Hello! So this isn't a story or tale in the traditional sense, I clearly fail at those as seen by my Persia thread with generated no interest. However I do have a fun experiment I will be playing that I thought I would track on this thread, and if people decide they want to see it out, then great.

I recently started learning the ease of using world builder for a separate project I was helping a friend with, and thought to myself that it would be cool if I could use world builder to edit the world and then run DoC in a different, alternate world and just... see what happens! So I decided on an alternative reality where humanity and civilization developed just as it does now, except it all started during an ice age!

I started at 3000BC as China, and on my first turn, went into world builder and did some massive editing. As you can imagine, the north and south poles are much, much larger and stretch into what is normally inhabitable land. So the map is a little... squeezed. On the other hand, the previously uninhabitable places like the Amazon, Sahara, Siberia... those are now lush places to live!

My general rule was that desert becomes plains, plains become grassland, marshes become jungles and jungles become forests, and the poles are much larger and tundra stretches farther south. But I also used a little artistic creativity to make the map look what I would consider "realistic" for what the earth could have looked like during an ice age.

I will check in with world builder on a regular basis to see how civilization is developing throughout the world. I'll be playing as China for now, and then switching to a new civ at some point later in the game. I have no intention of winning, i'll be half-heartedly going for UHV's and generally making sure I stay stable and alive, most importantly, and maybe ultimately play for a space race victory. But the biggest point of this exercise is just to see what happens when humanity develops during an ice age!

Don't expect consistent updates on any sort of schedule. I'll simply be updating this as I see fit and as time permits.

Some civs are going to do much better than normal, and some much worse. Screenshots for a preview below!

Give a man a scenario and he plays it for a day. Teach him how to use Worldbuilder and he... uhm... plays for a lifetime I guess? Anyway I'll be watching this with interest for the five posts or so until you abandon it.

subbed

This certainly seems like a...unique idea.

I am actually excited by this because I can see DoC in action too, using worldbuilder!

Both Babylon and Egypt appear to be expanding faster than normal, I guess? Babylon working on the Oracle, Egypt already has the Pyramids and Great Sphinx. China is working on a settler for city #2. This is turn 45. FYI: I might suck at this game :p

Man the Vikings and Argentina are going to be so OP in this game I mean look at their starts. Too good!

LOL yes I know. The British Empire isn't going to be much. I'll be curious to see if it becomes an Arabian world, and/or how the Mali do.

Turn 72:

India and Greece are pretty standard starts. Egypt and Babylon are both pretty huge and growing fast. Phoenicians don't seem to be sailing to found Carthage - whether thats due to me or just something weird, who knows. Maybe they can't get their borders open to leave since the Egyptian culture is so grand. And yes, it appears Babylon and Egypt are racing for the Temple of Artemis. Babylon is going to win.

China at 3 cities, nothing out of the ordinary.

America doesn't look like it will be affect

Not really, its just going to be a different shape. All of the inhabitable land in Canada and the northeast USA is gone... but the deserts around and south of the rockies is now very inhabitable. The midwest will be moved further west!

There is definitely a lot more food in the places that are inhabitable. Turn 98, I got the message that Babylon crashed, but according to the world builder its still there....

The amazing amounts of food has let to a lot of city spamming. Egypt is leading the scoreboard, tons of cities and look at all those cottages. I screwed up at China and didn't found confucianism, oooppss... Carthage has finally been founded. Greece just doing alright, the Persian empire has Babylon surrounded. India also getting into the city spamming business. China spamming cities now too! :crazyeye:

Yikes! I'm very curious to see how this game will go.

So far, the city spamming is out of control since there is so much food and growth in the center of the world. Rome has taken out Carthage, although its struggling to keep its people hanging together.

Greece took Babylon and Sur, it has a weirdly sprawling empire mixed with Persia, who didn't do so hot in this world. They actually do have a very divided empire.

Egypt is powerful and large, spreading to take Jerusalem, but also having a city that declared its independence. Ethiopia is still new.

Indian empire is very large, but they don't seem to like the middle of the continent for some reason. Tamils have just started.

And China well... China is weak. I've been too focused on trying to rex into my core area and build the UB Library everywhere. Tibetan swordsman almost did me in, but I whipped a bunch of archers to save myself. Just now getting to the stone and need to mine the copper to the south. No iron working yet. Its pretty bad, I haven't been able to trade anything with the AI, didn't found Taoism. I may be forced to switch away from them out of necessity!

Egypt is so OP.

Wow, I'm surprised at the Persian underperforming. It looked like they benefited the most out of any civ from the map changes.

Actually so far Egypt benefitted the most. Those are still flood plains around the nile, except now they are actual plains instead of desert flood plains. Persia did get a big upgrade, but yeah I don't know why they aren't doing better. I'll be curious to see how long Egypt keeps it up as their inflation gets out of control.

Persia had Greek conquerors thrown at it, and also suffers from an unhistorical barbarian pressure.

Also, can you upload the map as a WB file?

Another update!

The Roman empire just collapsed, although it did really well, almost stretching east enough to catch all of the historical Roman land. All of the independent cities in Rome were formerly under Roman control until a few turns ago.

Greece is split up badly and still hanging on, although I don't expect they will last long.

Egypt is yes... overpowered. They now control land into the middle east and are holding up nicely, any declarations of independence are swiftly re-captured by their big army.

Ethiopia should do well, but they are still in their infancy.

India is also doing very well, the Tamils are squeezed and the Indians too strong for them to make an impact. Persia did collapse and now is being overrun by Barbs.

Korea just spawned and China is doing well with land and fending off barb attacks. We finally learned Monarchy so now I can whip to my hearts content and grow much bigger to use all the scientist specialists. I expect to grow well rapidly now, although I do need to catch up.

The fun part is I haven't played DOC all that much, so I'm sure there will be some surprises. Christianity was founded just a turn or two ago, so I know right around when I am. I definitely need to get to the copper down south soon.

Arabia is already strong, with this they are gonna be so OP.

Another update, turn 163ish.

Greece finally collapsed after their northern city was overrun by Barbs. They obviously can't survive with only Babylon.

Egypt continues to be overpowered, now moving along the north african coast, taking former-Carthage.

India also doing very well. The Tamils are still there, obviously there is no more war between the two, but Tamils have no where to expand to.

Korea looking weak. China is very large and its culture gobbled up the NE barb city. But still no metal. Barb horse archers are throwing themselves against my hill defense archers and getting slaughtered constantly. We will settle our last city W of the copper in the south.
