BOTM 115: Tokugawa of Japan.

Hello. This is DynamicSpirit, with a special message to the AIs playing in this game. It's a deity game which is really nice for you because it'll mean you'll be able to stomp all over the human player with ease. I know you're not very intelligent so I've tried to help you a bit. The human doesn't have a particularly useful unique unit, and he'll probably be dead long before he's able to build his unique building. Goody huts are on, so you'll be able to pick up lots of nice things from those. The human probably won't dare touch them after the first one because of the fear of unleashing hordes of warriors. Be aware that the barbs DO NOT start with archery, so you'll only encounter barb warriors at first. So if you wanna use your free starting archers to take lots of barb cities, feel free. Though I guess on deity, you'll expand quickly enough that there won't be many barb cities anyway. I'll be pretty disappointed in you guys if you haven't managed to wipe out the human before 1000AD. But be careful - these humans can be very cunning and resourceful.

Just remember to have fun! (Because the human probably won't ;) )

Game settings:
Playing as: Tokugawa of Japan
Rivals: 4 AIs
Difficulty: Deity
Starting Era: Ancient
Speed: Normal
Options: No random events
Victory Conditions: All enabled

Map settings:
Map: Great plains
World Wrap: None
Mapsize: Small
Climate: Temperate
Sea level: Medium

Tokugawa is Protective and Aggressive, and you start with Fishing and The Wheel.

The Protective trait gives free City Garrison I and Drill I promotion for archery and gunpowder units and double production speed of Castle and Walls

The Aggressive trait gives free Combat I promotion for melee and gunpowder units and double production speed of Barracks and Drydock

Unique unit: Samurai (replaces Maceman)
The Samurai benefits from: 2 first strikes, requires access to iron, and free promotions: drill1. This compares with the Maceman which has: 0 first strikes, and requires access to copper or iron.

Unique Building: Shale Plant (replaces Coal Plant)
Besides providing power (and -2 health), the shale plant gives an extra 10% hammers.

While playing...

Remember - for your entry to be accepted, it MUST be your first attempt to play this game, and you MUST NOT replay any turns. If you make a mistake while playing, you have to live with it, learn from it, and carry on the game without replaying.

We will open 'spoiler' threads during the month for players to discuss what happens in their games. Do not discuss any details of your game outside those threads.

That start looks really green and food-heavy compared to what I'd expect from Great Plains. I think Toku will have his fun.

Not often would you want hunting as starting tech, but here yup ;)
Corn is uninteresting for now, and researching Agri before AH veery annoying.

I wonder if hunting first & building a scout can pay with goody huts on?

If I remember correctly, the shale plant doesn't require coal to function?

Oh deer, I'll have to learn hunting to catch beavers. With my luck the jungle will overgrow the corn, pig or beaver before I can build improvements. And once i manage to build something, a barb rush will pillage everything and then the jungle will grow. I may eventually discover iron only to find the AI's have settled over every deposit.

How long before animals appear to eat the warrior? With luck he may survive long enough to be killed by 2-legged predators, maybe by turn 10?

I might SIP (and later discover a resource on the starting PH) or move and discover the hill is just plain plains.
And just to be kind on the AI, the mapmaker didn't give us stone on the PH.
This is one way of keeping the games short .

For those of you not winning pre-CS+Mach, a possibly little-known feature of the Samurais: they not only start with Drill I, but also, unlike normal melee, can promote all the way to Drill IV, yielding 5-8 first strikes. Attack that monster you flimsy AIs.

... - these humans can be very cunning and resourceful.
 I'm hoping that this means human area is full of resources.

They will just use some mounted unit that is immune to first strikes. :(

It's not that uncommon on the right side of the GP map

sounds like a very good idea, lady, especially with furs and deer as well. Also, early archery may not be a bad idea as barbs can be quite an issue on GP maps, although not sure how a "small" version will play out, but there is a lot of land.

with furs and AH beeline, may be able to head straight to alpha

huts will probably fall quickly

Great introduction! Thanks DynamicSpirit. I'm scared already.

I think on Deity most goody huts will be gone by the time a Scout has been built the slow way.

what's with all the double posts? :mischief:

Actually GP is not a standard map script. It can give very unusual starts...even some with no resources at all. Kinda like Oasis. So jungle in BFC is not out of the question at all on the East side of map. I've rolled tons of GP maps for HOF.

Oh..and flood plain corn is possible on GP map in the far West.

4 AIs or 5 AIs? This page says 4, download page says 5...

Oh, and I read some threads on which leaders are good for the Great Plains map. Not surprisingly, Toku never got mentioned

:scan: The download page says:
Difficulty: Chieftain :crazyeye:
I guess even I might survive this if it were true...

Edit: Oh, the Chieftain difficulty is meant for the AI. That makes sense.

He he! Sorry, the download page was incorrect. I've fixed it now. It's deity level, and 4 AIs - exactly as it says in this thread. (The download page was auto-generated based on an incorrect starting save. I'd neglected to update it when I fixed the starting save prior to announcing the game)

Funny that, isn't it :)

Oh, modesty is the very strongest of my many, many strengths. You'll never catch me vaunting my sheer brilliance in public (such as on an Internet forum). I'm too modest to show off like that. I far prefer to do amazing things and create amazing games without ever seeking to draw attention to the fact.

PS. Did I mention how handsome I am? I probably wouldn't have mentioned it coz of being modest and not wanting to show off. ;)
