For me loading, inter turn and between turns time wrecks my game...
I use a 3.06 P4 with 1024 ram and in maps with more than 12 civs it's getting progrsssively worst, even with animation options unselected until by the time AI starts building harbors it can be as long as 30 mins between turns.
I admit spending this time reading or studying strategy guides(which are excellent BTW) but still there are times I feel disconnected from the game...

Sounds like you have a problem. My processor has half the clock-speed of yours, and I have a tiny fraction of the memory. Worse yet, I have added a kabillion extra units in my modded game. In spite of that , my time between turns usually only runs about 1 minute. I never have to resort to extraneous reading. If I were you I would check what other programs (adware?) are running in the background, and look at virtual memory settings. Good luck.

I hear a lot of people say that their turns last for up to 30 mins in games with lots of civs. I always thought it might have been because slow processors or not enough RAM, but if you have that much that wouldn't be the case. The weird thing is, I'm using an (early) 1.6 P4 with 1024 RD RAM, and my current game has 14 civs on a huge map, it's 1700 AD, and I haven't waited more than 1 or 2 mins. between turns.

If I had to pick the worst aspect of CIII, I'd have to go with the old standard and whine about the diplomacy options. But the positives of the game more than outweigh the negatives... why else would we all be here?

my point is that if a number of negatives is proposed we could move to the ideas forum and suggest changes for civ4...

What I dislike is having to move workers all the time to clear up pollution as I don't trust automated workers to do it efficiently...

I don't understand, my 400MHz pentium processor can handle standard maps quite well. Your 3.06 should be pretty fast, if you're only on a 1 level up map size, and your processor is 7.5x mine! Ooh, I'd love to have one of those.

I think you must have a problem Garbarsarwhatever :). Even playing on a 180x180 map with 31 Civs (DyP mod) it takes about 30 seconds between turns. I am only at the end of the middle age but about 90% of the map has cities and there are about 1000 units. I have an Athlon XP 2200 and 512 Ram.

and look at virtual memory settings
I was playing from D drive with 0 V.M. thanks....
if you're only on a 1 level up map size,
TETurkhan T.O.T 28 civs and the previous error did it for me...plus a gazillion airports...

I just saw The Mormegil's post....any Ideas?

Back to the topic, probably the worst thing is bugs, such as Scientific GL not working properly (no SGA), the sub bug, etc. These should be fixed in the very first patch, it is unnecessary to have to bring out patch after patch, changing little things like costs and such when there are serious bugs, the game isn't as playable.

...but still enjoyable!! ;)

Why not post a thread in the computer forum, in civfanatics?

If you upgraded your RAM, maybe they put one of the cards in backwards or something? I was under the impression that it was mainly RAM that influenced game speed.

Thanks everybody...I posted it in the technical support forum....thanks again...

I'm not really a hardware guy so if that sounded stupid, it's because I was talking out of my rear :mischief:

Sorry, I don't know what's up with that. You should probably do what Jamesds recommended.

@BassDude726 - I didn't know it was possible to put Ram in backwards...

EDIT: Just saw you already did, so nevermind.

Those stupid railroads. They make AI turns 7 times longer. AUGH!!

I hate when you watch the AI units move around and around a city on roads
or railroads and they never really go anywhere   :smoke: :dubious: .

And the human like 17 times stronger. The AI doesn't, for instance, utilize the opportunities to throw troops, particularly defenders, from front to front to anything like what a decent human player does.

For me its that priceless moment that inevitably comes after about 90 minutes of my being immersed in the game - at exactly the 90 minute mark - without fail - my wife walks in the room and says the same thing every time, " how long do you intend to sit there and play that damn game!"

It is just such moments that make me far more sympathetic of OJ Simpson.
