Civilization 5 - Game of the Month Training Series Game 88
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\//////////////////////////////////////////

Welcome to the Eighty-eighth game in the GOTM V Training Series! There are plenty of features in Civilization 5 Brave New World to explore and the Training Series games will allow new and old GOTM fans to try out these features in a friendly environment. You are all encouraged to post your questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads described below. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread. Before going into the details of this game, we would like to ask you to abide to our most sacred rule: don’t replay any turns. If you make a mistake, accept it and try to recover. It's better to do the bad moves in the Training Series instead of in the actual GOTM competition, once it starts.

Please note: If you wish to make a video of your game, please do not post any links to it until after the game submission date has passed. This is because of the potential spoilers that are created by posting before the end date. Thank you for your cooperation.

Intentional use of the Science Overflow Bug is banned. Its use will result in your game being disqualified for results.

**Make extra note of the Game Options. There are more options than normal for this game.

In this game, the designated VC is Science. All VCs are enabled except Domination. Players and AI may not win through a Domination victory. Results will be published by fastest Science victory turn.

In this game you will play as Inca and lead the Incan Empire to victory. It's a standard-sized map played at Prince difficulty and at standard pace. Science is the designated VC for this game. You will have until July 15th to complete the game and submit.

Civ V BNW - TSG88 Game Settings:
Playable Civ: - Pachacuti - Inca
Number of AI Opponents: 10
Number of City-States: 12
Map type: Highlands
Map Size: Standard
Difficulty Level: Prince
Game pace: Standard
Game options: You will start in the Medieval Era. Resource Distribution is Sparse. No Ruins are enabled. Domination victory is disabled for this game. Quick Combat is enabled. (You may turn it off using the game options menu at any time during gameplay.)
Game Version: This game was created in Civ5 Brave New World version 1.0.3.144. Inca and Spain DLC and Wonders of the Ancient World DLCare required for this game and the Gods and Kings expansion is required.

In this game, you will be playing as Inca, you possess The Great Andean Road. Units ignore terrain costs when moving into any tile with Hills. No maintenance costs for improvements in Hills; half cost elsewhere.

You can normally train The Slinger, a Unique archer unit. But since you start in the Medieval Era you have already learned Construction which unlocks Composite Bows, making the unit obsolete.

You can also build Terrace Farms, a Unique Incan tile improvement that may only be built on hills. It provides +1 food plus +1 food for each adjacent Mountain tile.

This is where you will start:

Information about threads associated with TSG
TSG Announcement thread (this one). This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don’t be afraid to ask questions). It’s also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Please don’t post any information from a game you have started. Instead use the next thread.

Opening Actions thread. This thread is used to discuss the game once it's on the way. There are no reading or posting restrictions as such (apart from normal decency), although we encourage players to use the spoiler tags for screenshots. Here you can post questions related to the game and share your achievements/anger/frustration/victories while you play. During the time the game is active, please do not post any information concerning the game outside of the spoiler threads including screen shots, videos, or recorded/live-cast Let's Plays on other websites.

After Actions thread. In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state (preferably in the post title) your victory date and score, as recorded in the Hall of Fame, and the most important: your path to glory! We will create a separate thread with the results at the end of the one month submission period (sorted by date and score). Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after one month, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.

File Upload System
We now have a game file upload system you can find here. Please use it to upload your completed first attempt by saving the game on the turn after your victory or defeat. (by using the "lemme play one more turn" feature) Please note, you must submit your game on the turn following Victory. If you continue to play, the game overwrites the data and your submission could be rejected by the submission system.

This game runs for a month and ends Tuesday, 15 July 2014.

The Save can be found here.

Nice, no accidental Domination wins. I haven't tried playing with Domination turned off before, so I'm wondering if it's possible to completely wipe everyone out then just play until you win.

Plus Wonders of the Ancient World to boot. WOOT!

Liberty is going to give you a pretty big edge in this one.

Pretty good condition : Highlands, Desert start, Incas, Medieval start, SV. I wonder how spare resources will affect the game.

Not sure, but I suspect it may make you covet the enemy lands and hinder your population capacity due to happiness. Hence the lifting of the domination victory condition.

BTW, in my first test game I noticed Wonders of the Ancient World is pointless with the Medieval start, because you can't build any of them.

That's my point, it's so rare we get to see that DLC in a GotM, only to still have those wonders denied to us when it is enabled is very annoying.

Apologies for that. I must admit it was a holdover setting from another effort I tried with an Ancient era start. It may seem like a muddled mix of extra options but they each factored into testing some gameplay assumptions, I just forgot that WotaW was still in there until too late. I also like that you can instantly start building Terrace Farms and I figured not very many would be angered by not using Slingers.

Yeah, the slinger's effect is both nice to save it and an annoyance. You can't use them to protect your civilians. If there are no open tiles behind them the effect won't trigger. So, yeah, I don't really care that we can't build them.

Any chance we can have WotAW in another game soon where we can build those extra wonders?

Leif and I are enjoying messing with these settings but we'll have some standard era starts too. I realize those wonders are easier to get on the lower diffs so I'll include them more often plus other DLCs too. Might be a few 'all DLC' games (except for the Map Cradles).

Do you have any assumptions about how this game will play out that you would like to share?

Why do you ask for spoilers?

If someone has played the game, then they aren't going to comment in an Announcement thread. :mischief:

I don't want you to spoil anything. I just want to discuss aspects of game theory.

Example: These settings could be interpreted that the human can take all the caps and then build science. It might be fair to say that is what was in mind upfront or after the fact. However, the best players in the world are playing this, maybe there is a better path.

That's why I was asking for some comments in the post game discussions. After the game, you could say, well we chose to add civs and take way CS because we thought that the player would react be doing X. But some players did X and some players did Y. I wouldnt want you to say upfront well, we added civs and took away CS so you will have to do X to succeed.

After the game we all know what the players did and what works well, but we dont know thoughts from the other side. Do you see where that is out of balance?

I think having these discussions can lead to more interesting games.

the 'gameplay assumptions' arent specifically about how a game will play out but more about how the different skill levels may assume the AI will play with No Dom VC or what players will assume the game settings/map/diff will mean for Inca's strengths/weaknesses. Since Im trying to balance the skill levels I tried to keep the different assumptions in mind before committing to them. I dont normally play with many of these setting combos in my spare time so playtesting these games is also somewhat new to me. I'm always curious to see the results of many different assumptions of what would/wouldnt or did/didnt work.

i've never been one to 'pull back the curtain' too much on actual methodology for fear of being predictable when we were doing mostly standard, vanilla settings games. now that we're reaching beyond some comfort zones maybe we (Leif and I) might divulge 'secrets' of those decisions in the AA threads once the submission dates are over. but i'll ask him first before i set an ill-thought-out precedent. i have bosses to appease, haha.

thanks

Hi folks... but it seems that the download link doesn't work...

the same message pops up
"Sorry, file TSG88_Start.Civ5Save is not available."

The game begins on the 15th of the month. The link will not be active until midnight, server time (think it is UTC-6) on the morning of the 15th.
