We are experiencing a high volume of NES's opening at the same time this week and last week. This may cause non-posting in many NES's that are currently opening. It is also causing a freak-clone of the same NES over and over again.

I ask that we hold off for a week before posting another NES, so we can adapt to what we have. Opening too many at once causes saturation (as plexus puts it) and it will cause deaths of a few old NES's that we so sorely need to continue on past the iron age. We also need to hault the cloning. At least make up a rule for your new nes, do not use the same old ones over and over. Add one or two. Add to the community.

Comments, concurences or non-concurences please post.

Jason

I completely agree. I have had to close an NES within the last week and I am very close to closing another because of this.

These NESes are, for the most part, just variations upon stJNES4/any other 4kBC NES. It needs to stop before any more NESes are closed due to it.

i concure. while i admire the desire of indiviguals to start their own nes i feel that there are entirely too many out there. one of the things i'm struck with is number of new nes's ran by new mods. i have great respect for the eagerness of the new players and yes i was one (not too long ago, and had nowhere near the confidence that these guys have) i was told that a good rule of thumb is to play in an NES for at least a month before attempting to mod, this gives you a good basis in the games and much more experience. i guess in the end all i'm trying to say is, Jason you are right.

i agree especially on the cloning we are seeing teh demise of boardgame nes's again because people are just cloning

Completely agree. I remember when I first joined, there were at most 6 quality NESes going on. Whenever someone (besides sheep) started an NES, it was guarranteed to go at least 10 pages. When newbie mods completely failed, they'd wait a lil' while before they tried again. Veteran mods would wiat for space to clear up before they started their own. Now? A new NES is started every single day, seemingly, and it's the same 4-5 people, over and over again. People don't care about how many other NESes there are or other mods at all, they just do plunge in without thinking. There are so many NESes started, that are exactly the same as Stjnes4 started by Newbie mods, that in my opinion, actually take away from the more established NESes. Usually, 2-3 veteran players out of 15 or so will be itnerested, and they'll quit the more succefull one's, driving them to death, only to find that their new favorite will be closed within 3 days because the rookie mod got bored and decided to start a new one, with the exact same rules. This is getting stupid. I don't want to sound superior, I remember when I was first a newbie, and how it felt, but comeon. When I first came, you could easily be in 90% of the NESes available. Even if you didn't like some of them, you'd easily turn in orders, and the NES would live. Now? I think it's damn near impossible. As I said, don't want to sound haughty, but the new posters here really are starting to annoy me. Is it so hard to wait one (or even half of one) month before starting a new NES? Is it so hard to come up with your own little rules? It's getting pretty stupid, and I fully agree. NO MORE NESES FOR 1 WEEK. Just so people can see how succesful a forum can be without new NESes popping up every 2 days.

only other thing I wanted to add is how few quality made NESes there are.

To be honest:

- stPumaNES
- stJNES4
- stJNES5
- stAMNES
- st444NES
- MinionNES
- 1 or 2 I'm sure to have forgotten, but you know what I mean

are the only NESes that are worth joining for now. The sad thing is that there are about 7 others floating around that have crappy maps, crappy management, stupid updates, redundant rules, and only 3 players on completely different parts of the world.

we could try to get organized. make a poll as to how many games we (as a forum) think there should be at any one point, and then make a Waiting list thread, where you have to wait for your turn to start a game.

it would definetly cut down the "dead before it starts" games.
it could alienate new players/mods though.
and it would be realy tough to inforce.
forget i said anything at all.

as for this post.

i agree, there are too many new games. During the last 2 weeks i've though a few times of starting a new game (remember the gladiator rules i posted at some point), but there have been so many "active" games that i decided against it.

what i do think would be a good rule of thumb is to force every new game to list how many players it needs before starting and not let it start untill that many players are in (maybe +-1).
because a lot of games are designed for 7 players or something, only get 3 at first, and the mod figures "well i gotta start the game, or it'll die. more will join once they see how well its going".
but new players RARELY join mid game (even after just the first turn in a lot of games) and the game ends up being a 3 player game on a map/ruleset designed for 7 or 8 or more.

then the 3 players that joined loose interest because they see that there arent enough players to keep/make the game interesting.

I can not believe how many neses have opened over the past few days. I mean come on!
Half these ppl havent even posted in any of the NESes b4 and they r starting their own? Havent they heard of learning to play first?

I agree. For example, I started an NES with new and original rules, but it got lost in the flood because people are so clone-happy and start 4000BC NESes. What surprises me is people join these.

Okay, I agree with all of you, TOO TOO TOO many NESs. There are some that haven't even gotten anyone to join.

Now we are not about to force people to close thier NESs, definetlu not, THOUGH we will make a limit of the same NESs to be opened from now and on.

We should also make a thread where new player post thier presence and then they must wait a certain amount of time before thinking about starting a new NES.

Now I dont think judging the most best NESs becuase sometimes the ones that may look the best die before the "die before it starts" games begin. I think everyone should atleast post a thread of thier idea and see if they get atleast 7 people support before starting a NES. There are many potential NESs around though everyone needs a sense of timing and needs to hold thier horses before starting a nes that everyone else is. Whats the big deal anyways??? NES is about playing it and making stories and having fun, modding is not such a big deal but only a pain, people mod becuase there is a low percentage of a certain nes and there is a demand for it. Modders supply the fun and players play it.

I have tried a while before for a thread where players post the nes they are most interested in so future modders can have an idea of a NES to start.

I think I have said too much, anyways....

I definitely did not mean to be a detriment to the community or hurt other NES in progress when I opened up the “NES of Doom,” I apologize to those who see it as an affront to their NESing. When I first posted it, it was origional... then hours later new ones arose in droves.

I do think, however, that I have very original and extensive rules set (I sure haven’t ever seen them before, and I’ve been reading the NES threads for quite some time)… so mine isn’t a mindless clone (IMO). I posted it because all the other NESes were already pretty much far-along already, (I did not know of any good openings) and so I thought I would create my own and try out some ideas for rules that maybe people would enjoy. I guess it was just coincidence and bad luck that a half-million others opened up immediately after I did (to my surprise, somebody even copied my new rules!). Apparently, my one new NES opened up the dam… and a flood came through... sorry.

Anyway, to make a long story short…

I understand that nobody wants to force any new ones to close. However, if my newer NES is such a hurt to other NESes, then I can respect that and shut it down (only a few players are active, or even seem to care). Although, I do not personally feel any good will come from crushing the creativity of new ideas (floundering as they may be), if the community feels that it hurts others, I will do so.

Well, that’s enough from me…

My Apologies,
AG
:)

actually, your NES looks pretty cool. The map is interesting, and the rules, although seemingly complicated seem pretty nice as well. I might join in the future.

Arbitray Guy- By no means is anyone asking you to shut down your NES. This forum is ruled by no one and regarldless of how long one's been here they have a right to post and mod. My argument (as i can't speak for others) is that people should be active for at least a littlewhile before they get confident enough to mod. My own apprehension to even playing and then modded is well documented in this forum, so possibly i'm not the best example of confidence. I think the argument everyones trying to make is that there are a few people out there who've seem to start and NES just to start and NES. While i'm all for more choices in NES's it does take a little away from others. I myself have been unable to join any of the newer ones (save maybe one) b/c of the volume. I'm already in alot and i'm already feeling that i'm suffering in the one's i'm in. Essentially it boiles down to this. There are a finite amount of players in this forum. Those players have a finite amount of time. Therefore, prior to opening a NES a mod should take it upon himself/herself to make sure there are enough players to make the NES interesting and sustainable. And that there isn't a glut of other ones. I've seen times where there were only a few NES's running and times like now, when there seems to be no limit. In order to make a better enviroment for us all i advise EVERY potential mod, not just the new guys here (and i hate that label) to do a little bit of double checking before diving in.

Jason, I completely agree. This is why I shut down my NES. And I did add rules. I can't name any NES that mine is a "clone" of.

Also I would like to speak in defence of my NES, it has entered its 9th update and has 6 members. I know its not the biggest NES nor in the same category of greatness as many older NES's. I do not wish to stop modding, nor do I want older NES's to die. I may have jumped into modding quickly and it appears many others have also, but if you do not like them then do not join them. Also I believe that my NES is at the bottom of the list of other players priorities and if they were to quit an NES it should be mine and not an older more developed one. But I think that if a person wants to start a NES, they should be allowed to. If it fails it fails, if it works it works. Whatever will be, will be.

nothing should be done.

newbies most likely did not know of how damaging a flood of NES's can be to the community. It does not mean they have to shut down. In fact, I hope these messages do not deter anyone to shut down. This is a forum, and forums are used to express ideas. However, it is redundant to express the same ideas over and over.

There should be NO rule or anything, no list, no nothing. Let's just hope the new mods here get our point, and will take it upon themselves to know.

If anyone has any questions, wants some information, or maybe help with a new rule, you may contact me on aim at yosemitehker, or by pm if you wish.

Jason

I agree. I waited 2 months before starting an NES, only to realize I suck at modding.
Jason, out of all the NESes I was in in August, your's is the only one alive. Good Job!
