Say there was some trustworthy way to pay the money, which is then used to pay a FireAxis programmer to modify the game
- up to 3 months work.

1. Would you pay?
- enter yes/no into poll.

2. What 5 changes would you want?
- be realistic, no 3D globes and remember, up to 3 months job-time.

EDIT - To the 'no's, would you change your mind if it was US$5? ;) Can't change poll now :(

Army
Artillery
Find ways to speed processing routines
Improve barbarians and options thereto
Goody Huts editor tab
Use of Leaders, Scientific and otherwise
Use of speciality units that would use partial worker abilities etc.
Use of Transportation units
Improve Air
Oh, for who care the imfamous 'sub' bug. However make it for version two. Sorry to those who disagree. If so just post nine dollars instead. ;)

Oh, and very importantly LEAVE everything else alone. Thanks! :hammer:
______

Sorry could not stop at five
Maybe make it eleven dollars to finance a small bribe to grease the skids :goodjob:

Plan B
Launch an e-mail campaign to Atari and Firaxis :D

 This almost feels like being back a church again, where we passed the 'plate' to see what we could God to do!

Well, I have already said this before, I think Atari and Firaxis are missing out on a big oppurtunity to make some more money by not creating art packs for sale on their website...

Basically, these would be like unit/game graphics packs with particular themes. And they could charge $5 a pop or something. I mean, the in-game graphics are the least strenuous part of the creation process. Just the fact that there have been many hundreds of units produced by fans proves that much.

But as for my five things:

1. Extensive Events language... an absolute must! Better than Civ 2!
2. The ability to have two civ-specific techs come to a mutual advance.
3. Better diplomacy options
4. More government variation options
5. The ability to set unit status in the editor (i.e. Fortified).... Having to fortify like eighty units at the outset of every scenario??? Give me a friggin' break!!

And the sad part is that many of these things were in Civ2, and the fact that they went BACK rather than forward is just my biggest sticking point for why I just might pass on Civ4. Especially if SSS really takes off between now and then.

Well, I would. Ten dollars isn't really too much. :)

And my 5 wishes are actually 3...
1. Don't go 3D! Keep it simple!
2. Don't create another unit standard... I don't want CFC's more than 600 units being non-Civ4...
3. Events, like in Civ2.

BTW, shouldn't this be on the Civ4 Suggestions forum? :)

FYI I ask the questions because I'm thinking, as it is, the most realistic option toward resolving some of the issues we have with Civ3.

Consider, if we were able to raise US$10,000 we would be in a good position to make some decent changes - Firaxis might even  stump up for the cause.

Through the poll I'm hoping to get an indication of support - particularly as to people who would fork out a little - from there I decide whether I'll push this...

This isn't anything to do with a CIV4!

It's with regard to a Civ3 player driven patch.

And, I think this is the best place for it!

It's never going to happen though. I think the reason they're already this far along in Civ4 is because they realized Civ3 was a bust and that the expansion packs couldn't ever hope to break through some of the more fundamental faults and so they decided to cut their losses and start fresh. Not bad since they made $120 per person on an incomplete game.

I think it's viable - assume as few as 500 people put in US$10 = US$5000. This could well be enough to pay for some limited work to be done...

Consider 5 best and realistic changes to the game - is that worth 10 or 5 dollars to you?

I could propose a two tier investment - 10 or 5 $ - person provides 5 'votes' as to changes and the amount defines the 'weight' of each vote.

These can then be compiled and decided upon by a limited council of well thought of content and gameplayers from the forum.

Finance can be handled through a limited company with oversight conducted by an accounting firm - which provides financial data to investors.

This money is then used to pay for limited work to Civ3.

Frankly, I think, after a company provides a few patches, this should be the way of game development - driven by it's players...

You have my sincere support!!!! Who sends what first? :goodjob:

Personally, I think the money would be better spent sending it to Steph for his game. Since I think Firaxis will probably reject this idea. I mean, the fact is that the Creation forum is the most "pro-Civ" forum out there. A lot of others have given up on it, or at the very least, will certainly not give one more flat dime to Firaxis after the way they've handled the whole situation.

Well, the crowds have certainly thinned! That's for sure!

FWIW, $10000 won't pay for a lot. Realistically, to pay for 3 months of one of their top people (you wouldn't want to give it to the scrub team) you would need to get at least $30000 or so (to cover the overhead). This of course does not factor in the opportunity cost of pulling a senior programmer away from "the next big thing", just the raw expenses. The real price would probably be higher.

Of course, from what I hear, a case of beer sent to the right person will do wonders to grease the skids.

What would I want if I pitched in my money (which I would if I thought it work)?

Fix the bugs. That's it. Leave new features for CIV.

Straczynski, I'm afraid for CIV you will be disappointed as they are going 3D for everything. To me, this implies that the units will have different formats. With any luck they will use a standard 3D animation format this time around and actually make unit creation easier (for those with the tools).

Editor:
Working "Add", "Copy/Paste" & "Drag and Drop" Functions for units, eras, & civilizations
Game Event Language Files (see dom pedro's post above)
Better diplomacy options- i.e. have more than misc 8 civs on screen, etc
UN votings Event System á la SMAC
Fix Transport and Helicopter Units' use

Wow, W.i.n.t.e.r.! You are asking a lot for such a short amount of time and money.

1. Ability to add eras.
2. Ability to add terrains.
3. Flag for naval aircraft (it is a bit curious to see a B-52 on a carrier !) and helicopter.
4. Ability to move unit in the list of the editor.

And I agree with Don Pedrom II when he talk about Steph project (SSS)

 I know its just that these things are still missing after over 2 and a half years... Firaxis could have made an online rollout of updates (pay by $card)

K- the really important things are:
Working "Add", "Copy/Paste" & "Drag and Drop" Functions for units, eras, & civilizations
Game Event Language Files

...and if there is time & space left:
UN votings Event System á la SMAC

I'd estimate the cost of your original list of changes at over $100000 to implement (and I've been accused of underbidding my software estimates by my management) assuming Firaxis did it in house.
