Yeah, those of you who average 2 minute turns or less are freakishly impressive to me. Obviously the early turns can be pretty quick. But once the late game hits, I feel like the enemy turns take a full minute all on their own, and I can easily waste 2 minutes debating with myself on what to build or research next.

Do you fast playing people automate much, or is it really just being decisive and quick.

I play on very low graphical settings to speed up enemy's turns. Also sometimes i play in strategic mode (f10) to speed it up even more.

AI turns are pretty quick if you turn both quick combat/movement and no animations. They're only slower if you play in the late game on huge maps. Usually per turn time is slower on domination if you have a huge amount of units to manage. Some players play with fewer units and will have faster turn time.

I was wondering why my games took so darn long. I love the animations though, I turn them on full blast and love watching the whole thing play out like a movie. IDK why, it just feels more like work and less like a game when I don't have the animations on. I grew up with Civ II, and back then had a really crappy computer, and now with good graphics on Civ V and a computer I built myself I need to see every last battle and troop movement. Which of course doubles my game time since my computer has so much work to do...

It also helps to learn the hotkeys.

I do wonder how people can do that many turns in that little time. Obviously the pc has some barring on that, but probably only a half hour across 100 turns

Sclb has most the answer - no animations and very low unit count. My PC is six years old, and the turns at the end of the game can chug a bit. I tend to have just enough units to prevent the other nations DOW'ing me and picket them on sentry, so I spend very little time on unit moves. If I don't avoid wars, I don't tend to survive long enough to post a GOTM result.

I play fast because otherwise my young son gets in the way. :) But thinking about it, I also don't like micromanagement too much. I go tall and only 4 cities max. I don't run a religion (saving time on missionaries) and let the computer manage most of my cities and specialists (except for the capital). I do like painting the map with workers; I could automate workers I guess, but I've been doing them manually since 1992. As GOTM is a speedrun, the optimal tech/build path is fairly clear, but I've played so much civ that my decision making on games in my comfort zone is fast. Put me in a Emperor domination game and watch my out-of-practice game fall apart fast too!

We definitely all have our preferred style of play :) interesting that you choose not to use religion. I would think that the lack of faith bought GP would be a hinderance to all but Domination VC. Granted in immortal and deity you have a significantly lower chance to get a religion.

I think you can still faith buy great people as long as the city has a religion even you don't found one.

Once you get one of the AI's religions, you can buy missionaries to spread it to your other cities and you get whatever pantheon and follower beliefs they chose, and some of the reformation beliefs. Thus you can get the faith buildings for happiness, faith and culture and the happiness from shrines/temples as well as faith buying science buildings. All depending on which AI's religion your city is following.

You can buy every faith people except for great prophets if you don't found. Usually if you have 3-4 piety civs close by, founding is a lot less interesting, as it will be difficult to keep the religion even if you found, and it might be hard to found in the first place.
