Civilization 5 - Game of the Month Training Series Game 131
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\//////////////////////////////////////////

Welcome to the 131st game in the GOTM V Training Series! This Series will allow new and old GOTM fans to try out these features from Civ5's expansions and DLCs in a friendly environment. Participants are encouraged to post questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads (described below). Each game will specify the Civ you will play and the Victory Condition to strive for. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread.

Must Read!
We would like to ask you to abide by our most sacred rule: Don’t replay any turns! If you make a mistake, accept it and try to recover. To ensure fair play and prevent results exclusions, please set your Autosaves to 1 turn. In the event of a computer crash while playing, just reload to the previous save and play it as closely to how you played it the first time. Please let Leif, Hammer Rabbi or me know (either in the forums or through Private Message) if you experienced a crash and how many turns you replayed.

Information about threads associated with each individual TSG -- Must Read if you are new to our Game of the Month!
Spoiler :
Please note: If you wish to make a video of your game, please do not post any links to it until after the game submission date has passed. This is because of the potential spoilers that are created by posting before the end date. Thank you for your cooperation.

TSG Announcement thread (this one): This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don’t be afraid to ask questions). It’s also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Please don’t post any game-related info once you open and play the save. Instead use the next thread.

Opening Actions thread: This thread is used to discuss the game's opening decisions and strategies through the first 100 or so turns. Here you can post questions related to the game and share your achievements/anger/frustration/victories while you play. We encourage players to use the spoiler tags for screenshot. During the time the game is active, please do not post any information concerning the game outside of the spoiler threads including screen shots, videos, or recorded/live-cast Let's Plays on other websites.

After Actions thread: In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state your victory/loss date (preferably in the post title) and describe your path to glory in this post! Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after one month, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.

Results and Congratulations thread: We will create a separate thread with the results at the end of the one month submission period (sorted by earliest date and highest score ). We will issue a medal to the top winner (based on earliest date finished for each VC). There are no long-term records kept for these results, they are just given out to top finishers to reward their efforts.

File Upload System
We have a game file upload system you can find here. Please use it to upload your completed first attempt by saving the game on the turn after your victory or defeat. (by using the "lemme play one more turn" feature) Please note: you must submit your game on the turn following Victory. If you continue to play, the game overwrites the data and your submission could be rejected by the submission system.

This game runs for a month and ends April 15th, 2016.

The save will be available for download on March 15th, 2016 midnight Central Standard time (UTC -6:00) in the US.

The Save can be found here.

Ooooh.... Tasty! I love OCC!

Let's see: settle in place, beeline writing, while building monument and a worker, plant the scientist, take Tradition, build GL, beeline Maths to get to Currency before GL finishes (otherwise take Philosophy), build HG, build Petra, finish Tradition...

Policies: full on Tradition, open Commerce, full on Rationalism, get to Scholasticism in Patronage (probably not possible), go Freedom to take "Buy spaceship parts with gold".

???

Profit!

Edit: might be a good idea to tuck in a shrine for Desert Folklore-based religion for buying those scientists with Faith later on

It looks pretty obvious that we'll all be settling in place. After that, every choice becomes critical and I plan to actually think long and hard before making decisions.

In OCC, what happens if we capture an enemy capital?

Science Victory with Babylon should be fairly easy. Like others have said, better not miss Petra!

There will be many GS. How many should be academy and how many should bulb? IS a Wonder with GS points better than some of the growth wonders?

20 CS again?

Well you may consider planting at most 3-4, while making Scholasticism a priority as well as getting the bonus from RAs up quickly. On Emperor it may still be at least somewhat viable. Your trade routes will all go towards city states anyways.

I suggest the following, plant the GS, build Monument or Shrine, Granary, ToA, GL, then HG and Petra and you should take off from there.

The quandary is that there aren't that many "no-brainer" locations for academies -- the couple of visible sheep tiles would be good (as long as you get a a stable done before planting on the second one), but virtually everything else will "cost" 2 yield for most of the game (post-Civil Service farm yield on most tiles, given the abundance of rivers).

Of course, if the decisions were easy or automatic, where would be the challenge?

Yeah, I agree on the TOA first, since it's emperor it'll be a chore to try and get both TOA and GL but with enough DOW's it shouldn't be somewhat doable. That 10% growth will be far nicer than a free tech though (Especially with Petra), but the Great Scientist point is really important also so they both need to be on the menu. I'd throw oracle in after or before Petra, for another great scientist point. The more the merrier with those. I need to find more GS points.

Edit: I checked, only two GS point wonders in the early game and those are Great Library and Oracle, so those should be built ASAP and the national epic shortly after. Here are the lists I checked:

http://civilization.wikia.com/wiki/Wonders_(Civ5)

That's almost 5 necessary wonders in the first 100 turns with TOA, GL, HG, Petra, and Oracle. I'm going to try and throw Colossus in there too unless I have a few cranky neighbors that want to exploit my lack of units due to wonder-spam. Once I hit medieval though, I should be able to horde all the good wonders for myself without any problem with the crazy science game I will have. This may be my first pre-200 science game!

Academy can go on an Oasis right?

Everybody is gonna turtle, but its only emperor. Imagine all the sweet bullying, especially if a 'tough guy' is close.

Well, despite great, super OP start, it's still OCC, so I don't think so ;)

Yeah, I was thinking that right after I submitted it, No Expos will kill my science harder than any population buff can raise it. Maybe turn 250?

I think that unfortanately in this case you will 'destroy' oasis.

Well, I'm not going to risk THAT so I will let someone else experiment...

I'm auctioning mine off to the highest bidder like I always do, Babylon will be the trade hub of the world so I can buy buildings and units so the production queue can be free for wonder-spamming. The city states never give me enough gold, and with no internal trade routes to help boost population I've got to get the maximum power out of those things.
