I did change a bit versus my typical world and go with Shillen suggest of a Pangea.
Barbs are the typical roaming.
Our scientific competition is: Korea, Ottoman, Persia, Germany, Russia, Greece and Babylon. We definitely get aggressive civs by grabbing all the scientific civs.

I think our civ is choice isn't that clear, so I just pick a good civ with Egypt whom I haven't played in ages.

4000 BC (pre-turn) - Settling on bonus grassland seems like a waste, so I move to SW to stay on the river. This auto-clears a square and we still get incense in range within 10 turns.

3950 BC - Thebes is formed and we auto-pop the hut next to us. Of course it is deserted.

3200 BC - We still haven't met anyone, so I decide to go with wheel in 23 to know where the horses are.

Remember 10 turns per round - STRICT 24 hours got it, total 48 to complete.

Our starting world:
We have a killer food zone.
One luxury inside our borders.
2 more if we can get them after the food sites.

Lee must be testing me. :) OK, whip to complete the granary and then MM to the incense so we don't grow next turn and waste our food.

2950 1. Thebes granary->settler

2900 2.Thebes changed to barracks. Pop hut deserted. Thebes set to settler. Lux 10%

2850. 3. We suddenly met 2 Bab spearmen. We meet with them and they are 3 techs up! I drop our research to 10%, it will take 12 more turns for wheel but we need to get into the tech brokerage game, so might as well start getting some bargaining chips gathered up. Spot the barb camp to the west.

IBT Babs start Oracle

2800 4. explore

2750 5. explore

2710 6. barb kills our warrior in the north :(

2670 7. Hook up incense Thebes settler->warrior move settler with escort toward hill between the 2 haystacks. [Good defense and 3 bonus food squares]

2630 8. move

IBT warrior settler pair defend against barb and win. warrior goes vet. Persian settler spearman pair come out of the fog from the south.

2590 9. Persia has 2 techs, we have 2. Although we can't get a fair trade yet I go for bronze working so we can move toward ion working and build spearmen if we need them, give them pottery, CB and 1 gold for it. Change Thebes to spearman, it needs to build military between settlers anyway. Persian is pretty close so I'm watching their every move.

2550 10. Position settler on hill with escort, ready to found city.

Exploration will do us good but we really need to watch the action that's going on around us. I went for that hill with the 2 haystacks cause it's usually best to settle really good sites first, regardless of the position to other cities, quality of site is most important

2550 BC (0): Being a bit of a worrier about losing a capital I almost consider changing Thebes to a a warrior but I think at least I hope that the spear will complete in 3 and not 4 turns after growth. Persia has IW, Babs do not we shall see for how long.

2510 BC (1): Persians leave the area and head under the fog. Exploring with the warrior. I found Memphis and pray for tech and not barbs. Deserted village :(. only barbs would've been worse. Start a warrior. Bab just got the Wheel.

2470 BC (2): Lux to 10% for 1 turn before the spear completes.

2430 BC (3): Thebes builds a spear starts a warrior.

2390 BC (4): Warrior steps out of Mephis to protect our worker from barbs.

2350 BC (5): Thebes builds warrior starts another. Okay Well someone got Alphabet and writing be cause we got 2 new Contacts with Korea and Russia. It wasnt' the Babs.

Russia has : Alpha, Writing, Wheel, WC, IW, and Mysticism to go with contact with the Ottomans, Germans and Greeks.

Korea has the same.

Now this is normally a :nono: but I think on this map with everyone soo close it is going to be very quick that communications are know so I do it now.

Trade Communications with Babs and 30 gold to Korea for Alphabet and Warrior Code. Trade Alphabet to Hammi for the Wheel and 35 gold. Trade contact with the Babs to Russia and 17 gold for Mysticism.

We are now on par with Hammi and down IW to Persia but down Writing to Russia and Korea.

Current research switched to Polytheism : Have been burned 3 times lately on Math.

2310 BC (6): A korean spear/warrior pair appears from the east. Road to Mephis is completed. Add Germany to our contacts list. They are up IW, HBR and Writing. Can buy HBR for 5gpt and all our gold, 59. Hmmm. No one is trading with Persia or Hammi so I go for it buy HBR from Korea for 48gold and 4 gpt. Sell it to Hammi for 39 gold. HBR, 35gold and 2gpt to Persia for IW. IW to Babylon for 36 gold.

2270 BC (7): In case you were wondering we have no iron anywhere in sight. :(. Nothing new on the tech front. Thebes builds a warrior starts a settler. Babs have a worker for sale but we can't afford it.

2230 BC (8): Memphis builds a warrior starts worker. We cannot afford writing.

2190 BC (9): warrior are heading East. Warrior is in west scouting for the next town.

2150 BC (10): Persia starts the Colossus. Persia just picked up writing. Hammi has a worker for sale but the price is steep. 35 turns remain on Poly, we have 64 gold and 4gpt and paying out 6 gpt to other civs. We are only behind writing that I know of.

Here is the save:

Nice trades hotrod, once those AI start trading contacts might as well get in there like you did.

I would consider getting a barracks in Thebes and using it to produce military. When it gets so big that it's costing us too much lux, build a settler from it. Memphis should probably whip a temple as soon as it can to get that cow into it's umbrella and then use it to build settlers. There is loads of food and it can produce settlers much faster than Thebes will.

Just checked the save again 2 turns remain on the settler from Thebes and 3 on the worker at Memphis. And :smoke: I accidentally moved the worker from the wheat before irrigating it.

@hotrod: If you build a city next to a village, barbarians will never come out of the village. (That is how you popped the hut right, by founding next to it?)

-Sirp.

@Hotrod - I fully agree with the contact selling.
If nothing else, the AI is very quick to DEMAND contact.
I prefer to get something from it.

I like CB idea of barracks in Thebes. This is not the best of a settler-building city.
Of course, the occasional settler may help us get the badly needed luxuries near us.

@sirp: Thanks I did not know that! Also, sorry again about not irrigating the wheat, not used to having a 5 food tile in despotism.

Hotrod, we are an industrious people, while we get our two cities set up to crank settlers and military, and be able to improve the area around Memphis, not to worry. [Did you play GOTM14?, we had haystacks on flood plains in that one too, they will make a big difference for us in this game]

Wow, settler flood indeed...
the only limitation will be to get enough shields to churn them fast enough....
:)

I did but not very well not well enough for me to remember it .

Yeah with all that food available we are shield poor.

But you can't get to the cattle yet right ? you need border expansion no ?

You :satan: !

Well OK technically it has not been done yet, that was my point :D
