thsi threas is ONLY a preview for my first NES- I do not know when I will release it, I just want to get input on my map, and the rules I have made
map-
Rules (prewritten to just be copy and pasted from a word document, so dont worry if the intitial address is kinda weird)
PLEASE READ RULES! THERE ARE SOME NEW (to me at least) CONCEPTS IN THIS GAME!
that said, welcome to the living hell that will be your stay in the darkages and beyond...
*Note! just as a warning, this game will be aomoung the most IC oriented games ever- you'll see why, but there alot of factors aside from you the controller, as to how your nation veiws other antions in the game- this is to add a little realism, in that a ruler dose not have complete control over his/her nation, and a nations feeling may be very different from that of the ruler- but when carrying out diplomacy, you have to act according to how you nation veiws those who you are talking to...
A few new concepts
Religion, Culture, and diplomacy
In this game I though tI would spice things up a bit by makeing things like religion and culture importan tto the game, and not just gratifying statistics on the main page of the thread- that said, religion and culture now affect how your nation officially veiws those around it- for instance- the Western Roman empire at this time, is polythiestic once again, that religion being all the rage now that the incrediblyl popular Julian the Apostate (a man raised as a christian, and educate dby the finest christian scholars, and theologans I might add, yet converted back to the old faith) is basically, not going to get along that well religious wise with the Christian Eastern Roman empire- yet it will get along more well religiouslly with empires like the Persians, the indipendent Roman state of Britania, and evern the germanic tribes- because all these nations are polytheistic- adverslly, the Eastern Roman empire will suffer in opinion from all these nation, even its Roman brethren (but it will get along just dandy with Armenia
), and if playong one of these nations, you should try to take n arrogent, even slightlly hostile tone with them (my posts in Jasons NES shoudl provide a nice example
)
now, that said, as I said before, culture to has an effect- for instance, the higher a nations culture, the more repsect you should show them diplomatically- as in real life, even the great enimies, the (eastern) Roman empire, and persia, despite being bitter enimies, would alway engage in a somewhat friendlyl compititon of outdoing each other when the others diplomats came for a visit, and dipite being enimies, were very honourabel and couteous, and being grandlly treated at each other great capital palces... at least this is what diplomats and official representatives got
- while on the other side of the coin,a barbarian would be lucky to with any nation to get a highlly annoyed general in a tent to even see him, let alone treat him overlly kindlly (this depended on the people involved of course, but you get my meaning)- thus the higher the cultueral rateing, the more kindness you should show in diplomacy- a barbarian nation for instance will treat a civilized one with awe- even though the civilized nation looks down at the barb like a annoying bug...
-onemore point on culture- similer cultures will negate a godo deal of any religious animosty- for instance, with the western, and eastern roman empires going only religiouslly, they would be hostile- going only by culture, they would be inseperabel- thye combination is what it was in real life- a luke warm relation, with much jealosy of each other...
that said, it is possible to change your nations religion- however, you can only change it to a religion that is in a neighboring nation like the eastern Roman empire cannot become Hindu unless the persian empire converts to that religion...
this may be a little confusing, so if you have any questions on the subject, dont be afraid to ask
*note- it is possible to loose culture, but this happens as an effect of your overall actions, and there is no real way to prevent it if your being a dildo choice wise, or you havent done anything interesting for a turn or so

Military
Th emilitary aspect is an important factor in any NES, and this one is no different- basically, there are severla types of troops-
Infantry (basic troops, good in all terrain, excel at seiges and open ground combat)
War band-(poor in open ground, excell at forested terrain)
Ranged( good against cavaly, excel at uneven terrain)
Cavalry(good afainst foot [warbadn and infantry], outstanding in open terrain, poor in forests
Mercenary
Ships
UU
of this, the standard amount troops would be 500 for each half economy you spend, this is with the exception to the UU, and Ships, of which with the UU, you get 100 troops for each half economy, and a squadron fo 5 ships fo reach half econ (if your UU is a ship, I will let 10 of those ship- UUs be built for each half econ)
that said, several factors will be involved with your military
1)terrain- your going to need to break eout your atlases for this one folks, as in my NES, all battlefields were NOT created equal, cavalry will get penalties in mountians, and forests, unless you have a cav UU perfected for those terrains, and war band for instance get a penalty in open terrain- basically just commen sense match ups as far as troops go, that said, infantry is the base take all terrain troops for the civilized nations, war band being it for the barbarians (with a few exception, such as the mongols, turks, arabians, and the african nation between E. Rome, and Ethiopia)
another factor will be national moral- thi sis tied into culture really, and will more or less be decided by me based upon your activities, and victories, and achivements and so on, the better the moral, the better the troops service
levals of moral-
Heroic
Impetuous
High
Good
Standard
Poor
Frightfull
Cowardlly
and ofcourse, numbers will be a factor, but a good stratagy can over come just about any numerical advantage, so if a good strat is Pmed, or posted, it could very well win you the battle, if not the war for you, even if you have but a fraction of the troops you opponent has
* an note on troops
not every nation has ever option avaible for troosp types- liek the Roman antion do not have warband open to them, and the (european) barbarian do not have the well organized infantry availible to them- to tak evar eof this, are mercenaires- these troops come in differeing numbers depending on what nation you are- for instance, a germanic tribe could buy 200 Roman deserters to add in the much needed well organized infanty lines to them (a good portion of any barbarian army would have been Roman deserters after all, proving particualey usful as even the basic trooper had some skills to hone the barbs into better, more organized troops)
but Rome could easilly get 1000 warband for thier empire for the same half economy- becuase I want to simulate reality again- warband are an easy sorce of huge masses of footmen, the main part of any army, yet the warband have a rtaher limited role other then being filler troops for the ranks... if this situation prooves to be imbalenced, I will change it
*note ships can carry 100 soldires each, unless the ship is a UU with ahigher carrying capability
Federate nations
now what is this you ask? a concept that i came up with to makethings interesting- any nation that has lost all its territory can ask to becoem a federate of another antion- thsi dose two things, it A) increaes the federate granters army the same number of troops as the applicant has in thier service at the time they grant it, and B)gives a portion of land to the applicant- thsi land will be marked as if it is rebellion, because as in rela life, a federate nation is a risky undertakeing for the nation granting it- on one hand they gain sometimes VERY significant numbers of troops, but at the risk of loosing land permantlly (asusming they dont take it back by force of arms
)- the federate applican tis ofcourse left with the land to settle, adn can basically operate as his own nation once again- but he basically has to do what ever the granter nation wants him to do, from giving up economy to sending his troops to aid in battle...
*note I have taken the liberty of deciding what the starting UUs for nations will be already
, UUs may be changed with each era
economy- basicalyl the same as in Jasons nes5, the same levals, and you can do two things per economy leval, if only one thing is done (which will be VERY rare), and if you have more econ then there are options, you get a "+", with howmany extra econs you have in it
economic levals-
Outstanding
Surplus
Growing
Stable
Recession
Depression
In the ****ter
*note on trade- same as in jasons NES, you may have but three importing, and three exporting trade routs, untill I decide that it would be good to let nations have more then 3
Wonders
well wonders operate basically the same as in Jasons NES 5, with one major difference- wonders can be rushed- however, for each turn gained in rushing. two[/o] economies must be spent to it, makeing such a move either fo rthe desperate, or extreamlly wealthy... that saidm I reserve the righ to decide how many turns a wonder will need (max of 8), and will balence a wonder that is imbalence statisically
technolgy and era advancement- basically, you people are going to HAVE to reserach techonlogy- one enough techonlogy is present in a nation, that nation will reach the next era..
that said, technolgy rarelly stays in one place forlong, and starting out, after 3 or 4 turns, a technolgy will automatically be taken up by the nations around it, and they may do with it as they please... but after another 3 or 4 turns, the the tech will automatically spread to all the nations around them. meanign that eventually, everyone will have every tech...
Cities
on the final note, cities play an importan part as well- the more you have, the more culture you have, there si also the fact that a civil improvment, a
barracks building can be built in 5 cites at a time per econ- they will be represented by white dots around the city, capital cities are assumed to already have barracks- the more barracks you have, the higher your troops morale is, with the proper housing, and supply condition met to keep them happy
there si also the fact that many barabrian nations have no cities in them- this lead sme to a new concept (I think)- city founding- city founding costs one economy for you first city(assuming you dont havy any to begin with) , and three full economies for every city after it (that counts for nations with cities already, you dont get the cheap first city)
founding cities do have the effect of immidiately giving an upgrade on moral, and on cultiure, rasing bth by one leval for each city founded
