I have a $3000 limit for a new laptop through work.

Main conditions are:
Must have best possible screen for watching DVD's on (at least 15").
at least 512K RAM
at least 60GB HD
Processor should be full Pentium, no Celeron or anything, at least a 2.5Mhz
Wireless Networking set-up (w/ wireless router)
Modular bays if possible (at least one)
Must have XP Professional

Ask if there's anything else to clarify.

My initial plan is to go through Dell (either the 8600 or 9100) since we get a 5% discount through them, but other well known, legitimate companies are possible.

Ideas?

Oh, I pity you, having to spend that entire $3000 all by yourself, likely in U$D nonetheless . . .

Anyway, on a serious note, I have heard taht Centrinos are good, they do not consume battery power, and they have decent performance. 512 seems like enough, the HD is your choice, just get a decent brand, like Western Digital. Go for a decent Video Card, some of the other Computer Talk peoples can help you with that more, but a decent video card is a MUST!!!

Geez, I wish I were in your situation!!!

is there anything out at the moment which uses 64bit processors? I thought I read somewhere that everything still uses 32bit?

There are a few 64-bit linux dists out for grabs, and Far Cry for AMD64 is in the making. :yeah:

But that's beside the point. The poing being that AMD64 processors whip Pentiums in all reviews/benchmarks, and are far superior in general performance.

ah, ok. I wasn't being judgemental or anything, I was just wondering, I've only read little bits and pieces.

And yeah, if you've got the money, get the best you can. nothing worse than spending say £2000 on a computer only to have it out of date within a year. I'd rather spend the extra few £'s and futureproof it

I highly recommend you get a Centrino processor and not a regular P4 or Celeron - if you're looking to save battery life and have integrated networking at least.

Check out http://www.sagernotebook.com/index.html for some very well built laptops. They have laptops that include large 17 inch widescreens with ATI Mobility 9700 cards to laptops with swiveling screens (that's right, screens that move left and right).

Oh, for a fraction of a second I thought it was actually possible to build your own laptop. :(

Centrino/pentium m processors are good little beasts. They are the basis for the next intel desktop cpus... Net burst was canned since it was choking with alot of issues...heat and power consumption for example. Yes that means no "Tejas" core..
A few people sight this as a golden oppurtunity for AMD to take about 5-10% more of the desktop market, since in theory there will be a gap in the market to fill.

Anyway back on topic, i'd go for a centrino/pentium m cpu for my imaginery laptop...and thats coming from an AMD fan!
