I got an absolutely dream start playing The Deity Challenge Line-up #35 - Siam OCC, got population from a hut then Writing just after Pottery, followed by a cultural hut to help grab Tradition followed by Aristocracy (for the wonder building bonus) , and with a chops managed to finish the Great Library on turn 27 followed by a bee-line for Petra, which with a few more chops was completed on turn 65.

As I was the only Civ which had Tradition at that point, I then finished the Hanging Gardens as well as the Oracle.

You can't get a Deity start like that without a lot of luck. I figured I might use the opportunity to try a Deity domination. I figured all I have to do it pop all the capitals. As it's OCC and they autoraze, I don't actually need to hold them.

I made a beeline for Education, and after I got there, switched to beeline for Chemistry, popping Chemistry early with Oxford.

Then it was Cannon time. The Assyrians were my first target, it was around turn 160. They had 6-7 cities, but my cannons had easy access to his capital, it feel. He shortly after sued for peace.

Earlier in the game, the Assyrians had destroyed the Greeks, and had taken Athens. Ashurbanipal was kind enough to grant me open borders in the same turn of the cease fire, I immediately used his roads to match to Athens. Just over 10 turns later I attacked again, taking Athens.

I had a look at the victory progress screen, and it now showed that the Assyrians were holding their original capital. Looking at the map it was clear they had rebuilt Assur at in the exact same spot. It wasn't a capital now but it did count toward "original capital" on the Domination Victory screen.

I then realised my strategy would be a never ending game of whack-o-mole, as civs rebuilt their razed capitals.

So, is there anyway to stop civs rebuilding their capital for purposes of domination in an OCC game?

If I whack a unit on the spot, will that do the trick? Or do I have to stop my opponent from building any new cities, as will any rebuilt city will count as the original capital?

AFAIK, you only need to capture=raze their original capitals, so no need to go conquering their secondary cities / new capitals.

As a minor request, please add something like DCL #35 spoiler to the thread title or wrap the spoiler parts in spoiler tags (I think in your case just the name of other civs)

That doesn't seem to be the case. See below the rebuilt Assur (it's obviously rebuilt as its cultural radius is so small and it is no longer "starred" as the capital.

Yet, it still counts towards Domination on the Victory Screen:

Any else experienced this?

Damn, that s weird weird. No idea what s going on there.

I hope you kept an older save so you get the chance to gor for another victory type with that amazing start.

It's still possible that you'll get domination after razing the capitals, and that the interface just isn't updated correctly. I guess if you start a chieftain occ on a duel map it should be quite trivial to check?

I suspect if a city is built on its previous tile, it takes up the previous name and original capital status for domination purposes. Keeping a unit on the tile seems to prevent this (I suggest doing this until they rebuild within 3 hexes of the original capital at which point they can't settle the square anyway)

Did you figure out if the re-appearing caps was really going to lock you out of a DomV? Did you try ignoring them and going after all the original caps? On-screen prompts notwithstanding, I think it is just artifice. Check out this post from DCL 36 where peddroelm leave Constantinople with Ragusa!

I've tried duplicating this , but in two attempts (duel with 2 enemies) the AI refused to resettle the capital. Maybe a multiplayer test would be easier...
