There has been some interest expressed in an Always War game in Vanilla Civ, so for those who can't play PTW here is it.

The level will be low (regent or monarch) and it is for those (like me) with little or no experience in AW.

I am looking for a roster of 4 or 5 people.

For the civ I favour the Greeks (early good defender) although this is still up for agreement and the map will probably be pangea (to stop some of the civs getting an insurmounable tech lead whilst we are at war).

The rules will be standard for AW. After meeting a new civ we are allowed to do some trades, but we must declare war before leaving the diplomacy screen for the first time. Also war mobilisation won't be allowed because we wonlt be able to get out of it as well as the game breaking bug.

I'll post a map later, when there is enough interest.

Roster, room for one more

The greeks are a crutch.
Also war mobilisation won't be allowed because we wonlt be able to get out of it as well as the game breaking bug.
You will get out of it whenever an AI is destroyed, as you have no more war with them. Also it can be useful at the end of the game, if going for conquest.
How about Germany? Spearmen from the start, militaristic.
I'm up for it but I can't play during the next week or so.

Yeah it'd start getting old pretty quick if everyone always played Greece in Always War :)

There are lots of good civilizations for Always War. The three most desirable traits are,
- a strong ancient or middle age unique unit
- a civ that is militaristic
- a civ that is scientific

Any civ which has two of three is a good civ for AW. A good civ which was used in the original Always War are the Zulu. Expansionistic is close to useless in AW, but militaristic is nice, and impi are a very nice (and underrated) unique unit.

Germany has the perfect traits for it, but obviously not a good unique unit.

Anyway I'd basically suggest anyone but Greece :)

I am not signing up as I current attempting AW at emperor.

However, other good civs are:
Persia - Who is scientific and Industrious.
Don't knock the power of double speed workers. You will be pressed for military support and getting more work done with fewer workers really helps the unit count.

Of course, who can argue with immortals?

Germany has the perfect traits for it, but obviously not a good unique unit.

I agree with Sirp on this one, but I am not sure if it is for the same reasons. I actually like the Panzer, but the unit appears to late. AW is decided before then. If you survive to rails with coal and iron and are close in tech, the game is over. I prefer a good ancient or early middle age unit.

Another great civ would be Japan. Religious mean quick transition to Monarchy, and cheap temples. If you wrap the game up with a domination attempt the cheap temples will really be appreciated. The Samurai is an excellent offensive unit and defends well after capturing a city.

I'll play, I haven't done AW before
mmmm...Vanilla Root Beer...

I have no preference for Civ, although given a choice of those already mentioned, I'd probably vote Germany, simply because I rarely play them (I've played Persia and Japan a lot--but I don't mind playing them some more :) )

OK, so we won't try the Greeks:D

I agree that the UU of the Germans it too late, the game will be well over by then.

I like the Persians, the UU is nice and the traits are useful, but we may have a despotism golden age.

I'm not sure about the Japanese as we will only be changing governments once (to monarchy) and cheep libraries are better than cheep temples.

So unless anybody has any complaints I will go for Persians.

Any ides what level we should play at? I am favouring Monarchy, but we could always make it easier:)

I need to finish off GOTM19 (I'm still at 1000BC) so I'll start the game a bit later on in the week. There is still romm for one more.

I haven't tried an Always War recently, so I'm in. Either Persia or Germany would be fine with me. Persia would be a strong non-militarist civ for the scenario, while Germany would provide an extra challenge with no early uber unit to lean on.

I created the start postiton for the Persians last night, but I didn't get chance to post it. I'll do that tonight. I started a normal map on monarch

amirsan - I think its going to be quite hard as it is. A little experience would be more than useful:) The trainer bit is for those with no experience at AW. When I play civ I am normally a builder and getting into early wars is hard for me. I'm hoping this will start to break me of the habbit:D

*bump*

*bump* means he is "bumping" the post back up onto the top of thread listing, think because it appears to have died off....

I would play, I haven't done an AW scenario and they sound fun but I wont have the time to play much for the forseeable future ;/

I would like to join if the roster isn't already full. I've been meaning to try an AW for a while and I like the idea of around Monarch or Regent level.
