The Reins of History, back in the hands of Man.
-Dr. Cid, Final Fantasy XII

Welcome to a [title TBD], a NESIOT (or whatever it's called these days) set in an alternate 18th century. In this world, Tsar Simeon of Bulgaria was successful in his attempt to siege Constantinople in the early 10th century. In the following centuries, Magyars migrated north, and Slavs west, strangling Germany in its cradle. Normans unified England and France into one realm, only to ultimately split it in two. Leon conquered the New World, only to lose it as their home was conquered by Moors. Descendants of Crusaders rule Egypt and Zoroastrians remain in Persia, but both realms have become beacons of tolerance and plurality as the entire Middle East thrives in an intellectual blossoming on a scale never before seen in human history. And perhaps most of all, outside a small sliver of Northern Asia, the name "Mongol" elicits nothing but a few, confused reactions, for no one has heard it.

Now, the year is 1720, and the world is hurtling towards the brink of some great, indescribable revolution, completely unknown to its people, yet still haunting it like a spectre.

---

Anyway, that concludes the obligatory dramatic introduction.

My goal with this was to do an early modern game with a somewhat esoteric timeline that allows for a great number of possibilities for where this world can be taken in. I want to explore a world where the clash between tradition and modernity runs very strong, and also a world where Europe is decidedly not the centre of the world. With the help of some others on chat, the background has been filled in some detail; I'll be posting it over the next few days.

Firstly, I'd like to thank EQandcivfanatic from whom much of the ruleset was gleefully looted from, and also Bair_the_Normal, Reus, thomas.berubeg, and Tolni for their help with the setup and backgrounds. As such they get first choice in country selection. Apologies to everyone else, but with how much their input helped, I only felt it was fair.
---

Now, in regards to selecting countries, I ask you (unless you're on the above list) to please list 3-5 of your top choices in preferential order. I don't want formal applications or anything because I don't feel those are particularly necessary, just a list. As I said, I'll be posting backgrounds and such over the next few days; feel free to ask me questions in the meantime! If you're new, I'm honoured you looked at my game firstly, and secondly if you'd like to talk to me for help I'm always happy to!

I'm on IOTchat fairly frequently, or CFC PMs work just as well. Trust me, no question you ask is stupid.

This is still a bit too early for any sort of "great power" system to exist but if I had to pick ones, Albion, Francia, Sigurdia, Egypt, Persia, Abdalid Empire, Bihar, Myanmar, Sunda, Xing would be them. If you're not experienced I do suggest that you avoid picking these. In addition, if you're used to playing western countries, I do encourage you to try something elsewhere. I won't force you to (and Europe is just as interesting as the rest of the world!) but it would be great to get a healthy amount of players in the Middle East and Asia.

In any case, there's about 70 countries, and I intend to make all of them interesting - even the small ones. Plenty to go around! I might make some minor changes to the map, and I can be convinced to change some names, but this is relatively final.

Here's a labelled map:

Is this related to [insert other game here]?

No; I've been working on this on and off since about July, as people on chat can probably attest to from my endless spamming of maps. I'm launching this now since this is a time I can feel comfortable doing so.

When is this going to launch?

My finals end on 18 December. In the meantime I'll be working on backgrounds and stats, with the intent of launching sometime in the days immediately after that. So even if you're not sure if you have time right now, this won't launch immediately, so don't worry.

I assure you this is not a quick flash game; there has been a fair lot of work put into this and I'm committed to this for the long term. This is the kind of project I've been wanting to run for quite a while.

For that matter: the turns will be 3 years each. The first will be 1720-1722, the second 1723-1725, the third 1726-1728, and so forth. Updates will likely be about 2-3 weeks apart, probably on the latter end of that scale if I have a ton of work.

As I told you earlier, would looove to play Scandinavia. :) I'd love to do something similar to what I did for TNESIV, where I mixed renaissance/enlightenment music with Scandinavian folk harmonics.

I know, I know, you don't accept applications. Chances are that if I get the Meskwaki I'll still be quite happy. EDIT I'm just most probably not able to create music for the other cultures. (Scandinavian folk runs through my blood man, the movement minor 7th to 1st is like crack to me) EDITEDIT: Ugh sorry, no applications, I know! Don't mind me. Anyone listen to the piece I made if you feel like it. I swear I will compose at least one piece regardless of what I get. This is not a plea for Scandinavia, it is rather EXCITEMENT! for all of you to feel :)
