CityIOT: Apocalypse Noir

Welcome, one and all, to the latest iteration of CityIOT. We're going to be seeing some changes this time around, but first, the map:

Spoiler :
attachment.php

Rather than taking a pre-existing city and taking over it, this time around, players will be forging a new path in the ruins of a 1930s-era world. Technology and the challenges you face will reflect this setting; don't expect jet engines and modern vaccines to come save you this time around.

Secondly, in the largest major change from the earlier games, the game will start with all of the money that will be in it, with the only exceptions coming from the addition of more players. Rather than paying the GM and getting money that way, funds and actions can only be undertaken by negotiations with the other players and the resources you have already established. I do not care how you actually negotiate prices or what they end up being, that's part of your challenge. It shall be assumed that the government is capable of construction of new buildings/facilities if no player ensures they are able to do so, and again, negotiations will then go through the government. You must still send orders to me to approve feasibility.

Lastly, updates will come no more frequently than once every 24 hours. This should be easier on all of us.

To join, please submit the following:
Spoiler :
1) A character (please include a description and brief backstory)

2) An organization (you may join another player's, but at least one of the founding members of any organization must provide a brief description and backstory)

3) Buildings on the map - Each player gets a home and one other building; each organization gets 3 buildings for the first player and one more for each subsequent member. Each building needs to be clearly identified and described. Keep size reasonable; one player should not be controlling more territory than roughly one of the islands in the bay at game start. To clarify, organization and character buildings are controlled and organized separately.

That's it. Please keep your submissions physically possible and in tune with the setting, but other than that, this is not intended to be an overly serious game. Have fun with it, and try not to torch the entire place this time.

Character: Oscar M. Lockwood
Background: The Lockwood family was always a family of poor farmers trying to survive off the land. Before the Calamity, Oscar tended crops and worked with animals under the supervision of his father. A life of a farmer was not one for Oscar, however, and he worked throughout his education so that he could go practice law. The result was a disaster, and Oscar returned to his family farm from law school after failing his classes in the first year. When the Calamity came, he met with a group of survivors to help rebuild the city by doing what he does best. Farming.

Organization Name: Red Rabbit Farms

Red-Light Grey: Personally owned farm where land is rented out to people
Red-Dark Grey: Main farm, two buildings worth.
Red-Black: Farmers' market.

Astarte
Background: No one is quite sure where she came from, or even what she looks like under the veil. Asarte is the name she uses in her communiques. She lives here with a pair of equally unknown female companions.
Buildings (blue, north to south):
-Asarte's House: Someone's island house which Asarte recently occupied, it has a dock attached.
-Lighthouse: Part of Asarte's personal property is this 17th century colonial lighthouse, which has never been electrified

Babylon Zoo
Background: A very mysterious gathering of a couple dozen people from all around the area, who sail up here once every few weeks to discuss...something, and on occasion build something. In any case, their mission is known: to rebuild the Tower of Babel, one brick at a time, and reestablish ancient Babylon. Why? No one knows.
A site has not yet been chosen, either.
Buildings (red, north to south); Names used are from Babylon Zoo communiques:
-The Place of the Priest-Kings: The gathering place for Babylon Zoo. Upon this site, once just bare field, observers have noted that a miniature replica ziggurat has slowly been erected.
-New Ctesiphon: A collection of humble buildings that has grown and changed over the months. The only permanent thing here is a dock.
-The Gardens of Nineveh: For such a grand name, this is just a humble plot of land where a few varities of uncommon fruits and vegetables are grown, but mostly just wild weeds and flowers. The island soil is not great, but somehow adequate. It is believed this is a testing ground for rebuilding the Hanging Gardens of old.

Signing up as a guy named Rick.

Rick doesn't own any land.

Rick has a dog named Sam. They're from up north somewhere.

Rick wears a duster and a cowboy hat. Sam wears a blue bandana.

Rick has a ten dollar bill crumpled up in one pocket.

Still encouraging new players; in the meantime, only one of the current sign-ups is completed (thank you, Christos), so please finish those as soon as possible.

Map so far (will colour code by player and organization after more sign-ups are in). Christos and Mosher are considered to be acceptably finished sign-ups. If everyone finishes their sign-up, we will have enough people to formally start.

In the meantime, if you have completed your sign-up, you can now campaign for city government. Initial council will have three equal positions, who can decide amongst themselves how they would like to proceed with further government structure and policies.

The green buildings belong to the MPG. The little grey spot is Max's home.

Character: Isabel Junge

Description:
Spoiler :
343px-Elizabeth_Gurley_Flynn_point.jpg

Background: The only child of a German industrial tycoon, Ernst Junge. He emigrated to America, to the city of Metro, shortly after the end of the Weltkrieg due to a fear of a communist revolution not unlike Russia. These fears were unfounded, but Isabel was born during this flight, making her an American citizen. Ernst continued to run his company from Metro, and attempted to expand his factories into the city. Tragically, he was never able to crack the market, and at the time of his passing in 1925, he had no industries left in Metro.

As the only heiress, Isabel inherited her dad's personal fortune (although not the company, which went to one of his associates back in Germany), making her one of the wealthiest socialites in the entire city. With enough money to secure a stable lifestyle for the rest of her life, Isabel instead devoted her life to writing. She wrote numerous novels based on European folklore, but her disappointment they were largely ignored and never sold well. Isabel also spent her pre-collaspe days at rallies for the Bund, a minor political party she was a member of. As a woman, she wasn't ever considered as a candidate, but she was important in spreading their message across the city.

Following the collaspe, Isabel was convinced only a strong leader could possibly save them from dying with the world around them. With her clout over the former high society in Metro, Isabel knew she could be that leadership, damn the chauvinistic attitudes against her. She had to act fast, before it was too late...

Organization: The Neubund: A loosely aligned coalition of businesses that Isabel is able to extend her influence towards. The bonds are generally based on personal relations, and could theoretically break if there was ever a fallout between them. The Neubund is generally noted for their appreciation for a forceful executive, a state-led re-imagining of the economy to fulfill the survivialist needs, and a general conservatism in social values.

Personal possessions:

Brown: Isabel's house. A up-end house on the waterfront
Pink: The Black Forest. A high class restaurant that serves traditional German meals. Before the collapse, Isabel loved the restaurant so much that she elected to outright buy it.

Neubund possesions:
Royal Blue: North Metro Police Station. Some have observed that the local police chief, Henry Kaufer, has been spending a little too much time with Isabel. Rumors of a more-than-friendly relationship between the two is a common gossip topic throughout Metro. If true, who knows how much influence Isabel would have over her lover...
Grey: The Bund Headquarters. The namesake of this organization, the Bund used to be a political party that advocated for America to have stronger ties with Germany, and for a restructuring of American society to be more like Germany. Obviously, the former goal is now obsolete giving new realities, but the party still remains. Junge was, and still is, personally a member of the Bund.
Teal Blue: Falcon Arms Co. The only American venture by Ernst to go even remotely well. Falcon Arms is, as the name implies, a gun manufactory, although with the recent collapse of the world economy, they also have also decided to expand into a makeshift gunstore as well. Ernst quickly sold the company off to Jack MacConner, an Irish-descendant friend he made in America, after allegations that he was secretly using the company to create an arms supply for the Stahlelm. MacConner still continues to control the company to this day, and he still has the same loyalty to Ernst's daughter that he had for Ernst himself.

---

I, Isabel Junge, announce my candidacy for city government. We need strong leadership to pull ourselves out of this mess, and I know I can make sure everyone cooperates for the survival of Metro, and perhaps humanity as a whole. Under me, everyone will be safe from the horrors outside, have food on their plate, and be secure that we will have the means to rebuild and preserve under this great calamity. Together we must rise, or separately we will all die.

Thomas Arrow, businessman extraordinaire.

His organization is Arrow Shipping and Construction, whose stated goal is to rebuild the city as quickly as possible. They have a pier with ships (1), a warehouse (2) and a construction office (3).

Mr. Arrow has declared he is running for city council on a platform of reconstructing the city.

Edit: Forgot a house. Will do something about soon.

Comhghall O'Barrfhionn
Possessions:
  • Beige Square: Comhghall's house, where he lives
  • Brown Rectangle: Comhghall's One-Room Schoolhouse, where he teaches children on the weekends; entomology is overrepresented in the curriculum

Jolly O'Barrfhionn's Insect Smorgasbord (est. 1930)
Possessions:
  • Bright Green Circle: Insect House, where the invertebrates are raised for consumption
  • Dark Green Rectangle: Farm plot where food for the invertebrates (not for people, don't even bother asking) is grown
  • Purple Rounded Rectangle: The Jolly O'Barrfhionn's Insect Smorgasbord (est. 1930) main building, where a wide variety of delicious & nutritious invertebrates are sold to the public

Comhghall O'Barrfhionn was poor, Irish, & hatless when he immigrated to America; he was so poor, in fact, that he had to raise & eat insects to keep from starving. He eventually developed a taste for them, and, after the collapse of society, decided to open a restaurant/grocery store specializing in insects & invertebrates, since they were very cheap, easy to raise, & packed with nutrients- making them the ideal food for the poorest of the poor. Also, in his youth, he would beg for food outside of university classrooms, so, with the city lacking any educational infrastructure whatsoever, O'Barrfhionn decided to open a small schoolhouse and educate the city's youth in his spare time.

Edit: Comhghall O'Barrfhionn is running for City Council, on a platform of ensuring the poorest members of society have not only enough food, but the right food. That is to say, his food.

Updated map, still not unified format because I'm trying to figure out how to do that best. Please use this version for claims.
