I'm new to uploading units. I used the thread in the CFC forum, but got an error message: Missing "Text\PediaIcons.txt" ANIMNAME_PRTO_Crossbowman

Also, the icon (for the editor) did not appear. What is it that I need to do to incorporate a new unit into the scenario.

Background: I am trying to add Crossbowman (along with possibly lots of other units) into my game. I realize that I must create a scenario, but when I try to add the stuff in, the game crashes. Up to this point, I have always just altered the existing units (or copied them) and lived with the incorrect descriptions and pictures in the Civilopedia. My daughter, however, wants to try some new units, but she will not know what the things do. I would love to use lots of the new units that others have made, but I can not seem to get the things working. :D

Detailed help would be greatly appreciated.

When you add a new unit into the editor, you also need to add in a text files the reference to the graphics.

In the editor, you give a name (PRTO_Crossbowman). Then, in Pediaicons.txt, copy and past the reference to an existing unit (for instan ANIMNAME_PRTO_Warrior), and replace PRTO_Warrior by PRO_Crossbowman.

Last, this file will give the name of a folder (exemple : Warrior). This folder must contains an ini file with the same name (exemple : Warrior.ini), and this ini file contains all the pathes to the FLC you want to add.

New problems: Still don't have the picture in the editor and now it says that I don't have a file crossbowman/.../swordsman/fortify.

I realize I am probably not the best person to have modifying the game but...

:cringe:

For the picture in the editor you will need to upgrade you're 'unit 32' file. Exact instructions are on these boards. Otherwise, it does not matter much, scroll about in the editor and pick something close, like any of archer unit pictures.

Again, everytime you get an error message, having written it down, follow it out. In the case above go to Crossbowman unit file and bring up the .ini file or crossbowman text file, for that is all it is and on it are the places for inserting the fortify file or name thereof so it can be called up from within where ever it is located (best to copy files and have them all together in each unit file)'

If this is confusing, be of good cheer :goodjob: and go to the threads with the detailed instructions and follow them.

Ok, now I have reached a snag! My computer does not know how to read the Unit_32 file and when I tell the computer to go look for a program I have no idea what is happening!! :crazyeye: :crazyeye: I think it is sending me to the internet to buy software, is that correct? If so, how do I find out if I already have software that works or which software should I buy (or get from shareware)?

 I realize that I must seem awfully dumb, but I have a disability that affects my ability to organize (it's called CFIDS and it stopped me from working as an Analytical Chemist). :crazyeye:

T o view the file you need a graphics program. Paint I believe should do otherwise search the web for "the Gimp" a good, albeit weird at first glance, FREE graphic program.

For the Units32, you don't actually need to open it to view it (u do that through the editor). Copy and save the original one somewhere then download the Units32 file by Zulu (in complete units forum) because it lists nearly all of the ones on these baords. Then replace the old Unit32 by this new one and when you go in the editor, you can scroll the units until you reach the one you are looking for.

Thanks LouLong for your help. One of the things that I had serious difficulty with was the file Swordsman\SwordmanFortify.wav file. First of all, in the crossbowman configuration settings it had Swordman\SwordmanFortify.wav (thus missing the 's' in the first file folder name). But even when I corrected this, the game blew apart. In the end, I deleted the sound (don't really listen to them much anyway) for fortify. The game still blew apart but the next time it loaded (go figure).

Now,the only bizarre part is that when the crossbowman fights, 1/2 of the opposing figure is cut off. Additionally, the circle at the feet of the crossbowman is incomplete.

Is this going to cause me any problems.

I really, really appreciate all your guys' help. :D

:goodjob: :goodjob:
I finally got some units to work!! :king:

Thanks to all who helped. I got the crossbowman and the Ent to function. Look out world, I'm dangerous now...

Seriously, though: when I first try to load the scenario, the entire game quits (i.e. after setting the civ I will be taking and saying start, the computer goes back to the main windows screen--the game is no longer functioning).
If I then restart the game and try a different scenario, sometimes it loads sometimes it doesn't. If I go in a second time, it always loads. Then if I push ctrl-shft-Q and start the modified scenario, I get in. A bit of work, but eventually it works!!!
:worship:

EDIT: New help needed. The game crashes the first time that I load it with the "Crossbowman". If, instead, I start a different scenario and then go out as above, the game will play with the crossbowman. Why is this happening??
