Blast from explosives shipment rocks Chinese city of Tianjin

A massive explosion rocked a key industrial area in the northeastern Chinese city of Tianjin late Wednesday night, according to Chinese media.

State broadcaster China Central Television reported on its official microblog that the blast erupted in a shipment of explosives at a container berth in the Binhai New Area at about 11.30pm on Wednesday.

An unknown number of people were injured and rushed to hospital, the report said.

Holy crap! In that second video you can see a big brick wall literally disintegrating and flying towards the camera! Looks like something out of hollywood. :wow:

Really hope there weren't many people in the area.

If it happened in an industrial area, I guess we can hope that not too many people were too close to the explosion...

Still, I found tweets with pictures like these:

:(

It reminds me of the PEPCON explosion in Nevada. Scary stuff.

Lame.

Not anywhere close to magnificent most glorious mushroom cloud nukey nuke boom.

Wiki already has it listed as the 7th largest conventional explosion.

Event Location Date Approximate yield
N1 launch explosion Baikonur Cosmodrome Site 110 3 July 1969 7 kt of TNT (29 TJ)
Minor Scale and Misty Picture White Sands Missile Range 27 June 1985; 14 May 1987 4.8 kt of TNT (20 TJ)
Royal Navy test Heligoland 18 April 1947 3.2 kt of TNT (13 TJ)
Halifax Explosion Halifax, Nova Scotia 6 December 1917 2.9 kt of TNT (12 TJ)
Texas City disaster Texas City, Texas 16 April 1947 2.7-3.2 kt of TNT (11–13 TJ)
Evangelos Florakis Naval Base explosion Cyprus 11 July 2011 2-3.2 kt of TNT (9–13 TJ)
2015 Tianjin explosion Tianjin 12 August 2015 2,1 kt of TNT (? TJ)
Port Chicago disaster Port Chicago, California 17 July 1944 1.6-2.2 kt of TNT (7–9 TJ)

It is estimated to be 2.1 times the size of the PEPCON explosion.

It is also now believed to be the result of 2 separate blasts:

On 12 August 2015, an explosion, which was believed to consist of two separate blasts occurred at a petrol storage station in the Chinese city of Tianjin, in the Port of Tianjin in the Binhai New Area.[2] The cause of the explosion is currently unknown, but media reports that it is most likely to be an industrial accident.[2] Later, an Associated Press story on MSN stated in an update that the initial blast, at least, was from hazardous and dangerous unspecified materials in shipping containers at a plant warehouse for a logistics company, named Ruihai Logistics according to state sources.[3]

Well, here's why:

On 12 August 2015, at 23:30, two explosions occurred in the Chinese port city of Tianjin at a warehouse operated by Ruhai logistics. The China Earthquake Networks Center reported the first blast was equivalent to 3 tonnes TNT, the second 21 tonnes TNT. Initial reports were of 50 deaths and over 700 injured.[77]
24 tonnes of TNT is hardly 2.1 kt. Their first estimate was off by nearly a factor of 100.

So this wasn't all that large of an explosion at all. It also explains why there were thousands killed.

How big was the largest ever conventional boom?

I would like to try and set a new Guinness world record.

It is listed right there 3 posts above yours.

N1 launch explosion Baikonur Cosmodrome Site 110 3 July 1969 7 kt of TNT (29 TJ)
It was approximately half the yield of the Hiroshima atomic bomb.

When I saw it, my first though was well someone decided to play out a Tom Clancy scenario/novel in real life.

This is still my favorite cellphone video of an explosion so far. Notice how close they are so they can be sure to get a great view of the impending explosion.

Language warning: NSFW.

EDIT: These photos appear to show greater damage than what 24 tons of TNT would cause. I wouldn't be surprised if the estimate was revised again. It is very lucky this occurred at night when there were so few workers in the vicinity.:
