Here's a fantasy map based on the cycle by Philip José Farmer : Riverworld.

The books begin long in the future. The entire mankind comes back to life along a huge river on a strange planet.

This map is convered by a single huge valley. Borders are made by uncrossable mountains, like in the books. There are few ressources, except "graal stones" ( pierre à graal in my french version ) that give food and some tools to people. At the north pole, there's a little ocean and a little island figuring the "tower of the gods".

No river ????

There must be a problem ! Actually, there should be a river in the valley, coming from the polar ocean and going back to it.

I just downloaded an opened it in the editor. The river's there ! I don't understand why you don't have any river ?????

As I told about the river in the first post, I though it was obvious... well... maybe it wasn't. So, there's a river along the valley ;)

good idea imo, but u need to put more resources, lux, strategic and bonus + make the whea more random + i wouldnt put startinglocatiopns on wheat + put soem more hills/forest or different terrain instead of it being so monotonous. ive not read the books so they may not have forests/hills on but for gameplay you really need them, but otherwise great idea.

In the book, the valley is very monotonous, much more than the story :D. There is the river in a plain, then hills and a huge cliff. I wanted to stay close to the book. But I understand your point. I could add is some forest, and some tundra in polar area. I could also add lakes and gaps... The wheat is not random because it replaces "graal stones" wich have very regular places along the river. And there's quite no ressources except wood and stone.

Well, I think it would be possible to make another map less "realistic" and more playable... ;)

Yes MaisseArsouye I was looking at the screen shot, if you add some variation it looks like it could be a very fun map to play! Great Idea! :goodjob:

yeah! if u extended the hills in so that cities built along the river could access them, put random hills then just randomize resources locations is the fastest way or you can do it all by hand :) Please post it when you've finished.

Here's the new version of the Riverworld map. It's less book-like and more realistic and playable :)

Ressources are randomized, except for the Tower of Gods. I added hills, forests, tundras,... I also added some lakes to "break" this long valley and permit civs to build some coastal city improvements.

looks good from the screenshot, i'll d/l it on my other comp. later. i think im right in saying that the lakes have to be at least 21 squares area for coastal improvements to be built, im not sure if they are but they dont lok it from the screenshot. i look forward to paying this tomorrow.

I hope you don't mind but I modified your map making the oceans larger and changing rules, importing stuff etc. etc. I'll get back to you later after i've played a game.

@Beernuts1987 : no problem !! feel free to modify any of my maps the way you want :)

I also made a new version with larger lakes... I tried to upload it but the ancient version still there !? Well, seems like the newbie still have to work :D

As I remember, there were trees on riverworld...........so forests would be fine
Also, rather than a using a game river for the river, it should be a navigable body of water, as much of the books involved travelling the river in boats.
This has made me think.......
I may do my own riverworld map......
But congratiulations for recognising an excellent idea for a Civ scenario

Currently enjoying the second version of the map. Very nice job!!! It's nice to see Farmer's work recognized in such a way. I had been trying to do a world of tiers idea earlier, but couldn't figure out how to keep them separate. Never thought of using impassable mountains...

I am having an issue with the lakes. I can't build ports of naval units to allow crossing them. I'm sure I'll figure it out when aircraft come around. ;)

that sounsa good actually yeti, a navigable river would solve the transport problems, it'd have to be 2 squares wide though so 1 ship couldnt block the river. I think I'll go and edit the map to o that now. :D

@espirito : Good idea ! You could post it here, so that people find the two versions ;)

Just a precision, it is important boatscan't go directly from the river to the polar ocean. To fit the book, it has to be difficult :)
