Civilization 5 - Game of the Month Training Series Game 98
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\//////////////////////////////////////////

Welcome to the Ninety-eighth game in the GOTM V Training Series! There are plenty of features in Civilization 5 Brave New World to explore and the Training Series games will allow new and old GOTM fans to try out these features in a friendly environment. You are all encouraged to post your questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads described below. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread. Before going into the details of this game, we would like to ask you to abide to our most sacred rule: don’t replay any turns. If you make a mistake, accept it and try to recover. It's better to do the bad moves in the Training Series instead of in the actual GOTM competition, once it starts.

Please note: If you wish to make a video of your game, please do not post any links to it until after the game submission date has passed. This is because of the potential spoilers that are created by posting before the end date. Thank you for your cooperation.

It seems the recent patch (1.0.3.276) has made the Science Overflow bug impossible. Intentional use is still banned until we verify this.

In this game, the designated VC is Culture. All VCs are enabled but players results will be published by fastest Culture victory.

In this game you will play as Theodora and lead the Byzantine Empire to victory. It's a standard-sized map played at Prince difficulty and at standard pace. Culture is the designated VC for this game. You will have until December 15th to complete the game and submit.

Civ V BNW - TSG98 Game Settings:
Playable Civ: - Theodora - Byzantium
Total Civs (including player): 8
Total City-States: 16
Map type: Large Islands
Map Size: Standard
Difficulty Level: Prince

Game options: You will start in the Ancient Era. Quick Combat is enabled. (You may turn off Quick Combat using the game options menu at any time during gameplay.)
Game Version: This game was created in Civ5 Brave New World version 1.0.3.276. Korea, Wonders of the Ancient World, and Polynesia DLC are required for this game and the Gods and Kings expansion is required.

In this game, you will be playing as Theodora, you possess Patriarchate of Constantinople - Choose one more Belief than normal when you found a Religion.

You can train the Dromon, a Unique Byzantine naval ranged unit that replaces the Trireme. This unit is the first ranged naval unit of the game and fights at +50% strength against other naval units. It cannot enter Deep Ocean tiles outside of the city borders.

You can also train the Cataphract, a Unique Byzantine mounted melee unit. This Unit has a higher Combat Strength, defends better, and attacks cities more effectively than the Horseman which it replaces. It is weak to Spearmen.

This is where you will start:

Information about threads associated with TSG
TSG Announcement thread (this one). This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don’t be afraid to ask questions). It’s also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Please don’t post any information from a game you have started. Instead use the next thread.

Opening Actions thread. This thread is used to discuss the game once it's on the way. There are no reading or posting restrictions as such (apart from normal decency), although we encourage players to use the spoiler tags for screenshots. Here you can post questions related to the game and share your achievements/anger/frustration/victories while you play. During the time the game is active, please do not post any information concerning the game outside of the spoiler threads including screen shots, videos, or recorded/live-cast Let's Plays on other websites.

After Actions thread. In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state (preferably in the post title) your victory date and score, as recorded in the Hall of Fame, and the most important: your path to glory! We will create a separate thread with the results at the end of the one month submission period (sorted by date and score). Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after one month, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.

File Upload System
We now have a game file upload system you can find here. Please use it to upload your completed first attempt by saving the game on the turn after your victory or defeat. (by using the "lemme play one more turn" feature) Please note, you must submit your game on the turn following Victory. If you continue to play, the game overwrites the data and your submission could be rejected by the submission system.

This game runs for a month and ends Monday, 15 December 2014.

The save will be available for download on 15 November 2014, midnight Central Daylight time (UTC -6:00) in the US.

The Save can be found here.

The new patch has changed around a few things like Social Policies. Some timings may alter slightly how you would choose to strategize. I recommend some test games if you havent explored these new patch effects.

Thanks
HR

Hmm a hint of desert down there, there should be some more silver around. Guess we will have to do some exploring to figure out what pantheon. Seems straightforward sacred sights and pagoda and mosque to start then cathedrals

This should be really interesting, Byzantium gives a lot of options on low difficulties, and will be really strong on a water map like this.

Large islands might not be enough room to make sacred sites work plus it might keep civs separated too long.

Since its Prince, the Great Library is available along with 2 writer slots. The Parthenon has tons of culture and can get you through the first tree faster.

This will be my first post-Civ:BE Civ V game. So nevermind the changes to the social policies, I'm expecting to have to build an ultrasonic fence to keep the barb-aliens out.

Looks a good game, thanks!

Gonna move warrior to SE hill to check for more silver. Settler might go NE depending on what the warrior finds.

Not sure if GL is worth it, I'd rather go for GE producing wonders like SH and Pyramids?

Cultural victory with Theo is definitely one of my favourites. But I have never played it on large islands so I shall heed the advice and have a practice. It's usually fast expansion, left side liberty and a charge through piety for sacred sites. How that is affected by island land mass size remains to be seen. And I need to test how the piety patch plays out.

"Not sure if GL is worth it" - not usually, but large islands may make the need for astro more necessary. On pangaea for example it is best not to reach renaissance to keep faith building costs down.

advice for those testing the map type: my first map I tried I was isolated on an island with 1 CS and the coastal pathways didnt take me to any other island. i couldnt meet any more AI until I (or they) got Astronomy. (didnt expect that, honestly.) Large Islands doesnt allow you to set sea levels so that couldnt be tweaked to help with that. if you are set on trying Sacred Sites and roll a map with no coastal connections to any other CS then I'd restart for a better comparison. I won't say how many AI you can meet but you certainly dont start unreachable by coast. but if you are going for a non-SS strategy, maps like that can still work just fine.

even though this map is set in stone Im still messing with culture vics on water maps. Byzantium has an interesting mix of units to be beneficial for either water or land maps. Dromons and Cataphracts can come at a good time for all sorts of strategies. And the UA obviously gives you a lot of advantages and flexibility with your religion. I realize many are probably knee deep in CivBE but i had a lot of fun messing with this combination.

I'm on a Mac (no patch yet). Does it just mean I'll have it easier or harder than patched players or that I won't be able to play?

Depends on your plan of action if you're thinking sacred sites. You get those quicker if you're thinking 4 city tradition that is a bit harder as you dont get the free monument until the third policy so you end up hard building a monument

With Patriarchate of Constantinople, after Tithe and Cathedrals I'll add Pagodas (extra tourism with Sacred Sites).
I'm going to try minimizing military except for two Dromons, maybe three, so early promotions can carry over. Large Islands are well-protected by nature. In fact for those of us who prefer a building game to a fighting game Large Islands could become the preferred map.
