Do spearman really work against tanks???

Not as a long term defensive strategy... I.e it wouldn't be recommended to build a load of spearmen and then wait for the AI to waste all its tanks attacking your spearmen... Its just probabilities and in the end if you tested it with enough pikemen then you would see that they killed more tanks statistically... Assuming n is large.

Yes unequivocally yes . A spearman can:
A.destroy tanks(primary function)
B.destroy more tanks (primary function aswell)
C.Wreck elaborate plans(by destroying tanks)
I hope they dont include spearmen in civ4. I tried to escape the accursed figure for years but nooooo it's back with a vengeance everytime.

Trick is, use bombers to kill the spearmen before you send in the tanks.

I'm assuming the game rounds down in some of it's calculations, so they technically come out the same in some situations + get unlucky.
The musketmen is much stronger, this and all the others have a multiple of 2 as their defensive stat so the same issue cannot be experienced elsewhere.

I've lost exactly one tank to a spearman in all the time I've played Civ3. It happens, just not very often.

The mighty spearman is indeed a very potent unit. I wrote a thread some time ago about this. A spearman was standing on a hill and since I didn't like him, I attacked him. I lost a tank and he got promoted... So the spear won over the machinegun!
Ok, the combat calculater says:
0.6% - Vet Spear on grassland sucessfully defends against vet tank sucessfully 6 out of 1000 times.
4.6% - Vet spear fortified in on a mountain sucessfully defends against a vet tank 46 out of 1000 times.
9.3% - Elite spear fortfied in a fortress on a mountain across a river sucessfully defends against a vet tank 93 out of 1000 time.
Not that likely in all cases, but possible.
