stJNES8: Of Empires

Welcome to the final addition to the stJNES series. This doesn’t mean the end to my NES’s, but an end to the stJNES series. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I will enjoy MODing it.

There will be a player limit to this NES. When I hit that limit, I will let you know. I am not going to have another 28-player NES on my shoulders again.

This NES will also move quicker then stJNES5, in a hope to get to middle ages within a month or two. I am just sick of the ancient ages.

The feature of this NES is the economy and numerous domestic stats that will play a much larger role in your nation’s affairs. You do not have to be an international superpower now to enjoy the same gaming as a builder nation. Do you want to forget about your domestic issues and just rule a vast empire, collecting taxes from the very whim of military might? Or are you content on your small island, filling each home with items from across the globe, and having the streets paved in cobblestone? It’s up to you where the direction of your nation goes, and only one way to find out. Of Empires!

Rules

A 3000bc NES. However, this will be based more upon your ability to run your nation – not your ability to sweet talk NPC’s and take advantage of them.

Economy
economy-01.gif

So What’s New?
Finally, a different economy system for the common story NES. Your economy is based off of your tax, collected from your citizens. Basically, the economy is by numbers, and is based upon the purchase power your populace. This plainly means that even a small country, given that it is rich, can make the same amount of money a larger nation does.
So how does it work?
So, you can use every bit of your economy each turn. Say your economy is at 3; you can use it on any number of your stats, one economy point per stat, including your army. The way you raise your economy is by conquering new land, generally having your population increase, trade more, make your people rich somehow, or anything else, be creative. However, it happens gradually. It’s not like the old system, where you just say “increase economy” or, not even when you give a reason. It happens in stories, in diplomacy, or in side notes. It may even happen in a random event.
There’s more!?
You may also put aside money, into a treasury. Sort of like a bank account, you can use this money whenever you need it (war, depression, etc.). There is no max that you can have in your treasury, no limit to the time you can have it there, and there is no way money can leave it’s treasury, not even in a random event. No one can steal it either.

Military
701salamis.jpg

Army
Your army is represented in numbers. You can recruit any kind of men in your army, as long as it is related to the age that you are in. This means that there will no longer be an Age near your army numbers. Say you have many Knights in your army, but you decide to upgrade them to cavalry since your discovery of a certain technology. You simply say in your orders to use an economic point on that.
Navy
Same thing as the army, but the different ship designs may take some research, and what helps research more then money? Also, your need for the certain design may aid in your research.
Training. Will that finally be in this stJNES?
Yes, and from the very beginning as well. Train your troops by either paying for it (1 econ. point per kind of unit (i.e. one for all your infantry, one for your tanks, etc.)), or by using them in combat many consecutive times. Training levels: Conscript, Militia, Good, Veteren, Elite. If you do not use them often, the training will begin to degrade.
Equipped with what?
The equipment of your troops will depend upon the economy of your nation. That simple.
Conscription and Mobilization?
Conscription will not be ready until the medieval age, and mobilization won’t until industrial age.

Miscellaneous Stats
books.jpg

Education
Of course there’s education! What does it do? Guess. For those who are new, it helps with age advancement. The backfire is that if your people become too educated, they may want a more representative type government. Your nation could also be at the forefront of scientific discovery and prosperity. Education drops when you jump an age, or when you stop paying attention to it.
Infrastructure
Includes your roads, aqueducts, homes, canals, highways, air ports, buildings, etc. The more you invest into this, the better your country will be in those terms, the happier your people, and the more modern your nation will be. It will help with the economy as well, at some point, and will lead to higher populations as more migrate to live in such a modern nation. This, also with trade and defense, may determine how fast you can build ships.
Trade
The more you invest in this, the larger your markets become, and also helps with the roads like the infrastructure does. This also enlarges your ports to handle more trade. It has a huge impact on how much you can utilize of other trading partners – if you have ten partners, but only a size 1 trading level, then you are wasting much of your revenue you could gain from the trade.
Industry
When you invest on this, you invest in the ability of your nation to make war materials (forge weapons, cut trees, etc). This will have an impact on how much army you are able to raise with an economy level.
Defense
The things under the defense budget include your city walls, forts, and watchtowers. It may also include your stationary missile defenses, and your military bases. With a higher defense budget, you will put up a heavier fight to an invader.
Roads
Well, this isn’t really a stat in your template, but I thought this would be the best place to mention it. You can build roads to connect your cities, and to connect to a neighbor. Roads take time to build, and will be represented on the map. It is one econ. point, not matter how long the road is, to build one road from one city to another. If you connect to a neighbor, trade will be stronger.

Religion
072602-Oracle.jpg

So what, Religion never has a big role
Well, in this NES it does. NPC’s who are the same religion as you will be greatly influenced by you, and their people more susceptible to trade with you. Especially if it is a monotheistic religion, you will gain advantages of having the leader (Pope) in your nation.
Making our Own?
This is highly suggestible. If anyone wants to know how good it is, ask Amon Savag from stJNES5, his religion aided him in spreading his influence among all of Europe. Though it did take hard work – much story writing, and much imagination. If you start to use the religion a lot, in stories and other, then I will take with it and make something of it in the game.

Wonders
pyramids.jpg

Uh oh, what are you going to do with our Wonders?
Well, I am limiting them to one per nation, and only five per age, and your nation cannot build 2 wonders consecutively each age. Meaning you must be quick to get this wonder. It will also take longer then normal, much longer, in fact. The effects will be unknown to the builder until it is complete. You may hurry a wonder by paying an econ. point per turn to hurry it. I will keep track of the wonders being build and how many are left per age on the front page.

Unique Units
p4.jpg

Okay, so what’s the deal?
Simple, one per age, and will be listed among with your normal army. The more you write about your UU, the more affective it will be.

End

Ok, I think that is it. The template will be following this. Please do not start in the America’s or Australia. And it would be best if you do not start in Southern Africa, because, well, nobody else will, lol. Best bet is in Middle East, Europe, North Africa, and hopefully people will join in the India Subcontinent or in the East. You may send orders the post you sign up in. Stories always help your nation, because if I get to know your nation better, so will the world. Oh, and please leave the bracketed ’s and all, its there so when I copy from here and paste into the front page, I don’t have to do it all over again. Replace the stat only when it does not have a colon after it.

One last thing, you are encouraged to join as a nation not commonly used in other NES’s, or you can make up your own. Dare to be great!
