Well? Do you name the continents of whatever game you play?

I just tried this idea. If I've got a bunch of cities, I can remember where they are easier if I know what continent they are on. It's not just cities, but I can name where the other civs are, and where I'm sending ships and troops to.

In short, naming big landmasses make things easier because you can say 'I'm going to invade Claw from my cities in Club' (and know every city on Club) instead of saying 'I'm going to go from here to there'.(And have a harder time keeping track of what's on 'here' or 'there'.

Sometimes, when I've built an immense number of cities, I open up WordPad, write down the name for a continent, and then list all the cities on that one landmass. (Repeat however many times necessary.) Sometimes on that WordPad file I'll divide up an especially large continent into subcontinental groups so I can keep track of where on that continent that city is. Sometimes I also group the cities into "provinces," partially to keep things organized, partially to keep myself amused when the turns start taking 45 minutes each. I'd post an attachment showing an example of what I'm talking about, but I'm visiting my uncle for most of the summer and I can't get at the comp I have it on because it's hundreds of miles away. (Luckily, I did bring my Civ2 CD :D )

I always name my cities in groups. Each section of a continent gets it's own range of letters. Then I use the city name field to keep track of various things.

A01-3-M means:
City name is A01
City has 3 trade routes
City has a Supermarket (I use 'M' because earlier in the game I use 'S' to represent freight commodities being supplied/demanded)

If there's a small land mass near the continent, it might be named IA01, standing for Island near grouping 'A'. If it's a big enough land mass it gets it's own letter.

Later in the game I'll name continents based on who was there before me. For example, if the continent I'm expanding on is also currently settled by the French, then my city names would be FR01, etc.

It makes location association much easier. Although I typically only do this on a large map.

I've often used city names form various US states -- where one "state" will be the continent. Islands will reflect islands -- so a two city island may have cities named "Santo" & "Domingo" & Bermuda will often be the first one city isle.

My plan is to use a different alphabetical letter to start the city name, thus making it easier with the go to command. So my Florida cities will typically be in the south of the world, Texas will start in a dryer area, Alaska/Canada in the far north.

A couple of others have used other systems to note city status, but I usually don't play that hard.
