role you are and what powers/abilities/whatever you have, but quoting your entire Role PM or even partially quoting your Role PM is not allowed. Unsure of what you can say? Ask me before you say it.

Spoiler :
This is okay:

"I am Bob the Pizza Delivery Guy, and each night I can seduce a middle-aged woman, effectively roleblocking them."

This is NOT okay:

"This is my ability:"

Zack said:
Pepperoni Prodigy: Each night you can prevent a woman from performing any night actions by smothering them with pepperoni and kisses.

3. Private communication between players is NOT allowed, unless I specifically say otherwise. This includes, but is not limited to: private messages, IMs, skype, QuickTopics, etc.

4. No editing the content of your posts, and no editing your post at all if it has a vote. Make a new post if you must. You may make grammar or spelling edits, but be sure to list the reason in the edit box. Editing a post with a vote in it renders that vote invalid.

5. WOGs will occur if I deem them fit, whether it is due to inactivity or rule breaks. Please, please don't make me WOG you. If possible, I will replace you.

6. The host is not a player in this game. Don't try to lynch me or target me with your night actions or send me raunchy messages.

7. The player list will be kept updated on the first page, as well as after each update. Each update will be linked to on the first page. Alignment will be revealed upon death.

8. If you are going to be absent during the game, you may tell me which night actions to perform while you are away, until you get back. If you intend to miss many days of voting, send me a message explaining why and when you think you'll be back. This way, I won't WOG/replace you.

9. If you have any questions about the game, ask them in the sign-up thread. If there are enough questions or I feel like the same question keeps being asked, I will start a FAQ section right here below the Rules.

10. BE ACTIVE! You're encouraged to not only vote, but to participate in lengthy and in-depth discussions in the thread. This game was designed for active players, not inactive ones.

11. Have fun! This is, above all, a game. There will be winners and there will be losers, but having fun is a more important objective than winning the game. Don't be afraid to take risks.

12. If you're unsure whether or not you're allowed to do something, don't do it. You can always ask me. (Read the rules first, though.)

13. Do not post in purple. That is my color.

Rules of Play, Part II

Setting:

Spoiler :
This game takes place in the Mass Effect universe. It will generally follow the storyline of the first game in the trilogy, although there will be some deviations.

For the uninitiated: here is the link to the Mass Effect Wiki.

If you haven't played the games before, you should be fine. However, I strongly encourage to play your way through the trilogy, if you haven't already - it is phenomenal, easily my favorite gaming experience ever.

Team Victory Conditions:

Spoiler :
The game ends when one of the following conditions are met:

1. All of the town's enemies are dead. This constitutes a Town Victory.

2. A faction achieves its goal of wiping out the town and any other enemies. This constitutes a Mafia Victory.

3. There may or may not be third-parties with their own victory conditions individual of those of #1 and #2.

Individual Victory Conditions:

Spoiler :
Now, a team's victory is easy to grade, but how are all of the individuals ranked? Well, I'm glad that I pretended you asked. Here's the breakdown (0 - 100 point scale):

Faction Victory: 80 points. Check the above spoiler. Did your team win the game? This is far and away the most important factor in determining your success.

Bonus: no limit to points. Each bonus award has a differing point value. There is no set limit to how many bonus awards an individual player can receive, or how many points they can earn for these awards. The bonus awards are listed below (depending on how the game plays out, some might not be applicable):

Spoiler :
To the Bitter End, Level II: x points. Awarded to the player who was the sole survivor of the game (x = the number of points needed to boost the recipient's final score to 100).

Dedicated Participant, Level II: 15 points. Awarded to the player(s) who voted every Day phase and sent in a night order every Night phase (if they had a night action) they were alive (minimum 5 phases survived), as well as averaging at least five posts per round of survival.

Town MVP: 15 points. Awarded to the player belonging to the town who contributed the most to the town's efforts.

Non-Town MVP: 15 points. Awarded to the player not belonging to the town who contributed the most to their faction's efforts (mafia or third-party).

Outstanding Non-Town Effort: 10 points. Awarded to the player(s) not belonging to the town who contributed greatly to the their faction's efforts (mafia or third-party).

Outstanding Town Effort: 10 points. Awarded to the player(s) belonging to the town who contributed greatly to the town's efforts.

Suck it, Death: 5 points. Awarded to the player(s) who kept contributing a significant amount after their death in the game.

Dedicated Participant: 5 points. Awarded to the player(s) who voted every Day phase and sent in a night order every Night phase (if they had a night action) they were alive (minimum 5 phases survived).

Bane of the Scum: 5 points. Awarded to the player(s) who kills the most non-town players (whether at night, or by the lynch, or both).

Bane of the Town: 5 points. Awarded to the player(s) who kills the most town players (whether at night, or by the lynch, or both).

Takhisis Award, Level II: 5 points. Awarded to the player who finishes the game with the most posts.

johnhughthom Award, Level II: 5 points. Awarded to the most entertaining player.

Renegade: 5 points. Awarded to the player(s) whose votes ended up causing the town's Renegade level to increase the most.

Paragon: 5 points. Awarded to the player(s) whose votes ended up causing the town's Paragon level to increase the most.

Paragade: 5 points. Awarded to the player(s) whose votes ended up causing both the town's Renegade and Paragon levels to increase significantly.

johnhughthom Award: 3 point. Awarded to other entertaining players.

To the Bitter End: 3 point. Awarded to the players who survived to the end of the game.

Takhisis Award: 3 point. Awarded to the player(s) who finished the game with a notably high number of posts and/or more posts than the host.

I reserve the right to create more bonus awards after the game has ended.

Game Phases and Basic Gameplay:

Spoiler :
Phase Rotation: For the most part, the usual sequence of 48-hour days and 24-hour nights will be followed. Deadlines may very depending on my schedule, but Day will always be at least 36 hours, and Night will always be at least 24 hours.

The host reserves the right to extend the deadline of a phase for any reason, whether it be personal or due to a lack of player activity. There are no abilities with the capability of affecting deadlines.

Day Phase: This is when players vote to: lynch a player, make a paragon/renegade decision, and/or which planet to travel to next (when applicable). Everyone is expected to participate in all voting procedures (more on this later).

Night Phase: Some players have night actions they can perform at night. These players are expected to send a PM to the host detailing which action(s) they wish to take. To do so, please use the following format:

PM subject title -- Mass Effect: Night x Orders

*please either quote or specifically name the ability you are using here*

*please specify the target of this ability here*

(If you have more than one ability to use, repeat, albeit in the same PM.)

Lynch Voting:

Spoiler :
During the Day phase, players are expected to vote to lynch another player. Repeated failure to do so will result in replacement or the Wrath of Zack.

Lynch Choices:

1. Vote for a fellow (living) player. This indicates your desire for that player to die that day.

2. Vote "Abstain". This indicates you have no official preference for the outcome of the day's lynch (or lack thereof), but that you are nonetheless active and participating. If you post, but do not vote, this is by default counted as an abstention.

3. Vote "No Lynch". This indicates your desire for no players to die that day.

To be counted, a vote MUST be posted in bold typeface. Anything else, such as dressing it up with a "Vote:" preface or styling it in a fancy accusation, is unnecessary.

If you desire to change your vote, simply vote for another player or choice.

A retraction without a re-vote will count as an "abstain" by default, as will any invalid vote (such as editing a post containing a vote).

If you abbreviate the name of the person for whom you are voting, please do so in a clear and consistent fashion. If I can't figure it out, I will count it as invalid.

The following was copied from Team Fortress 2 Mafia, with some slight changes.

Special Rules: Whoever gets the most lynch votes will take 50 damage per vote, second-place will take 10 damage per vote, and third-place will take 5 damage per vote. This makes it theoretically possible to kill more than one person in one lynch, or to fail to kill anyone in a lynch, or to kill the second-place candidate but not first-place, and so on.

Exceptions: On Day One, there will only be a paragon/renegade decision - no lynch vote. As soon as there are only ten players left, the voting will change to normal, where whoever gets the most votes will be lynched and nothing happens to anyone else.

Other Voting:

Spoiler :
During the Day phase, players are also expected to vote their opinion in paragon/renegade decisions and which planet to travel to next (when applicable).

Almost every Day phase, there will be a new decision to vote on. There will be two options to choose from:

Paragon: This indicates your desire to choose the Paragon option for this decision. To do so, vote in bold blue. Paragon choices are more compassionate and heroic, but not necessarily "right" or "good".

Renegade: This indicates your desire to choose the Renegade option for this decision. To do so, vote in bold red. Renegade choices are more ruthless - think 'at all costs' or 'the ends justify the means' - but not necessarily "wrong" or "evil".

Each decision will add "points" to either the town's Paragon or Renegade level. This will have an effect on the game, in addition to the effect of the decision itself.

When a vote for which planet to travel to next is necessary, simply state your choice in bolded teal.

Shields and Health:

Spoiler :
This game uses a "hit points" system similar to Team Fortress 2 Mafia, but with some slight changes. Every player has both shields and health. It is possible for shields and/or health to be both depleted and replenished.

Shields: These are your first line of defense. In most cases, your health cannot be depleted as long as you still have shields. Shields naturally replenish at a rate of 15 points each day phase, until they are fully replenished.

Health: This is the more important value. Shields only serve to protect your health. If your health reaches 0, you will die, regardless of your shields. Your health can only be replenished if acted on by an external force (such as an ability).

Playing While Dead:

Spoiler :
You are encouraged to keep playing and participating once your character has died, whether you desire to try and contribute to your faction's victory in any way you can, or just be silly and mess with people.

Restrictions:

1. The dead may post in the public game thread; however, they cannot vote on anything during the Day, or carry out any Night actions of any kind.

2. Dead players cannot reveal or imply any specifics concerning their role or faction at any time.

3. Dead players cannot quote or reference any host-sanctioned private communications they had while alive, regardless of who it was with.

4. Dead players cannot reveal, recount or allude to their previous night actions (or results thereof in the case of investigations) publicly or privately – even to confirm a previously made public or private reveal.

5. Dead players cannot communicate privately with any living players, even if they could do so while alive.

Anything else is fair game. You can make cases and try to push lynches, but this must be based off of public in-thread behavior.

PLEASE BE VERY, VERY CAREFUL WITH THIS! :)

EDEN PRIME

Captain Anderson: "Is that clear, Shepard?"

Commander Shepard: "Yes, Captain. Take my team down to Eden Prime, recover the Prothean artifact, complete the tutorial, gain XP and collect loot."

Captain Anderson: "Who's on your team?"

Commander Shepard: "I was going to take myself, Lieutenant Alenko, and Corporal Jenkins."

Captain Anderson: "No, seriously. How many people are you taking?"

Commander Shepard: "I already told you."

Captain Anderson: "Are you insane? You're taking three people? What do you think this is, an away team from Star Trek?"

Commander Shepard: "Fine, fine. I'll take a couple dozen marines with me."

Captain Anderson: "Three ****ing people... Christ..."

As Shepard turned to walk away, Anderson stopped him.

Captain Anderson: "One more thing, Shepard. You'll need to choose someone to investigate the Prothean beacon once you get to it."

Commander Shepard: "What? Why?"

Captain Anderson: "Just follow your damn orders, Commander."

Commander Shepard: "Yes, sir."

With that, Shepard left, ready to retrieve the mysterious Prothean beacon...

There is no lynch vote today.

To volunteer yourself to look at the Prothean beacon, vote your name in bolded blue.

To force someone else to look at the Prothean beacon, vote their name in bolded red.

It is now Day One.
