ZNES II: A Life Of Crime

Introduction
New Haven City, 1931, a city of freedom, wealth and opportunity, a melting pot of cultures looking to strike it rich. Irish, Italian, Russian and Polish immigrants have flooded the city looking for work and a better life. The New Haven Dream...
Of course this is what the Governments want you to think but really this city is a place of corruption and greed where only the rich get the opportunities and the poor get the ghettos. To survive in this city and make it rich you gotta bend the rules a little and that's what Crime is all about...

The Game
Ok this is my second ever NES hence the title ZNES II. This is a story NES which is set in the world of organised Crime and New Haven City to be exact. Now obviously I have to change a lot of Story NES rules so that the game makes sense so it is highly advised you read through the following explanation of the rules.

Your Character
Aswell as controlling your entire Gang you are also playing the character of the gang leader, so you can go to jail or buy a new house in Heavenly point or join your guys in a bank job. It really is entirely upto you...

Updates & Events
The game passes at six months per turn (i.e. Turn 1 from 1st January 1931 until 30th June 1931, then Turn 2 from 1st July 1931 until 31st December 1931 etc...) The Updates will be written out like short newspaper summaries so they basically cover all the good bits. Orders are to PM'd at all times. Updates shall come when I have all orders or I feel it's time an update was done or when I have the time to do it.
Events will occur every turn or so as I see fit, they may be for instance a member of your gang turns into an informer or a new gang appears in town or new rackets become available etc... These are random and can occur at any time to anybody. They'll simple spice the game up.

Income & Expenditure
There are several things covered by this. Basically you make money from your territory and the rackets that operate in them. Certain areas in the city make more money than others depending on the Racket you set-up there, this will be explained in detail later.
Every turn you'll make a certain amount of cash from your rackets and businesses, then the amount you pay in bribes is deducted leaving you with the final amount which you can use for buying new Territory. You can bank any amount of cash you want but be warned, if you start saving up too much in one place the Taxmen might come looking for his share.
Your main type of Expenditure though will be bribing, you need to bribe the police to keep the heat down, the more you give the more you get. There are different amounts of bribes for each politician or Police Chief, if at any point they are voted out of office or replaced then you'll lose your control over them.
For now we'll talk about bribing Politicians. This is really helpful but also very expensive, at the begining of the game only the Agostino Family has a Politician on their pay-roll. These guys can get you new land, businesses and keep the FBI and Police off your back. But if you do something they don't like then you may be finding yourself in a lot of trouble. You'll discover more about these guys as the game progresses.

Membership & Territory
Increasing your territory isn't as easy as just walking in and taking the land you'll need to be bribing some officials to start increasing your territory. Turf is very important, the more you have the more respect you get and then the more members you get. Your wealth can also affect your amount of members, very rich gangs will always attract plenty of wannabe gangsters who want to make it big.
Unlike other story games you can not increase your "army" in your orders, only by increasing your territory and opening new Rackets will you get a bigger membership.
The main way of gaining empty land though is by buying it. Using your excess cash to buy out businesses in that area and expanding into it then setting up your rackets.
Of course you can always fight for it, if another gang has the territory you can always start a war...

Respect
Respect is everything in New Haven City. This is how you get new members and it can also help lower the prices for bribes. Your respect can rise in multiple ways, owning certain businesses can increase your respect so can the amount of territory you own. Maybe being a very powerful gang can also gain you large respect. Successful gang wars can also raise your respect massively.
But you can also loose respect. Defeat in a gang war or becoming an informant for the police. Killing innocents can also sometimes lower your respect rating and not making a lot of money. Gangs with Low respect but high membership may find themselves riddled with turncoats and informants so be warned...

Rackets & Money
Alright this part seems to be confusing people so I have completely rewritten it...
To set-up a Racket you state in your orders what kind of racket you want to set-up and where. The Racket can be anything you want.
To set-up a Racket though you need to have a supply of that good and a demand. You can find the supply and demand of each product further down the thread in the "City" section.

Example:
The Polish Mob buy the arms factory in North Industrial Sector. They own an area in the East Side Ghetto which demands cheap weapons. Therefore they sell their weapons made at the factory in the Ghetto for profit. Simple business.

But say they want to set-up a Arms Racket in the East Side without owning the factory then they can rob the Factory Warehouse or make their own weapons or even import illegal weapons from abroad then sell them on.

All I can stress is try to be creative, there are always ways to make money in this game.

Trade & Alliances
Trade and alliances are important if your to succeed in this city. Trade with other gangs can be useful for getting certain things which you might need for you rackets etc... For instance, Gang A is importing Drugs from the docks and Gang B can't but owns a piece of the city where Drugs are in demand. So Gang B offers Gang A a cut of the profits if they will supply them with the Drugs.
Quite simple really.

Hits
Porbably the most fun part of the game, mob Hits. These can be anything from highest of high risk jobs to easy drive-by shootings of a local Pimp harrassing your merchandise.
The biggest jobs are hits of rival bosses these cost a lot of money to perform successfully but can seriously weaken a Gang.
If you are the subject of a successful hit then it's game over, you'll have to leave the game and join again once a new gang is available. You can not run the same gang after you've been hit.

Doing Time
You all know the saying: "If you can't do the time don't do the crime." Well in New Haven City it isn't any different. In the event that you fall behind in your bribe payments or you become sloppy then the feds will have no problem bringing you in.
There are a couple of different things that can happen at this point so I'll explain them both seperatly...

Targeting The Jury Or Witnesses
If your up for a very serious crime then it is possible to do one of these. You can eithe intimidate the jury into voting "not guilty" or take out one of the main witnesses. Be warned though that this is very expensive and risky and should only be tried in very serious circumstances.

In The Slammer
So you've been found guilty and now your behind bars, for some this is game over but for others it's just a new home to do business from. To survive a jail term and emerge as leader of your gang at the end you have to have a very high respect rating, or you can just bribe the politicians and jail guards.
If this is done then you can expect to continue to run your business as normal as the guards turn a deaf ear to your shady dealings.
Nearly everyone in the game might have to do some time, wether it be for a couple of years or a few months or even a life sentence. Just make sure you've got things sorted out so that when you do go down you'll come back up.

Joining The Game
Okay so there will only be 8 places available to begin with, but over time I intend to open a new City to expand into which will have some new gangs for new players to assume control of. I want to draw up a list of reserves, people who will take over gangs that have had their leader killed or want to join when the new City opens.
So please sign-up as quick as you can, it's gonna be first come first serve.

Note
If you have any questions please feel free to ask.
Thanks :goodjob:

Difficulty Levels
Some gangs are easier to play than others, obviously the Agostino Family and Soderino family are probably the easiest with the Bonsignore's, Irish and Corsello's a more difficult challenge. The hardest gangs to play as are the Polish and Russian Mobs and the Franceschi Family but they are not impossible.
On another note certain gangs have more chances of their leaders being arrested, I'm afraid you'll have to find that out over time by yourself.

Thanks :goodjob:

Cash To Spend Turn I (1931, Jan 1st - June 30th)

The Corsello Family - $390,000 to spend

The Agostino Family - $390,000 to spend

The Soderino Family - $630,000 to spend

The Bonsignore Family - $342,000 to spend

The Franceschi Family - $240,000 to spend

The Irish Brigade (Irish Mob) - $300,000 to spend

The Polish Mob - $120,000 to spend

The Russian Mafia - $163,800 to spend

This is the first amounts of cash every gang has to spend for Turn I. Spend it wisely ;)

Racket Prices
Here's a quick guide to the basic costs of setting up rackets and expanding them...

Code:
****************************************************************
Racket Type Set-Up Costs Expansion Costs Income
****************************************************************
Basic Racket $40,000 $20,000+ $5,000+

Intermediate Racket $70,000 $40,000+ $8,750+

Medium-Scale Racket $100,000 $80,000+ $12,500+

Large-Scale Racket $200,000 $100,000+ $25,000+

Ok these prices will change over the game but for just now these are the costs. The income is worked out monthly and every Expansion to an exsisting Racket increase it's income by 75%.

So for a quick example:
A Large-Scale Racket is set-up for $200,000 generating $25,000 a month and therefore $150,000 a turn. With an expansion of $100,000 the income will change to $43,750 a month and $262,500 a turn.
Very simple maths (well kinda) and you don't have to worry about doing all this as I will.
The guide is simply there to help you decide what to set-up.

Land Costs
Alright this is purely a guide to land costs, buildings on that land will be a bit more expensive as they'll include the cost of the land and the building itself.

Code:
************************************
Area Of City Cost Of Land
************************************
Downtown $2,500,000
Plaza De Casino $2,200,000
Heavenly Point $1,900,000
Commercial District $1,400,000
North Industrial Estate $900,000
West Island Ind. Sector $750,000
West Docks $700,000
East Island Ind. Sector $500,000
Little Italy $150,000
West Side Ghetto $85,000
East Side Ghetto $60,000

I'd like to sign up!

Great to have you onboard Erik. I'll have the gangs available up in a bit :goodjob:

i wannebe the Mafia!!!

OK, now that you've edited in the stuff, I wanna start in the Downtown.
Could these be example orders?
"Start gaining money by operating a casino, then increase respect, hire new members."

Are there gangs already or do we make them?
Can you give me an example of better orders?
I have my orders ready to PM once you give me a template. Templates are good.

There are pre-made gangs up there. I'll post here an example orders for the Agostino Family Gang...

Orders:
- Expand Gambling Racket
- Expand Prostitution Racket
- Offer City Mayor a Bribe ($XXX)
- Make an enquiry as to the cost of the The Burbank Hotel & Restaurant

Something like this is fine. The game is really all about what you want to do so be creative ;) If I think that what you've asked for is impossible or improbable then I will tell you, as a good mod should :p

So enjoy :goodjob:

P.S. Remember to PM those orders!

I take The Agostino Family.

Saints be praised, I'll be taking the role of Séamus O'Bannion of the Irish Brigade.

*does a gun-toting jig*

Fine then, Corosello Family for me.

Great to have you on board :D Alright tonight I'm going to post the prices of Land in each area of the town to help people out aswell as the cost of setting up and expanding rackets.

Anyone who has sent orders already can do so again with this new information.

Thanks :goodjob:

Argh, got complicated, and I misunderstood some things.
Sorry, I must withdraw my joining. Great NES you have going, let me just say that. But it got a bit confusing when first you posted rules, then I signed up, then later you added loads of gangs.

To all Itailian Families of New Heaven City:
