I need help from those of you who are competent at making artwork with creating for me or loaning me icons that might fit with the buildings introduced within the Era Buildings mod I am creating.

Or: Icons! Icons! My Kingdom for Icons!

These are the buildings that are introduced in the mod:

  1. Please don't be put off by the length of the buildings-list. In many cases one icon could be used to cover the entire 'set' of building-types.
    • For example, I am currently using the in-game art for the granary for all the "City-Growth" buildings. While this is fine for the earlier eras, as example, something a little more appropo to the later eras would be nice for, say, the Industrial and later eras for a building that adds food in the city
  2. What I am looking for at the current time is (in terms of building icons):
    • Any icons you may have already made that might fit for one of these buildings, or that might fit to cover the entire line of buildings, for Ancient Era to Information Era
    • Icons you may have made but never ended using, to give such an icon a 'home'
    • Willingness to create an icon or two that would still be needed after "a" and "b" have been exhausted. But obviously this would only apply after permissions and offers of work already done have run their course, and then only if a smallish number of icons is still needed. By 'smallish' I mean no more than three or four: I don't want anyone to spend anything like the kind of time that would be required to create individual new icons for all these buildings.
    • Particularly I am hoping someone has or is willing to create an icon or two that would fit with the 'Naval' buildings, as I am currently just using some unit and tech icons.
    • As mentioned, please hold off on doing anything yet as regards "c" and "d" until the result from art-capable forum members is known so far as loaning existing artwork.

  • Full credit of course will be made to the original creators of such artwork.
  • Feel free to badger me with questions or for further explanation of what a (for example) 'Haberdashery' or a 'Millinery' is/does if you think you have an existing icon that might work, but have no earthly idea what one of those is or what the in-game function is. It is better to know sometimes what a building does or is in evaluating whether an existing icon would 'fit'.

One final request which would earn my deep gratitude would be if someone were able to make a 'cover' image for the mod like those JFD has for the mercenaries mod, and Pouakai/Janboruta have for the Enlightenment Era mod. And if this is a really huge huge task to do (and it may be given my complete incompetence at such things), feel free to just tell me to AssignStartingPlots.lua with this last desire.

Notes:
  • At whoward's suggestion I have updated the mod to make use of the unused Supermarket Icon for the Industrial Era and later "City Growth" buildings
  • Calcul8or has been gracious enough to allow me to use some icons he had made for another project, but which never seemed to have gotten used. I've noted where I intend to use the ones made available. And I'll have to think through where one icon can do some 'double-duty'.

For example, I am currently using the in-game art for the granary for all the "City-Growth" buildings. Isn't there an unused supermarket icon in the game?

Hmm....looks like I'll have to use dragon and take a closer look at what is in the firaxis icon-files.

Yes, that will do well-enough for the food-type later-era buildings. Thanks for putting me onto that. I'll have to update the OP to take that into account after I have lunch-time here.

I have some icons that may fit the need. I'll connect when I'm home.
Thanks, man. I've outlined in the OP where I currently think I can make use of the icons in that set. Just have to think about where I can make the most of what you've provided by using one icon for 'double-duty' or 'triple-duty'.

What have you got so far LeeS? also the double or triple duty ones got be colorfied to differentiate
or not depending on your personal preference of course :)
I updated the info in the spoiler of the OP as to which icons from the set Calul8or provided as to where I think I can use them. And I noted the in-game icons I am using in the "Growth" buildings. Otherwise I don't have 'new' unique icons for anything -- just the ones you've been seeing in-game from the existing art made by Firaxis.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm also considering changing the names of Apothacary and Reliquary in the "Science" line since the one sounds like it ought to be a 'hospital' sort of thing, and I think maybe too many people will associate "Reliquary" with something faith-linked.

Also, I see Enlightenment Era is using a "DryDock" so I think I'll come up with a different name for that building as well, though there won't be any change to the in-game function.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

onmy6, I also PM'd you with a little more info

I did manage to come up with an icon for the ball court that doesn't look too horrible:
Spoiler :
ByPRs5x.jpg
I used an exisiting image (:mischief:) and then used whoward's unit-maker mod tool to convert the image to a usable dds image. This image is the 256-size icon re-converted into a jpg format.

Hey, I may be able to pay you back, at least a little, for all the help you've given me. It looks like Calcul8or has you covered for a lot of them, but if you need more, I'm happy to lend a hand.

I would just hop in and start making icons, but as per your instructions in the OP, I'll wait for a response as to what I should do.

Looking through some of my own icons, I do have one that would work for a Church:
6NpWW5y.png

I'm going to be using it in an upcoming civ of mine, but you're more than welcome to use it as well.

Also, I made this Icon for a car factory, for a person looking to create an Ontario civ a while ago, but they haven't been active in a long time, and I'm pretty sure that project has been put on ice.

And then this is an icon for a ballroom I'm using for one of my civs. I don't know if it's usable to you for anything (maybe the playhouse?), but you're welcome to it if it is.

I would just hop in and start making icons, but on the chance that I'm doing something Calcul8or's already done, but it hasn't been updated in the OP, I'll wait for a response as to what I should do.
Current state of what I have new custom icons for is as currently shown in the OP. Anything where nothing is specified for an atlas and image reference I've been using in-game icons. I think the loaning of pre-made icons has pretty much run its course (thank you so very much Calcul8or!)
  1. I'm becoming more and more dis-satisfied with the in-game name I am using as "Apothacary" and "Reliquary" as mentioned up a couple of posts, so I wouldn't at this point even give any thought or effort to either of those.
  2. But if you would be willing to work on coastal/naval building icon(s) so that one icon could be shared between "Boilermaker"/"Naval Yard", one icon could be shared between "Shipyard"/"Shipwright", and one between "Ropemaker"/"Cablemaker"/"Sailmaker" that would be super. Just let me know what you'd be willing to tackle.
  3. Let me know if a little further info on where I came up with these building-names would be helpful:
    • "Boilermaker" comes from the fact that as navies became industrialized and adopted oil-fired boilers to generate the heat that was used in essentially closed-loop steam-turbines, it became important to have large scale manufacturing concerns that specialised in constructing this sort of ship-sized oil-fired boiler.
      Boilermaker
It's a little hard to see but they're inserting a more mid-20th-century boiler into a ship
    • "Naval Yard" I was originally going to call a "Dry Dock", but that is being used in Enlightenment Era and also I think there are a plethora of other "Dry Dock" buildings running around on Steam workshop. But I think anything that would show the industrial-scale manufacturing facility needed to make ship-sized oil boilers could also be used to represent a Naval Yard. If you have an idea that would more closely fit with the concept of "Naval Yard" but not "Boilermaker" that's fine too and I'll just adapt the name for the earlier era's building to something more fitting.
      Naval Yard
Either of the two pictures in this image would work for either/or/and Naval Yard and Boiler Maker.
    • "Shipyard"/"Shipwright" would be to represent the wooden sail ship manufacturing that resulted in Ships of the Line and the like
      Shipyard
      Shipwright
    • "Ropemaker"/"Cablemaker"/"Sailmaker" would be representative of the methods used in the ancient times and up through the medieval/early-renaissance of dudes sitting or standing around on a dockside or beach area sewing sails together or weaving them and stretching hemp etc into 'rope' and later naval quality 'cables'.

  4. Anything you'd be willing to do and have time for I'd be appreciative.
I might decide to swap the eras for the shipwright/shipyard usage, but wouldn't affect any icon really. Especially as these could probably be shared anyway.

I like the church and the ballroom especially. The ballroom one would work well enough for the playhouse if people don't look too close (as in why all the dancing if they're putting on Shakespeare :) )
And the car factory would fit pretty well with the Assembly Plant.

Yeah, sure, I'd be happy to tackle the navel buildings. It's getting a bit late here, so I'll get started on the icons tomorrow, but I found a few pictures coloured pictures I think would be good to use and Ifigured I might just run by you really quick.

Sailmaker (the men in the more modern uniforms would be cropped out):

Boilermaker (hopefully won't be so grainy when shrunk down and put through a filter):
Spoiler :

Truth be told, I couldn't find a good, coloured picture of a boilermaker that didn't have a guy with a modern welding torch and welding mask. I just googled "Industrial Revolution painting", and this one sort of looks like there are boilers in there.

Ooooo, Shiney! Any of those 'iconized' would fit the bill I would think, and probably better than the images I managed to find. Your Jedi Google-Powers are superior to mine, I guess.

The only thing I would also suggest with the sailmaker image would be to also crop out the portholes (or obscure them somehow). Maybe just use the center portion of the image with the women sewing and maybe the guy kinda above and behind them doing whatever it is he's supposed to be doing in that image.

The image you found for the Boilermaker would actually have worked for the Industrial Era splash screen better than the one Firaxis used, in my opinion.

Alright, figured I'd once again run something by you, so that I can adjust, if needed, for the rest of the icons. Thoughts on this for the Ropemaker? Any changes you want made?

It's perfect, really. Captures the feel of the 'ancient' era, while showcasing the process of ropemaking.

Thanks! I'll update again when I have the rest of the icons done.
