Can someone who has done this thouroughly explain to me step by step how to retain the 1.15 patch and upgrade to 1.22? Sorry if I'm not wording this right.
Probably the easiest way is to take advantage that if you run the patches again they uninstall themselves rather than install themselves. So to get from 1.15 to 1.22 you run the patch 1.22 to install it. Then to get back to 1.15 you run 1.22 to uninstall it, then 1.15 to uninstall that, and finally run 1.15 to install it again.
The next way is basically the same but you create a zip file that stores the crutial 1.15 files and another that stores the crutial 1.22 files and unzip when necessary. (Not exactly which files need to be zipped but I can check if you want to use this method).
The final method is to set up a dual install by copying the entire conquests folder to a new folder and then upgrading one of the installs whilst the other is left at 1.15. Then you run either version by setting up shortcuts to run one of the two .exe files.
I can go into more detail but this hopefully will be enough and also the first option is probably easiest as whilst setting up a dual install is possible it also takes up twice as much harddrive space...
Assuming the following:
You have Civ3 and C3C installed.
You have the patch file 1.15 and the complete 1.22 patch (not the upgrade one)
If you currently have 1.15 installed but want to play with the 1.22 patch:
Just apply the 1.22 patch normally going through the stages as normal and replacing the files and when it completes you will be able to play with patch 1.22.
If you currently have 1.22 installed but want to play with the 1.15 patch:
This time since you want to uninstall 1.22 you can rerun the 1.22 patch by running it as if you were going to install the patch again, when it finishes extracting it will ask you whether you want to uninstall the patch which you click yes to and then the patch will be uninstalled. The next step is to repeat this with the 1.15 patch by running it as if you were going to install it again, and again it will uninstall instead of installing. Then all you have to do is actually run the 1.15 patch again and install it.
I believe that you have to run 1.15 twice when going the other way as C3C overrights files that would need to be replaced by running 1.15 twice so that it installs them again.

If you have the hard disc space, I recommend backing up version 1.15
If you copy the entire Civilization III folder into the same directory it is in now, it will make a folder called Copy of Civilization III. You then patch Civilization III to v1.22. If anything goes wrong or you simply don't like v1.22, you can go back to v1.15 by deleting Civilization III and renaming Copy of Civilization III.
I always do this when up grading a patch. It keeps me from having to reinstall if I have problems.
The patches should almost certainly work first time and there is no reason to copy the entire Civ3 folder, you would only need to copy the Conquests folder.
